He was born in Chicago and received his formal art education at the Royal Academy in Munich from 1877 to 1881, studying under the American Frank Duveneck. Afterwards, MacEwen studied under the French academic painters Fernand Cormon and Tony Robert-Fleury at the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1883, MacEwen traveled to Holland, where he co-founded an art colony in the small town of Egmond aan Zee with his American contemporaries George Hitchcock and Gari Melchers, After three years in Egmond, MacEwen settled in Paris but returned frequently to Holland to paint in Haarlem, Volendam, and Hattem. MacEwen's style reflects the meticulous training he received in the academies in Munich and Paris including an affinity for figure paintings in historical interiors with dramatic chiaroscuro and rendering figures and objects with carefully delineated accuracy. The artist exhibited continuously at major venues throughout the world, including in: Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Paris, Munich, Berlin, Vienna and Antwerp.

Etching, signed lower right. 6" x 4" Born in Chicago, MacEwen traveled to Europe to study art, first in Munich with Frank Duveneck, then in Paris with Corman and Robert-Fleury. He stayed in Europe for many years with studios in both Paris and Holland, where he was also a founding member of the Egmond Artist Colony. Primarily a painter, MacEwen was known for his impressionistic portraits and genre scenes which were quite well received in both Europe and America. His etchings, which are quite scarce, are developed in a very painterly style, reflecting the delicate use of light and shadow of his paintings.

Incredible Provenance! Walter Maxwell MacEwen (McEwen) (1860 - 1943) "Jeune Femme Nue" Oil on Canvas. Depicting a young nude female kneeling on a linen covered bedside, covering her face. Artist hand signed on lower left. Includes tag on the back with the name of the artist, and title of the painting. Also includes tags on reverse from previous Christie's auction in 1985, in New York. Includes label on reverse from Charles Dosbourg Atelier. One of the most acclaimed expatriate painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he was pivotal in the establishment of the art colony at Egmond, Holland, keeping studios both there and in Paris. In 1889 and 1900, he won silver medals at the Paris Expos and other prizes including the San Francisco Exposition of 1915. In Europe, MacEwen was a member of the Society of American Painters; Order of St. Michael, Bavaria; and the Order of Leopold II, Belgium (1909). In 1896, he was awarded Chevalier of Honor and became an Officer in 1908. In the United States, MacEwen was an Associate Member of the National Academy (1903), a member of the Century Club, the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He participated in the decoration of the Library of Congress where his paintings can be seen outside the congressional reading rooms. Walter MacEwen achieved artistic success on both sides of the Atlantic painting Dutch subjects that became his particular specialty. His gift for mood and portraiture resonate in works such as The Old Guard of the House of Orange, a fine, mature example of his work as a Dutch history painter. As scholar Holly Koons McCullough has noted, the present work belongs to a series MacEwen produced in the 1890s, which also included a monumental canvas depicting William and Mary that was tragically destroyed by fire. To date, this sensitive portrayal of a man who has grown old in his line of duty, bearing the Orange standard, is the only work from this ambitious narrative series by MacEwen that can be traced.
