Sworders*Neville Stephen Lytton (1879-1951) Lots 275-277 The following three lots are a collection of studies of King Charles spaniels, by Neville Stephen Bulwer-Lytton, 3rd Earl of Lytton, and his first wife, The Hon. Mrs Neville Lytton, later Baroness Wentworth. Lytton was an artist and noted athlete - winning a bronze at the 1908 Olympics. Lady Wentworth as she is best known, inherited the Crabbet Arabian Stud in Sussex from her mother Lady Ann Blunt and went on to have a huge influence on horse breeding in the first half of the 20th century. Over 90% of Arabian horses today can trace their pedigree through Crabbet lines. In addition, Lady Wentworth was a noted breeder of King Charles spaniels. In 1911 she published a book on toy dogs and their origins, 'Toy Dogs and their Ancestors'. *Neville Stephen Lytton (1879-1951) 'Champion Windfall', a Blenheim chestnut and white toy spaniel pastel 23.5 x 22cm, with three further studies of red and white toy spaniels, including 'Norry', inscribed and signed with a monogram, dated 1919, and 'Orange Frills', together with a print of Lady Lytton and Champion Windfall after the oil painting by Neville Stephen Lytton, various sizes, and a copy of 'Toy Dogs and their Ancestors', published by Duckworth & Co., 1911, by Lady Lytton (6) Provenance: Neville Stephen Bulwer-Lytton, 3rd Earl of Lytton & Lady Judith Lytton; by descent to the current owner. (See illustration) Note: this sale includes a number of works by "The Honourable Neville Stephen Lytton," 3rd Earl Lytton (1879 - 1951). They have all come from "the family of one of the artist's sponsors, Mrs Mary" Randolph Reeve (formerly Cliff) and [ ] Nicholson "of the Grove Fulbeck, near Grantham. She lost her first husband" at Ypres in 1916 and became a sponsor of Lytton. Her home was said by the family to contain no other art than those by Neville Lytton. In the 1930s she remarried and moved to Ledenham Hall. She covered the walls with Lytton's work.
