Provenance: Private Collection Slemish mountain looks volcanic, and it is in fact a volcano, luckily extinct. It was Saint Patrick's first experience of Ireland. Having been brought there as a slave, he spent six years on its slopes as a shepherd, and in the tough, isolated conditions he turned to prayer for solace, and eventually escaped. MacIntyre has a modern-day shepherd stand in for the Saint in a charming spring landscape.
