A YOUNG GIRL CHASING A BUTTERFLY measurements note figure: 85cm., 33½in. column: 93cm., 36½in. signed & dated: Lombardi f. / Roma 1878 white marble, on a veined marble revolving column NOTE Giovanni Battista Lombardi is representative of the Italian school of romantic realism which developed after around 1850. This movement was an important factor in the decline of Neo-classicism which had remained more or less unchanged since the 1820's. Lombardi began his career in his father's marble workshop, before studying at the scuola di Disegno di Rezzato and then in Milan under Lorenzo Vela, Vincenzo's brother. He continued his studies in Rome, where he took life-drawing classes under Pietro Tenerani and set up a studio with his brother Giovita. Traces of Neo-classicism remained in Lombardi's work, particularly in the funerary monuments for which he was well-known. However, the exoticism of his marble figures of biblical subjects, such as Susanna, and the gentle sentimentality which pervades his figures of children both reflect a more modern interest in detail, mood and realism. LITERATURE Vicario vol. 2, pp. 614-619; Panzetta vol. 1, p. 167 and vol. 2, fig. 472 NOTE After studying in his hometown of Rezzato and Milan, Lombardi moved to Rome around the middle of the 19th century. Here he studied at the Accademia under Pietro Tenerani, one of Thorvaldsen's leading followers, and later worked in his studio. Lombardi soon established a productive studio of his own, which he shared with his younger brother, Giovita. The latter concentrated on animal, still-life, and architectural sculpture. Giovanni Battista was the more inventive of the pair, producing fine busts, funerary and commemorative sculpture, as well as large subject pieces, both religious and profane. For many of his quasi-religious themes he favored individual female subjects such as Deborah, Rebecca, and as in the present marble group, Suzanna and Ruth.
