Note: Richard Cockle Lucas (1800-1883) is predominately known as a sculptor in wax and ivory, but he also worked in glass, marble and bronze, as well as being a painter. He began his career as a sculptor as an apprentice to his uncle, who worked as a cutler in Winchester, carving knife handles. He joined the Royal Academy Schools in 1828 and studied under Richard Westmacott. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1829 and 1859 and showed ivory carvings and imitation bronzes at the Great Exhibition in 1851. William Willoughby Cole, 3rd Earl of Enniskillen (1807-1886), was a British Paleontologist and Conservative Member of Parliament for Fermanagh between 1831 and, when he succeeded his father to become the third Earl of Enniskillen in 1840, entering the House of Lords as Baron Grinstead. He also served as the first Imperial Grand Master of the Orange Order from 1866 until his death. A wax portrait of Charles Richard Sumner is recorded as an extant work in wax by Richard Cockle Lucas (Sumner, Charles Richard, Bishop of Winchester 1852, C.97). Pyke, E. LUCAS, with an indistinct inscription, raised on a turned and ebonised pedestal and plinth base (Bust 17cm high; overall 40cm) Footnote: Provenance: The Earls of Crawford and Balcarres, Balcarres House, Fife, Scotland Literature : Gunnis, Rupert Forbes A Biographical Dictionary of sculptors in Britain 1660 -1851 , Odhams Press 1953. Note: Born in Winchester, Hampshire, Richard Cockle Lucas discovered his talent as sculptor at the age of twelve, when he was tasked with carving knife handles as an apprentice to his uncle, a cutler. After joining the Royal Academy in 1828, Lucas quickly gained prominence as a sculptor of portraits and medallions, predominantly in wax, marble and ivory. However, he is also noted for his large-scale models of the Elgin Marbles, acquired by the British Museum and much admired today. An eccentric character, Lucas was posthumously placed at the centre of controversy after his son claimed that the Bust of Flora , by Leonardo da Vinci according to the Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Berlin, was in fact by the hand of his father. Lucas detailed how his father conducted such work, by building up layers of wax from old candle ends, before stuffing the hollow centre with fabric rags and debris to stabilise it. Much dubiety still exists, although it is generally thought that Lucas worked on the piece at some stage to restore it, a testament to his skill and reputation as one of the leading British sculptors of the nineteenth century.

A shell cameo brooch depicting Lord Palmerston after Richard Cockle Lucas, the bust-length profile, collet set in a pinchbeck mount with engraved border, length 6.5cm, after a wax portrait by Richard Cockle Lucas (1800-1883) dated 1852 and formerly in the collection at Harewood House. Lucas was a friend of Lord Palmerston (Henry John Temple, 1784-1865), who served as Prime Minister during two terms in the 1850s and '60s, and he was a frequent visitor to his home 'Broadlands'; he made three wax portraits of the statesman, and a statuette which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1859; Palmerston in return secured a Civil List pension for the sculptor. h:6.50 cm

A disbound album of ninety-nine window mounted albumen print cartes de visite, c, 1860s, including thirty-four self portraits, many staged and including titles such as He Resolves on Adventure, He Goes on His Travels, As a Hopeful Lover, A Disappointed One, The Poet of Hope, The Conspirator, The Spirit of Wine, The Repentent-The Spirit of Intellect, As a Saint, A Sinner, A Druid in Private, The Old Artful in Public, As a Student, A Don, A Jesuit, A Puritan, etc., the remaining cartes of sculptures and designs, etc., some images faded, neat ink manuscript captions to mounts, somewhat spotted and soiled throughout and frayed at front and rear, four other small albumen prints mounted on rear endpapers, partially indistinct and damaged inscription at front giving provenance and dated ' Chilworth, Hants, 1863' with another date below May Day 1861, disbound and spine deficient, oblong 8vo, together with an autograph letter signed by Lucas, Chilworth Gallery, 22nd September 1863, to an unidentified man, ' I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your cheque being payment for my book. In early life Man desires Love - in Latter periods - appreciation - this you have given me and to my great Satisfaction. When a stray bit comes across me I will send it you as a memento that you are yrs are remembered by yrs obligingly. The last photograph in your book the Setting Sun [found on rear endpaper with signed presentation inscription from Lucas beneath] - has meaning which you are to dwell on', a little soiled, 2 pp., 8vo. The inscriptions in the album are all apparently in Lucas's holograph. Rare and one of only two presentation albums known to exist, the other belonging to the National Portrait Gallery, London. (2)
