Austrian artist Josef Lorenzl is one of the most recognized sculptors and ceramicists of the Art Deco period. Art collectors praise Josef Lorenzl sculptures of lithe dancers for their detailed form and illusion of movement. He learned how to cast bronze at the Vienna Arsenal, a military storage complex. While many of his sculptures feature mixed materials and ceramics, his most well-known pieces are of ivory or bronze.

A vertical rectangular support at the rear features an aperture at the base and top for electrical wiring. The reverse of the vertical support bears the incised signature Lorenzl. The figure is posed standing before a white Borzoi dog with black spots. Josef Lorenzl (1892-1950) was one of Goldscheider's most important sculptors, particularly renowned for his Art Deco style. The underside is incised with the Goldscheider Wien mark in ink, accompanied by Lorenzl's signature. Model number 7722 / 22 / 14.
