  • Charles Loupot, St. Raphaël / Quinquina. 1952.
    Jul. 30, 2026

Charles Loupot, St. Raphaël / Quinquina. 1952.

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Charles Loupot 1892-1962 St. Raphaël / Quinquina. 1952. Condition A-: minor loss in bottom left corner; skinning in upper image. As Zagrodzki notes in his book, Loupot's work for St. Raphael "can be qualified as the work of his life." From 1937-1960, Loupot worked hand-in-hand with Max Augier, the advertising director of St. Raphael, creating a series of posters that tell of a unique saga in the story of advertising. Beginning with the poster that features the stylization of red and white clad waiters, Loupot gradually moved towards creating more and more abstracted images. Starting in 1945, Loupot began experimenting with his geometric stylizations of two waiters and his continuous transformation of typography. Of historic note, between 1945 and 1952, poster publicity for aperitifs was forbidden in France, so although this poster is dated 1947 (the year it was designed), it would not have been printed before 1952. This is the smaller format. Zagrodzki p. 93, Loupot 89, Encyclopedie de l'Affiche p. 172.

  • Charles Loupot, Cointreau. 1930.
    Jul. 30, 2026

    Charles Loupot, Cointreau. 1930.

    Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Charles Loupot 1892-1962 Cointreau. 1930. Condition A-: minor repaired tears and abrasions in margins; minor creases and abrasions in image. The success of Cointreau as a product can as much be attributed to their advertising as to the delectable nature of the product itself. Their first foray into popular advertising was in 1898, when Francisco Tamagno designed a poster for the company featuring "a white Pierrot wearing glasses licking a big bottle of Cointreau. Why the glasses? They had been added at the time of printing the poster by the printer Camis to make a joke about Mr. Edouard Cointreau whose myopia was legendary. This detail was so successful that it was preserved" (Reclame p. 46). The Pierrot appeared in other posters, most notably those of Jean Mercier, who visually updated the character for the 1920s and 30s. Loupot also "reworked and refined [the character] . . . He uses the color of the liquor, which he cleverly works with a set of gradients . . . to obtain this range of warm shades, and a texture evoking the skin of the fruit. It should be noted the clever use of the reserve to enhance the white face of Pierrot" (ibid). The partner image to this poster features a Pierrot standing, holding a smaller bottle of the liqueur. Loupot 86B, Loupot / Forney 39, Loupot Peintres p. 72.

    Est: $4,000 - $5,000

Charles Loupot Stop-Fire vintage poster 1930 46.875 h x 30.5 w in (119 x 77 cm) One of Loupot's classics in high Art Deco mode, Stop-Fire makes a big deal out of a little extinguisher meant to smother car fires. Loupot uses a huge illustration of a candle-snuffer to swallow up the flames enveloping a car, which is now reduced in size to a toy. "We see a transitional vision, one in between illustration, symbolism, and the praise of the object" (Loupot/Zagrodzki, p. 67). This is the second variant. • Charles Loupot, Grieder Zurich : Maquette
    Jul. 21, 2026

Charles Loupot, Grieder Zurich : Maquette

    Est: $12,000 - $15,000

Charles Loupot Grieder Zurich : Maquette 1918 pastel on paper 50.375 h x 35.25 w in (128 x 90 cm) A frequent contributor for the Switz department store, Greider, Loupot illustrated many fashionable ladies over the years, and this early-period maquette offers a rare window into his mind as a commercial artist. The figure, who holds herself warmly against the wind, is bedecked in a vibrant and eye-catching purple and orange checker design. Hints of this purple and orange highlight the woman's face, creating a harmony of colors that is at once both striking and calming. Though never issued for print, we can see why Greider was a frequent client of Loupot's, few would be able to match the talent it takes to make bold designs look elegant and wearable. Signed and dated to upper right 'Ch. Loupot 18'. This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.

  • Charles Loupot, Exposition / Arts Decoratifs vintage poster
    Jul. 21, 2026

Charles Loupot, Exposition / Arts Decoratifs vintage poster

    Est: $2,500 - $3,000

Charles Loupot Exposition / Arts Decoratifs vintage poster 1925 23.625 h x 15.625 w in (60 x 40 cm) This is the exhibition that crowned the Art Deco trends of the period, gave it its name, and helped it to dominate applied arts for the next decade. Loupot was one of four artists selected to create posters for the event; the rose billowing upwards from the factory below symbolizes the cooperation of art and industry. As the Art Deco era had only just officially begun, Loupot's style is still more expressionistic and painterly-but the typography is pure Art Deco. This is the smaller format. • Charles Loupot, St. Raphael / Quinquina (Rare vintage poster)
    Jul. 21, 2026

Charles Loupot, St. Raphael / Quinquina (Rare vintage poster)

    Est: $40,000 - $50,000

Charles Loupot St. Raphael / Quinquina (Rare vintage poster) 1938 121.125 h x 167.875 w in (308 x 426 cm) In this monumental eight-sheet creation-his second for the aperitif producers, and one of only three known copies in this largest format-we see the attendant pair relaxing after the completion of their shift, enjoying a nip of the beverage that they faithfully tout. Not surprisingly, opposites attract: red likes white, white likes red, and in Loupot's talented hands, both drinks look enticing, refreshing, and delicious. "Loupot once more leaves the two garcons their two-dimensionality in order to put them in a situation, transformed into consumers of their aperitifs. The publication of this version also provided an opportunity to experiment with its posting: the photographs of the time show this poster on slight inclines on the palisades and surrounded with bands of text laid out in a very erudite way" (Loupot/Zagrodzki, p. 90). May. 21, 2026

    Charles Loupot, Voisin. 1923.

