We are grateful to Prof. Roberto De Feo for kindly confirming the authenticity on the basis of the original. The present lot by Pietro Luchini is based on the third act of Giuseppe Verdi's opera (1813-1901) and depicts the heroic figure of Joan in the foreground. A white flag with the Red Cross, held in her left hand, forms the backdrop. She grips the hilt of her sword in her right hand, pointing the French militia behind her in the direction of the battle against the English. Julia von Pahlen Samayloff is portrayed as Joan of Arc, recognisable by her characteristic hairstyle with a centre parting that cascades into wide ringlets, which is depicted in several known portraits of the Russian noblewoman. Julija Pavlovna was officially born in Russia on 6 April 1803 to Peter Ludwig von Pahlen, military governor of Moscow and leader of the conspirators who strangled Tsar Paul I on the night of 11 March 1801, and a mother whose ancestors included Tsarina Catherine I. She was in fact the daughter of Tsar Alexander I (1777-1825), and became the mistress of his much younger brother Nicholas (1796-1855) as a teenager, himself Tsar from 1825. His passion now faded, her uncle/lover Nicholas rid himself of Giulia by sending her into golden exile in faraway Milan. From her arrival in the city, Countess Giulia von Pahlen became the star of Milanese social life, the organiser of grand luncheons, fabulous parties, and memorable society receptions held in her palace at what is now Via Borgonuovo 20, frescoed and decorated by the most important artists of the time. Educated and passionate about opera, her overwhelming love affair with Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) in Milan comes immediately to mind, a love that was quickly replaced with his rival Luigi Pacini (1796-1867). Bellini's death in Paris in 1835 from slow mercury poisoning can be traced back to her former lover, as can that of her second husband, the tenor Pierre-Antine Pery, whom she married in Trieste on 25 January 1846 and who died of ‘intoxication’ after only twenty-five days. Another lover of hers was the painter Karl Pavlovič Brjullov (1799-1852), author of the famous majestic painting The Last Days of Pompeii, completed in Rome between 1830 and 1833 (St. Petersburg, Russian Museum), for which the Countess posed as a model for the central female figure who covers herself trying to protect two children from the eruption. The events surrounding the painting over the course of almost two centuries are unknown, but it is more than likely that it was a commission from Samayloff herself, whose collection was dispersed when she left for France.

Catalogued and illustrated in: Frédéric Hitzel, Couleurs de la Corne d’Or: Peintres voyageurs à la sublime porte, ACR ed., Paris 2002. Pietro Luchini trained at the Accademia di Carrara in Bergamo under Giuseppe Diotti (1779-1846) and moved to Rome in 1820. He travelled to Paris and London in 1832 and eventually journeyed to Constantinople in the 1850s, where he lived for a decade. Little is known about the artist except that he painted portraits, such as this lot. The sitter’s costume reflects the fashions of the period. As she is not wearing a veil, it is most probable that she is not a Muslim. However, she doubtless comes from a wealthy family, as shown by her diamond earrings and velvet top embroidered with gold thread. She is holding a diamond-studded çubuk, a long ottoman pipe with a yellow hardstone mouthpiece that ends in a Tophane cup, a porcelain bowl which is not visible in this painting.
