RICHARD MACDONALD "ANGELIC CRYSTAL" BRONZE SCULPTURE

            Est: -

Richard MacDonald (Born 1946) "Angelic Crystal" Bronze Sculpture. Crystal is a young ballerina who has posed for Richard many times. She has a quiet radiance, a pure and thoughtful quality that gives her grace an added dimension. She is lithe and delicate, and as Richard studied her, he was struck by an “other-worldliness’ in her demeanor and swan-like posture. The arms he had drawn back became simple flutters of drapery falling from the shoulders and blown back in ruffles that suggest an angel’s wings. Subtlety and classical restraint are the hallmarks of Richard MacDonald’s style, so the angelic reference is not exaggerated, but rather left to the viewer’s imagination. Richard MacDonald (Born 1946) "Tango Study II" Bronze Sculpture. The Tango Series expresses an intriguing variation of mood and movement, and in Tango Study II, MacDonald emphasizes Zita’s assertive flourish, or firulete, with a high-heeled foot. You can hear the familiar tempo and melodic phrasing of tango music as you view it. Richard MacDonald (Born 1946) "Gymnast" Bronze Sculpture. Signed and dated on ring. Created by artist Richard MacDonald for the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics, Flair Across America celebrates the triumph of the human spirit and the idealization of the human form. While its message is universal, Flair Across America also embodies the Olympic credo stated by the father of the modern-day Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, "The essence lies not in the victory, but in the struggle.? Epitomizing the energy that MacDonald devotes to his monuments, the artist brought together gold-medal Olympic athletes to tour with the monument, including Kurt Thomas who popularized the gymnastic movement called The Flair. Est: -

Richard MacDonald (Born 1946) "Female Cheetah" Bronze Sculpture. In the Female Cheetah, MacDonald creates a unique composition with tremendous movement. The coiled formation of the female cheetah is skillfully executed and charged with energy and we can anticipate the powerful release to follow. The visceral qualities of the surface further enhance this idea. In a precisely balanced figure, the 'face forward' nature of the moment chosen by the artist gives this piece a bold, daring, and powerful character. Richard MacDonald (Born 1946) "Sisters" Bronze Sculpture. In Sisters, it is happiness in its purest, most youthful form -- without thought or care -- sparked by nothing more than the beauty of the dance, the thrill of movement, and the joy of being alive. The expression of joie de vivre is perhaps Richard MacDonald’s most distinctive gift: in the context of the revival of figurative sculpture, it is his innate feeling for the positive and uplifting side of human experience that makes him stand apart in contemporary art, which for most of the twentieth century found the expression of happiness problematic. Artist: Richard MacDonald Title: "Sisters" Medium: Bronze Sculpture Circa/Year: 1994 Signature Type: Signed Signature Location: on base Edition: 67/125 Approx. Net Weight: 102 lbs. Richard MacDonald (Born 1946) "Elena" Bronze Sculpture. Elena, poised mid-air, elevated by an elegant cascade of drapery, becomes the embodiment of freedom, grace, and hope. Soaring and ethereal, the Cirque du Soleil performer sculpted in enduring bronze is transformed into a thousand memories and associations, destined to enter into our collective cultural consciousness as a lasting symbol of beauty. Apr. 14, 2024

RICHARD MACDONALD "STUDY FOR THE ROSE" BRONZE SCULPTURE

            Est: -

Richard MacDonald (Born 1946) "Study For The Rose, Half Life" Bronze Sculpture. This work draws on Richard MacDonald’s highly developed sensitivity for the experience of the dancer, and displays all the quiet beauty of a private moment of reflection. In half-life size the supple and delicate form of the ballerina has real substance—an almost-breathing presence that immediately draws us to wonder at the thoughts of the ballerina toying with the ribbon on her shoe. Her youth and preoccupation give a sense of life and warmth to the sculpture; the beautiful line of her arm draped over the bar is a study in the effortless grace of the well-trained dancer. Her soft cheek rests on her shoulder, and we feel the tenderness of her childish daydream—yet she holds the posture of an accomplished professional. Artist: Richard MacDonald Title: "Study For The Rose" Medium: Bronze Sculpture Circa/Year: 2005 Signature Type: Signed Signature Location: on base Edition: 16/75 Approx. Net Weight: 106 lbs. Est: -

