As a member of the legendary artists’ group ‘Der Blaue Reiter’ and the intellectual linchpin of the Rhenish Expressionists, he was at the heart of an era that reinvented the way we see and paint. Influenced by the French avant-garde – he travelled to Paris in 1907, 1908 and 1912 – Macke developed his own distinctive visual language. His paintings continue to fascinate today with their colourful lightness, transforming the everyday into the poetic: people strolling, brightly lit shop windows, harmonious landscapes and still lifes. Although his life came to a tragically early end on the battlefields of the First World War, August Macke left behind a significant body of work of timeless radiance, which impressively attests to his central role in the development of modern painting. In 1911, August Macke found himself at a pivotal point in his development. Early the previous year, he had met Franz Marc in Munich, with whom he shared an artistically inspiring and supportive friendship: in November, he and his family had returned from an extended stay at Lake Tegernsee to his hometown Bonn, where his studio was being extended during the winter months. During this phase of his artistic career, Macke’s interest lay in the further development of painterly techniques through traditional pictorial themes. His paintings were no longer mere representations of nature; rather, what he saw coalesced into a decorative, expressive style of painting, whose compelling visual impact arose from the absence of spatial representation and the dynamic interplay of coloured surfaces. Macke’s watercolour of ‘Susanna at Her Bath’ occupies a special place within his oeuvre as a traditional biblical motif. The starting point is the story of the chaste Susanna from the Book of Daniel, who is secretly observed by two elders whilst bathing and later wrongly accused of infidelity. At the centre of Macke’s composition lies a naked female figure on a pink cloth, surrounded by luminous shades of blue of varying intensity and depth, which create an atmosphere of water, light and movement. Behind her, the faces of two elderly men appear as silhouettes, gazing from their hiding places at the young woman’s exposed body. In contrast to the traditional depiction of ‘Susanna at the Bath’, Macke is less interested in the narrative or moral dimension of the subject matter, but rather uses the motif as an opportunity for a formal exploration of the interplay between colour, surface and figure. The female figure is not primarily an object of voyeuristic observation, but part of a compositional harmony, embedded in a network of brightly coloured flat forms. The play premiered on 28 February 1910 at the Kammerspiele of the Deutsches Theater Berlin.

Inscribed 'Tegernsee 1910 1912' and 'Knaben am Wasser 1911[?]' verso in pencil and with a slightly faded stamp "Nachlass AUGUST MACKE" (Lugt 1775b). The motif of bathers in nature is a popular artistic subject, as it allows the depiction of the nude to be combined with a landscape view. August Macke, too, made use of the diverse interpretative possibilities offered by this theme, which runs through his oeuvre in varying stylistic forms. Whilst in paintings such as "Komposition: Badende Jünglinge" (1911, Heiderich 343) or "Badende Frauen" (1913, Wilhelm-Hack-Museum, Ludwigshafen, Heiderich 494) the ornamental forms of the bodies and the landscape merge, in our "Drei Knaben am Wasser" he focuses primarily on the spectacular landscape backdrop. The bathing pleasure of three boys at a mountain lake is rendered in delicate pastel tones and captures the carefree atmosphere of a summer’s day.

