It is written that Longabaugh was so popular back in his day that his paintings sold "wet" from the easel. Not only did Longabaugh paint in oils, but he did many watercolors and etchings as well. It was noted in a newspaper tribute that he was as fine a man as he was an artist, and that he would be greatly missed. (2 pcs.) Provenance: Descended in the family of the artistNote: Born near Chicago in Grayslake, Illinois, Charles Longabaugh studied art at Wheaton College and the Art Institute of Chicago. Working primarily from his studio in Grayslake, Longabaugh also loved to travel. He painted locales such as New York and Philadelphia, as well as urban and rural scenes of the South. Longabaugh traveled as far south as Mexico, working his way through Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, and his cityscapes, bayou landscapes, and rustic cabin scenes from the New Orleans and Natchez areas are some of his loveliest works. The current lot exhibits Longabaugh's talent as a colorist; the teal, green, and brick red colors in each painting contrast for a complementary visual effect. The two locations depicted in this lot, Barracks at Burgundy and Esplanade near Rampart, are only a block apart in the eastern section of the French Quarter; they portray a delightful view of New Orleans life in the late 1930s.
