Date: 1690 Description: Large-format copperplate engraving from the 17th century with Dutch legend, depicting a historical scene of great symbolic significance: It is not the crucifixion practice of the Romans that is shown, but rather its demonstrative abolition by Emperor Constantine the Great - as explained in the caption, out of reverence for the cross of Christ. The composition is multi-layered: while people are still depicted on crosses in the centre and background, the actual focus is in the foreground - where crosses are being dismantled and taken apart. The scene thus follows a Christian interpretation in which Constantine is celebrated as the conqueror of pagan cruelty and the pioneer of Christianity.