    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Charles Loupot 1892-1962 Voisin. 1923. Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some into image; small replaced losses, restoration and in margins; minor creases and scuffing in margins and image. In 1923, Gabriel Voisin, the luxury car manufacturer, commissioned Loupot (who had just returned to Paris after years in Switzerland) to design a pair of posters promoting his automobiles. The results are two dramatically different images; this poster is minimalistic, with a small red car against what is essentially an all-white background. The second image is the exact opposite - a colorless car starkly highlighted against a vividly-drawn, verdant forest depicted in a Cezanne-esque style ( See Swann sale 2449 Lot 97). The effect these two images had was such that R.L. Dupuy, the head of a prominent Parisian advertising agency at the time, remarked that the posters "dropped like two stones in the frog-pond of the advertising imagination" (Weill p. 207). 2nd Salon Automobile 52, Modern Poster 172, Crouse p. 54, Reina Sofia p. 143.

Another of the four official designs chosen by a jury to promote the Exposition Internationale Des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. As in many of his posters, Loupot uses vibrating tones to frame his image. This is the smaller format. Loupot / Musee de l'Affiche no. 23, Loupot no. 58, p. 65, Euro Deco p. 29, Reclame 111.

We may never know what a parrot and a fern have to do with this particular natural aroma, but it certainly stands out against the typical perfume promotion-and attests to the artist's early creative vision. This is probably one of the first ever posters he created, and rare. Dol. Zoellner, Geneve This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.

Charles Loupot The Austin Tractor vintage poster c. 1928 30 h x 24.25 w in (76 x 62 cm) "Farming equipment ... is not an inherently sexy item in the advertising world. But in Loupot's capable hands this tractor promotion turns from laborious to expressive. One gets the sense from the design that the diminutive Austin tractor ... is responsible for tilling the vast expanse set before it. It is a clever concept, one that relies on angles and deep, vibrating colors rather than on draftsmanship" (Crouse/Deco, p. 56). Loupot summed up his work in the following way, "The lazy eye must be continuously surprised by a simple and perfect graphic art" (Weill p. 208), and in this stunning, audacious Art Deco image, Loupot displays a masterful ability to convey speed. He depicts the front of a vehicle ascending a hill, vibrating with the energy beneath its hood and powering its mighty engine. The splash of color overlapping the car is the French tricolor cockade, not only blurry in the vehicle's ascent, but also a perfect visual connection to Peugeot's slogan on the poster, "the great national brand." CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) ST. RAPHAËL. 1938. 62½x47 inches, 158¾x119½ cm. Courbet, Paris. Condition A-: expertly-repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and image; restoration along vertical and horizontal folds. Framed. From 1937 to 1960, Loupot worked hand in hand with Max Augier, the advertising director of St. Raphaël, creating a series of posters that tell of a unique saga in the story of advertising. This is the third poster Loupot designed for the company and the first with a prevailing sense of geometric harmony and balance (Loupot p. 91). It was also the beginning of a years-long campaign in which Loupot gradually moved towards creating more and more abstracted, geometric stylizations of the two waiters and his continuous transformation of the typography of the company's logo. Rare. We can locate only 4 other copies at auction since 1998. Crouse p. 193, Loupot 105, Reina Sofia p. 133.

CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) EXPOSITION INTERNATIONALE ARTS DÉCORATIFS ET INDUSTRIELS MODERNES. 1925. 23¾x15¾ inches, 60¼x40 cm. Les Editions de L'Image de France, Paris. Condition A-: slight time-staining and minor abrasions at edges; minor abrasions along vertical and horizontal folds. Another of the four official designs chosen by a jury to promote the Exposition Internationale Des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. Printed with only three colors, the image of smoke from factory chimneys morphing into the petals of a rose (one of the most popular decorative elements of the period) symbolizes the connection between art and industry within the Art Deco movement. As in many of his posters, Loupot uses vibrating tones to frame his image. This is the smaller format. CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) PKZ / BURGER - KEHL & C. 1921. 49¾x35¼ inches, 125¼x89½ cm. Wolfsberg, Zurich. Condition B: upper and side margins entirely replaced; creases, abrasions and restoration in image and along vertical and horizontal folds. Mounted on Chartex. A dapper gentleman, holding his cane in the air, stands monumentally in the foreground. He is backed by a painterly, diagonal swath of what could pass for a billowing fire, but is more likely the vibrant autumn foliage - with a few leaves scattered on the ground behind him. Loupot's use of color - especially his signature orange and complementary blue & green tones, results in an eye-catching, energetic composition. • Charles Loupot, Cointreau

    Charles Loupot, Cointreau

    Est: $4,000 - $5,000

Charles Loupot Cointreau 1930 63 h x 47.25 w in (160 x 120 cm) Loupot created two posters for Cointreau using the image of the commedia dell'arte clown Pierrot; one male (see PAI-XLV, 369) and one female, as seen here. Pierrot had been a staple of advertising for more than 30 years and Loupot was brought in to give a much-needed update to the clown. Loupot abstracts and stylizes the character into Cubist forms defined by a textural orange peel which refers to the sour orange whose peel flavors this curacao liqueur. The clown's nose clip is not just an eye-catching device—Loupot borrowed the accessory from photographs of the famed mime artist Najac as Pierrot.