Richard MacDonald (Born 1946) "Nightfall, Third Life" Bronze Sculpture. Signed on base and numbered 3/6. Cloaked in mystery, the female form of Nightfall intrigues us. Concealed is a beautiful face, but like nightfall itself, all is not revealed. The globes in each hand suggest the arrival of night and the passage of day, but also reference the idea to put the past behind us, and open ourselves to the future. Poised on the scythe shaped moon, the figure of Nightfall strides with strength and purpose. MacDonald, 12/30, on a stepped marble base marked 'Charlene and Bob' (the consignors of this lot). Regina Luminaire is the balance, the counterpoint to Orpheo, from MacDonald's masterwork Cinema Architectonica. She is the light to his dark; the sun to his moon. Richard MacDonald (Born 1946) "I Am" Bronze Sculpture. Reflecting his fascination with the human condition, MacDonald has often turned to the subject of the human form as an expression of the physical and spiritual nature of existence. Athletes, in particular, have provided the focus for MacDonald’s art, as the mental discipline and physical endurance necessary to attaining athletic excellence together exemplify the most ideal aspects of human endeavor. "I Am" embodies the taut, perfectly defined musculature of the nude model and reveals a degree of strength and coordination that can only be achieved through perseverance and sense of purpose. Such discipline represents, for MacDonald, the excellence of the human spirit. Est: -

Richard MacDonald (Born 1946) "Study For The Rose" Bronze Sculpture. “Study for the Rose” draws on Richard MacDonald’s highly developed sensitivity for the experience of the dancer, and displays all the quiet beauty of a private moment of reflection. In half-life size the supple and delicate form of the ballerina has real substance an almost-breathing presence that immediately draws us to wonder at the thoughts of the ballerina toying with the ribbon on her shoe. Her youth and preoccupation give a sense of life and warmth to the sculpture; the beautiful line of her arm draped over the bar is a study in the effortless grace of the well-trained dancer. Her soft cheek rests on her shoulder, and we feel the tenderness of her childish daydream yet she holds the posture of an accomplished professional. A study in contrasts, this piece has the timeless appeal associated with the ballet works by Degas, with the unmistakable character that can only be attributed to Richard MacDonald himself. Richard MacDonald (Born 1946) "Sisters, Half Life" Bronze Sculpture. Signed on base and numbered 7/50. In Sisters, Half life it is happiness in its purest, most youthful form without thought or care sparked by nothing more than the beauty of the dance, the thrill of movement, and the joy of being alive. Richard Macdonald American, (B. 1946) Eurydice, 1988 frosted to clear lucite scultpure Signed, dated and numbered 4/250 under the base. Biography from the Archives of askART: Richard MacDonald creates bronze sculptures, which show the power, grace and beauty of athletes, ballerinas, mimes and nymphs. Born in California, MacDonald was enrolled as a painter at Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, where he developed his penchant for the human form. The use of athletic musculature underneath skin and clothes earned a name as an accomplished illustrator; his placements are in the NFL and NBA Halls of Fame and the National Art Museum of Sport. From the two-dimensional surface of the drawing board to the three-dimensional, kinetic feel of clay, the artist evolved. Exploring the same musculature, now in three dimensions, that he used in his two dimensional works. He found them taking on an almost weightless feel. Once translated into bronze these works took on a dimension even he didn't expect, permanence. MacDonald recently gained recognition for sculpting Flair Across America, a monumental 26-foot tall bronze installed in Centennial Park, Atlanta for the 1996 Olympic Games. The Flair celebrates the tenacity involved in the pursuit of excellence while promoting an appreciation for the arts within diverse communities. The trek that the artist embarked on brought this monument from his studio in California across the United States, stopping in cities to educate people on the importance of figurative art in today's society. The model for Flair was Kurt Thomas, the athlete who popularized the "flair" move in Olympic competition. Of this work it was written: "It single-handedly brought figurative monumental sculpture back into the American art scene that one saw it as too sentimental. Too moving to be art."
