Père noël illustrates the way in which Louardiri appropriates and transforms exogenous figures, integrating them into an open narrative universe where tale, symbol and formal invention merge. Santa Claus, with his unconventional attributes, is isolated in the composition, surrounded by birds.

Painted in the early 1960's. Provenance Acquired in the early 1960s, directly from the artist by Christian Raffaëli (receipt signed by the artist and authenticated by M. de Roquette-Buisson); then by descent. "The girl in question is a chleuh - she was singing in the forest and the young man had heard her - he really liked the sound and gave her a gift of a carpet and a vase". Produced in the early 1960s, this oil belongs to the seminal period when Louardiri was developing an autonomous pictorial language, nourished by Moroccan storytelling and oral traditions. Still little-known a few years earlier, the artist had his first institutional visibility - in Rabat in 1961, then through several exhibitions in 1963 in different Moroccan cities - and critics insisted on the singularity of his plastic language, born of a direct relationship with popular tradition and the imaginary world of storytelling. The composition revolves around a large central vase - the visual and symbolic pivot of the scene the artist himself describes: a young Chleuh woman was singing in the forest; the young man, seduced by her voice, offered her a carpet and a vase in exchange. The two figures face each other in a space saturated with stylized floral motifs. Here, the artist displays his instinctive sense of composition and balance, his abundant imagination nourished by references to nature - a legacy of his years as a gardener.

Provenance Collection Nourdine Cherkaoui, Paris; given by the artist to his maternal grandmother, Aimée Battistini (1911-1989), then by descent. The transmission of this work from Louardiri to Aimée Battistini is not simply a family gesture: it unites several figures of international artistic modernity linked by the same Parisian milieu. Aimée Battistini (1916-1989), a Venezuelan-born painter of Corsican origin, began training in Paris at the Académie Julian in 1928. In the capital, her studio became home to the Los Disidentes group - a collective of abstract Venezuelan painters including Alejandro Otero and Jesús Rafael Soto - and in 1953 she took part in an exhibition at the Denise René gallery. As Ludmila's mother and Ahmed Cherkaoui's wife, she was at the heart of the artistic circle that united the two Moroccan painters. Gaston Diehl - critic and cultural director of the Mission Universitaire et Culturelle Française au Maroc - dedicated booklets to both Louardiri and Cherkaoui in his Art Moderne Maroc collection (Imframar, ca. 1963), several copies of which are included in this sale, and also documented the work of Battistini (El arte en Venezuela en los años 50, 2001).

Dated 1965, this oil on panel belongs to Louardiri's mature period, when his singularity is fully asserted. The name "Garden of Eden" condenses the artist's characteristic imagination: stylized vegetation, figures embracing in a space without academic perspective, motifs borrowed from Moroccan decorative arts - carpets, ceramics, painted ceilings. Louardiri doesn't describe a garden: he constructs its mythological memory, populated by plant and animal presences in a harmony that is both naïve and learned.

Ahmed LOUARDIRI (1928 - 1974) Le palais Gouache sur panneau Signé en bas à gauche 75 x 63,5 cm Provenance: Collection personnelle de Monique de Gouvenain (1916-2007), qui travailla au centre d’accueil des étudiants maghrébins de Paris dans les années 1960. C'est dans ce cadre qu'elle rencontra plusieurs jeunes artistes étudiants, dont Ahmed Cherkaoui. Vers la fin de l’année 1965, après avoir collaboré avec les Ballets Modernes de Paris et le Festival de danse des Baux de Provence, Monique de Gouvenain réalise enfin son rêve d’ouvrir une galerie d’art contemporain, la Galerie Solstice. Située rue des Tournelles, près de la place des Vosges, dans le quartier du Marais en pleine transformation à l’époque, la galerie présente une exposition de groupe pour son inauguration, à laquelle participe naturellement Ahmed Cherkaoui. Par la suite, Monique de Gouvenain expose régulièrement les œuvres de ce dernier, ainsi que celles de Chaïbia, Tallal, Belkahia, et de nombreux autres peintres et sculpteurs français et étrangers tels que Ghesquière, Lonsdale, Scherdin et Yayanagi.

Sa source d'inspiration principale est la flore qu'il connaît et affectionne tout particulièrement. Sa première exposition au Maroc se tient 1961. Ses œuvres soulignent combien son travail de jardinier a influencé son art : le support est tapissé de motifs végétaux, créant un univers luxuriant et foisonnant, tel un eden perdu. A cette thématique, il associe des éléments de la culture maghrébine, comme cette femme vêtu d'un caftan aux couleurs vives et parée de bijoux traditionnels.