Artistic consolidation and formal clarification August Macke is considered a precocious artist of German Expressionism and the epitome of a style of painting that combines joie de vivre, colour and modernity. As a member of the legendary artist group "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider) and the intellectual centre of the Rhenish Expressionists, he was at the heart of an era that reinvented vision and painting. Influenced by the French avant-garde – he travelled to Paris in 1907, 1908 and 1912 – Macke developed his own distinctive visual language. His paintings continue to fascinate today with their colourful lightness, transforming the everyday into the poetic: people strolling, bright shop windows, harmonious landscapes and still lifes. Although his life ended tragically early on the battlefields of the First World War, August Macke left behind a significant body of work of timeless radiance, which impressively demonstrates his central role in the development of modern painting. In 1911, August Macke found himself at an important point in his development. At the beginning of the previous year, he had met Franz Marc in Munich, with whom he formed an artistically inspiring and supportive friendship. In November, he returned with his family from a long stay at Lake Tegernsee to his hometown of Bonn, where his studio was being expanded during the winter months. At this stage in his artistic career, Macke was interested in further developing his painting techniques using traditional pictorial themes. His paintings were no longer mere representations of nature; rather, what he saw was combined into decorative, expressive paintings whose compelling visual impact was created by the absence of spatial representation and the exciting interplay of coloured surface. Biblical motif in the language of modernism Macke's watercolour painting "Susanna in the Bath" occupies a special place within his oeuvre as a traditional biblical motif. The starting point is the story of the chaste Susanna from the Book of Daniel, who is secretly observed by two elders while bathing and later unjustly accused of infidelity. At the centre of Macke's composition lies a naked female figure on a pink cloth, surrounded by bright blue tones of varying intensity and depth, creating an atmosphere of water, light and movement. Behind her, the faces of two older men appear as silhouettes, watching the young woman's naked body from behind cover. In contrast to the traditional depiction of "Susanna at the Bath," Macke is less interested in the narrative or moral dimension of the subject matter, using the motif instead as an opportunity for a formal exploration of the harmony between colour, surface and figure. The female figure is not primarily an object of voyeuristic observation, but part of a compositional harmony, embedded in a network of brightly coloured surface forms. In the portrait study of Katharina Koehler, Macke’s personal style breaks away from his academic style. The brushwork becomes freer, and the color itself carries the emotion. Instead of objective observation, a lively interplay of colored areas and light takes center stage - a step toward the vibrant chromatic expressiveness that characterizes his mature work. This work was also created within the circle of the Koehler family, the family of Macke’s wife Elisabeth, who played a decisive role in supporting him. Bernhard Koehler, Elisabeth´s uncle, became a central patron of the avant-garde: he supported August Macke and Franz Marc, supported the publication of Der Blaue Reiter, and backed Herwarth Walden’s exhibition project, Erster Deutscher Herbstsalon in Berlin, thereby providing visibility and infrastructure for the new artistic movement. The Koehler family was vital to the avant-garde because they did not merely purchase art – they enabled it. Bernhard Koehler established regular stipends for artists, opened his Berlin villa as a museum for modern art, and generously lent works for exhibitions – acting as a catalyst for networks, public awareness, and the art market. At the same time, he acquired significant works of European modernism at an early stage (including Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, van Gogh, Gauguin, Matisse) and built an outstanding collection of Macke and Marc. This unique combination of financial support, curatorial vision, and logistical aid made the Koehler family central figures in the milieu of the early twentieth-century avant-garde.

Dated "1911" by Elisabeth Erdmann-Macke in India ink lower right. Stamped "Nachlass August Macke" (Lugt 1775b) verso, therein inscribed "Farb. Zeichn. 60" in India ink and alongside that dated and titled "Baum und Segelboot I. 1911". In connection with his poster designs for the 1911 "Ausstellung Bonner Künstler" at the Städtisches Museum Bonn, August Macke created several drawings - some of them also on the squared notepad paper used here - depicting a sailing boat on the Rhine in front of the characteristic silhouette of the Drachenfels (cf. Heiderich drawings 806-840). The idyllic view offered here is probably the most impressive work in this series, with the tree placed in the center creating a harmoniously balanced composition.

With this illustrious depiction of the famous hero of the novel Don Quixote, August Macke builds on paintings by Honoré Daumier dealing with the same motif: “Don Quixote on the Way to Camacho’s Wedding”, created in 1850 (now in the Bridgestone Museum of Art, Tokyo), and “Don Quixote”, created around 1868 (now in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen – Neue Pinakothek, Munich). With his monumental and grotesque style, which unites drama and humour, Honoré Daumier provided an important model for August Macke. “His favourite works included the Don Quixote, and he had already familiarised himself with the Berlin version in 1907. Addressing Elisabeth he praised these ‘brilliant grand lines, which contain so much that is unsettling, appalling and ridiculously comical. We see an outrageously tall person on a nag disappearing into a ravine and a very fat little man reluctantly riding after him. The thing is a jewel’” (Heiderich, in: exh. cat.
