Danny Lyon SNCC / Is He Protecting You? vintage poster c. 1963 14 h x 22 w in (36 x 56 cm) Captured by notable American photographer Danny Lyon in the early 1960s for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), this poster distills a charged moment of the civil rights movement into a stark visual challenge. Using one of Lyon's documentary photographs of a Mississippi highway patrolman, the work pairs the image with a confrontational question that forces viewers to reconsider the role of law enforcement in maintaining segregation and suppressing Black activism. Produced as part of SNCC's grassroots organizing and fundraising efforts, the poster exemplifies how photography was repurposed as a direct, persuasive tool for social and political critique during this period. Each signed in pencil on the verso. Two prints each loosely in a transparent sleeve and together with a cover sheet bound to an album and in a half-linen slipcase. RFG Publishing, New York 1983. Copy 10 from an edition of 50 (+ 12 A.P.). With official permission, Danny Lyon was able to document the harsh, degrading, and monotonous daily life of imprisonment in various Texas prisons over a period of fourteen months in 1967–1968. In doing so, Lyon avoided depictions of decay, violence, or neglect. He published the series in 1971 under the title “Conversations with the Dead.” It demonstrates the photographer’s interest in giving a face to those overlooked and cast out by society.

Both the book and the print are also SIGNED by Danny Lyon and each is also numbered out of 50. Limited Edition of only 50 Copies (with the book's cover image - while another 50 copies were simultaneously issued with the portrait titled "Dusty & Sparky"). The book is 8 x 11 inches, 104 pages with 48 sheet-fed b&w gravure plates printed on Japanese paper. It is part of his influential photobook The Bikeriders, published in 1968. Magnum Prints statement on back side. Not examined out of frame. Danny Lyon (American b. 1942) is a self-taught American photographer who works in the style of photographic New Journalism. He traveled with the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle club in 1965-1966 and published his pictures of the club members as The Bikeriders (1968). Dimensions are 14.5 in h x 14.5 in w. Paul Gunther (1956â2022) was a tireless champion of New York City's public realm, recognizing that its vitality was rooted in the diverse perspectives of artists, architects, and everyday citizens alike. Throughout his career, he held leadership roles at New Yorkâbased nonprofit arts organizations including the Gracie Mansion Conservancy, the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, the New-York Historical Society, and the Municipal Art Society. These platforms allowed him to pursue wide-ranging interestsâfrom safeguarding neglected neoclassical monuments to ensuring that the redevelopment of Times Square preserved its incandescent signage. His lifelong commitment to innovation and preservation is his enduring legacy, visible in the vitality of New York's shared urban spaces. That same ecumenical and open-minded approach to the arts shaped his personal collecting. Paul brought to his home the same discerning yet inclusive eye he brought to his professional work. His 10th Street apartment was filled with an eclectic array of art and designâobjects spanning countries, styles, and eras. Many were acquired during travels across Europe, Asia, and South America; others were treasured gifts from friends and colleagues such as Henry Geldzahler, former Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for New York City and curator. Together, these works reflect the aesthetic breadth and curiosity that defined him. The sale of works from the Collection of Paul Gunther offers the opportunity not only to acquire part of his legacy but also to sustain the vision that animated his life. I never intended to be anything. In 1962 I was a history student at the University of Chicago. While hitchhiking in the West I took a picture of a truck in the desert and entered it in the Festival of the Arts Exhibit at the university. Hugh Edwards, curator of prints and drawings at the Art Institute of Chicago and one of the judges, gave my picture a prize. He said he liked big trucks. Aaron Siskind was also a judge, and I was told that he said he preferred pregnant women as a subject. Thus early in life the world was divided for me. Photography then seemed new and exciting, and all America, which I regarded with mystery and reverence, lay before me. / Eighteen years have now passed. In order to make this book I have had to face directly everything I have done in photography from that day to this. Now, I give it back to you, America., from whom I took it all in the first place. Both the book and the print are also SIGNED by Danny Lyon and each is also numbered out of 50. Limited Edition of only 50 Copies (with the book's cover image - while another 50 copies were simultaneously issued with the portrait titled "Dusty & Sparky"). The book is 8 x 11 inches, 104 pages with 48 sheet-fed b&w gravure plates printed on Japanese paper.
