Charles Hodge Mackie RSA, RSW (1862-1920) The Ducal Palace, Venice, 1911 signed in the plate and bearing the dedication 'To Walter Sickert' woodblock 42 x 54cm Despite his strong connection to Edinburgh, travel served as a crucial wellspring of inspiration for the Scottish artist, Charles Hodge Mackie. In the early stages of his career, financial constraints initially confined his excursions to the local countryside. As his financial circumstances improved, he extended his explorations to rural areas in East Lothian, Fife and the Borders where he engaged in direct landscape painting from nature. By the 1890s, Mackie's artistic horizons underwent further expansion. A pivotal moment occurred in 1892 when he ventured to Brittany and encountered Paul Sérusier, the leader of Les Nabis. This encounter propelled him to subsequent visits to Paris, where he engaged with prominent Symbolist artists, prompting Mackie to experiment with Symbolism in his own artistic practice. Between 1903 and 1904, Mackie embarked on a tour of Spain and increased his time spent in France, portraying scenic farms in Normandy and Picardy. In contrast to his Symbolist period, these later works showcased a more nuanced treatment of color and light, aligning with the preferences of the discerning Scottish art market. However, Venice emerged as a profound fascination for Mackie, marking a significant juncture in his career during his inaugural visit in 1908. Supported by patrons such as Andrew Carnegie, Ernest Auldjo Jamieson, and John James Cowan, Mackie embarked on several extended trips to Venice between 1908 and 1914. During these visits, he produced an extensive body of work, including oil paintings, watercolors, and a notable series of three colored woodcut prints inspired by Venetian vistas. In addition to his versatile artistic portfolio, influenced by his extensive travels and collaborative spirit with fellow artists, Mackie is also esteemed for his contributions to the local artistic community. As a founder member and chairman of the Society of Scottish Artists, he played a pivotal role in fostering and shaping the artistic landscape in his region.

CHARLES HODGE MACKIE R.S.A., R.S.W., P.S.S.A. (SCOTTISH 1862-1920) STUDYING TINTORETTO IN THE DUCAL PALACE Signed, inscribed verso, oil on panel (53cm x 65cm (20.75in x 25.5in)) Exhibited: Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, 1920, no. 47 This work was created as a result of Mackie's painting trips to Venice before 1914. He exhibited it in the Royal Scottish Academy's Annual Exhibition of 1920, shortly before his death. In their first review of the exhibition, The Scotman's art critic singled Mackie out for praise, writing that his 'Venetian and Spanish night scenes are marked by rich colour and accomplished artistry' going on to describe the present painting as a 'finely handled study of an apartment in the Doge’s Palace, with its superb decorations by Tintoretto.' The paper's fourth notice about the show declared of Mackie that 'with him design is not so much imposed upon an observed effect as a process which, taking up that effect, accentuates it by stressing the light and shade, by controlling it, and by emphasizing the main colour harmony by regulating the quantities and, if need be by enriching them by contrast, discord or extension of the scale in a selected direction. This is seen very felicitously in the Spanish night scene...and more obviously, although still very happily in Studying Tintoretto in the Ducal Palace.' Dec. 09, 2021

    Est: £5,000 - £7,000

CHARLES HODGE MACKIE R.S.A., R.S.W., P.S.S.A. (SCOTTISH 1862-1920) CA' D'ORO, VENICE Signed, inscribed with title verso, oil on panel (73cm x 61cm (28.75in x 24in)) Footnote: Note: A painting with this title was exhibited at the R.S.A. 1915, no.102 The work of Charles Hodge Mackie was recently celebrated in a major exhibition at the City Art Centre, Edinburgh. It revealed the importance of Venice to him as a rich source of subject matter, as seen in Ca d'Oro, Venice. Curator Dr. Helen Scott wrote that his time in the city 'resulted in a compelling group of oil paintings, watercolours and woodcuts, which capture the city at its most atmospheric.' This can be seen in the present work. A bridge, glimpses of gondolas and boats with unfurled sails dominate the foreground and right-hand side of the composition. They give way to a delicately realised expanse of the Grand Canal, in which Mackie has skilfully captured the effect of light and reflections on its surface. In the background the finely-wrought facade of the magnificent titular palace is seen, under a mixture of shadow and sunshine. It is possible that Ca d'Oro, Venice is the untraced painting mentioned in Pat Clark's 2016 monograph about Mackie. She wrote 'It is disappointing to say that Mackie's painting of one of the most magnificent buildings in Venice, shown at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1915, has not been traced. The subject was the Ca' d'Oro or House of Gold....He exhibited the painting again at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 1916, asking a mere £63, but there is no record of sale. it was also shown at the Royal Academy in London the next year. It must have found an appreciative buyer since it was loaned to the 1921 Memorial Exhibition by 'Sir P. Jeffrey Mackie Barr'...Perhaps it will surface again.' (Pat Clark, People, Places and Piazzas: The Life and Art of Charles H. Mackie, Bristol 2016, p. 116).
