Charles Rennie Mackintosh Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Water color painter, b. 1868 - d. 1928

Artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a pioneer in the Arts and Crafts and Scottish Art Nouveau movements, was an architect, designer, and watercolor painter. Born in 1868, Mackintosh began an architectural apprenticeship at age 16 while also taking evening lessons at the Glasgow School of Art. His building and furniture designs were meticulously detailed, but the start of World War I dampened his career prospects.

A consummate artist, Charles Rennie Mackintosh dedicated himself in 1914 to watercolor instead. With flowers being their most common subjects, paintings by Charles Rennie Mackintosh exhibit the same delicate lines of his draft work. Sadly, he only achieved recognition posthumously, and the simplicity of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's furniture designs appeal greatly to modern furniture makers. Collectors can find showstopping vintage furniture for sale at auction and online when looking for prized pieces.

CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH (1968-1928) FOR MISS CRANSTON'S ARGYLE STREET TEA ROOMS STOOL, 1898 stained oak 44.5cm wide, 38.5cm high, 38cm deep Provenance: Private Collection, Glasgow Literature: Billcliffe R. Charles Rennie Mackintosh: The Complete Furniture, Furniture Drawings & Interior Designs, Cameron & Hollis, 2009, pp. 10-12, 55, 56 and 59., 1898.H where the stools are illustrated in situ, and 1898.34 where this example is illustratedHowarth T. Charles Rennie Mackintosh and The Modern Movement. Routledge and Kegan Paul 1952, pl. 49BNote: In 1898, early in Mackintosh’s career entrepreneur Catherine Cranston - known as Miss Cranston - commissioned him to furnish her new rooms at her tearooms on Argyle Street, Glasgow. Miss Cranston was to be an important patron for the young architect, who came to rely on a relatively small number of patrons throughout his career. The commission afforded Mackintosh a new freedom to experiment, whilst leading to further projects, including the Ingram Street Tea Rooms (1900) and the Willow Tea Rooms (1903)The work at Argyle Street followed on from his previous work at Miss Cranston's new Buchannan Street Tea Rooms, which had been conceived two years earlier in 1896. mackintosh was commissioned to decorate the walls with designer George Walton the furnishings. In this new undertaking, however, Mackintosh found himself in a role reversal, being fully in charge of the furnishings whilst Walton was preoccupied with designing the interiors. The furniture Mackintosh designed for these new rooms exhibit a new, more robust evolution of his repertoire and established a style for much of his work up to 1900. The bold and simple aesthetic of the designs marked him out from his contemporaries, and for the first time the distinctive furniture he produced was also employed to define and separate the rooms as designed by Walton. This rare stool, one of five seen in contemporary photographs, was part of a group of furniture he designed for the Billiards and Smoking Rooms, which occupied the building's top two floors above the tea and luncheon rooms. The tearooms were a haven from the city for both men and women, however the Smoking and Billiards Rooms were purely a masculine domain and the design and construction of the furniture is a reflection of that fact.Combining English Arts & Crafts and Scottish vernacular design, Mackintosh produced three types of sturdy and generous seating for these rooms; a ladderback armchair, its long, rectangular back rail adorned with ascending wooden slats; a cube shaped armchair, a version of the previous chair without the tall back; and a stool, only seen in the Smoking Room from contemporary photographs. All of the furniture was either clear-varnished or dark-stained and waxed. The construction of the stools is traditional, although the panelling and distinctively shaped cut-out handles to each side certainly not. The shaped seat is reflected in the other seating in these rooms. The Argyle Street Tea Rooms closed in 1920, and much of the furniture was dispersed. The robust construction of the furniture has helped them withstand many years of use, however it is their beautiful and functional design which has stood the test of time.

Since 1973, Cassina has been reissuing Mackintosh's designs in collaboration with furniture craftsmen from Meda, in the Brianza region, north of Milan. Backrest structure in solid ash wood stained in black. Base in ash-veneered beech plywood stained in black. Cushion in polyurethane foam and upholstery in green velvet. It is, however, in the style of his Walberswick flowers of 1914-15. Mackintosh's spelling was always idiosyncratic: his attempt at the Linnean name of the flower shows it no less unusual in Latin than in English.'

CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH (1868-1928) SKETCH FOR A BLOCK OF STUDIOS AND FLATS FOR THE ARTS LEAGUE OF SERVICE, GLEBE PLACE, CHELSEA pencil and bodycolour on tracing paper, laid down on board 13cm x 12.5cm (frame size 24cm x 28.5cm) Provenance: The artist, by whom given toMajor Desmond Chapman-Huston, by whom given to Francis WebbPrivate Collection Exhibited: Glasgow, McLellan Galleries, Mackintosh Memorial Exhibition, May 1933.Note: In early 1920, Mackintosh received several commissions for buildings on the site of Old Chelsea House, including designs for three studios for Arthur Cadogan Blunt, Harold Squire and Francis Derwent Wood. The Arts League of Service also commissioned this block of studios and flats for the south side of Glebe Place, facing Upper Cheyne Row. Founded in a spirit of idealism after the First World War, the Arts League of Service set itself the task of 'placing within the reach of everyone higher forms of entertainment, and opportunities for the enjoyment of any art or craft', and set out to bring the arts into everyday life. The dramatic design was never executed as the Arts League ran out of money, but its experimental form is one of Mackintosh's most compelling late schemes.

CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH (1868-1928) ‘GRASS HYACINTHE’, 1915 pencil and watercolour, signed with initials CRM and MMM, inscribed and dated lower centre GRASS HYACINTHE/ WALBERSWICK/ 1915 27cm x 20cm (frame size 42cm x 35cm) Provenance: Cyril Gerber Fine Art, GlasgowCollection of Donald and Eleanor TaffnerPrivate Collection  Note: Charles Rennie Mackintosh is today celebrated as a leading pioneer of modernism and his 1915 enigmatic pencil and watercolour sketch ‘Hyacinthe’, dates from a period of great change and turbulence for the artist. In June 1914, he and his wife Margaret Macdonald travelled from Glasgow to the Suffolk coastal town of Walberswick, economic recession having rendered Mackintosh’s home city increasingly hostile to his architectural business. The firm of which he was a partner had completed the celebrated Glasgow School of Art in 1909, but by the mid 1910’s was struggling to find work. Having split from the firm, Mackintosh journeyed to East Anglia for a countryside escape. ‘Hyacinthe’ is one of around thirty to forty similar works executed during his stay. It has been suggested that the series was commissioned by a German publisher, the progress of the prospective publication halted by the advent of World War I.Like many coastal towns in Britain, Walberswick became an artists’ retreat during the summer months, providing solace and inspiration to creatives including Philip Wilson Steer, E. A. Walton and Mary Newbery. Mary Newbery, was the daughter of Frances Newbery, headmaster at the Glasgow School of Art and friend of Mackintosh. It is thought that the Newberys encouraged Mackintosh to paint to help him come to terms with his disappointment and to heal his soul. Pencil and paper sketches were not a novel form to Mackintosh, and in many ways represented a return to his former oeuvre. From his student days in the 1880s, he used sketches to process design ideas. His early drawings were more technical and regularly harnessed by the young artist as a means of experimenting with stylised plant forms to create patterns. Furthermore, nature-based subjects were familiar to the artist, having sketched the flora of his surroundings whilst on holidays in Britain and beyond from 1901. The Walberswick sketches, however, represent a shift in artistic style. Gone are the architectural explorations, replaced instead with a marriage of the technical botanical drawing and free, creative expression of the natural world. ‘Hyacinthe’ bears not only the monogram signature of Charles but also that of his wife Margaret, confirming her presence at the time of painting. The misspelled plant name is a common feature in his work, leading to speculation that he was dyslexic. The stay at Walberswick lasted fourteen months, its end only prompted by Charles’ arrest on suspicion of being a German spy, such was his tendency to study the East Anglian coastal landscape which aroused the suspicions of the local community. Artistically however it provided the artist with an opportunity to sharpen the clarity of his artistic vision, with many followers believing the Walberswick sketches to be amongst his finest works.

CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH (Scotland, 1868 - 1928) by Cassina. Chair "Hill House 1", Edited c. 1980. Black stained ash and green leatherette upholstered seat. It has stains on the upholstery and marks of use. It has signature and serial number. Measurements: 141 x 41 x 35 cm. Chair designed by Mackintosh in 1903. It is one of the first designs of the modern movement, and was created for the living room of the Hill House, built in 1902 in Helensburgh by Mackintosh himself. Years earlier, at the Viennese Secession Exhibition, the architect had presented a series of high-backed chairs including the Argyle, another of his most famous designs. The Hill House chair is characterized by its high back, decorated with straight forms that would later inspire members of the Wiener Werkstätte. Mackintosh was a Scottish architect, designer and watercolorist who played a key role in the Arts & Crafts movement, and who was also the leading exponent of Art Nouveau in the United Kingdom. He decided to devote himself to architecture when he was only sixteen years old, and during his life he dedicated himself to transforming the buildings, furniture and art of Glasgow. Virtually all of his furniture creations were designed by Mackintosh for the tea rooms he decorated, the most famous of which was the Willow Tea Room. He rose to fame after exhibiting his pieces at the Vienna Secession exhibition of 1900. In fact, his style was one of the most prominent of modernism in its geometric version, also practiced by the Viennese. Thus, he developed a work marked by decorative sobriety and straight lines. He shares with organic modernism the search for asymmetry and inspiration in the plant world, but his interpretation is radically different. Most of his work is collected in the Hunterian Art Gallery of the University of Glasgow, as well as in the Metropolitan Museum and MoMA in New York, the Orsay Museum in Paris, the Design Museum, the Tate Gallery and the Victoria & Albert in London, among others. It has stains on the upholstery and marks of use.

CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH (Scotland, 1868 - 1928) by Alivar. "Armchair model 312 Willow". Edited in 1985. Black stained ash and green leatherette upholstered seat. It has marks of use. Presents stamp on the inside of the seat cover. Measurements: 119 x 94 x 43 cm. This throne-shaped armchair is a 1985 edition of the model that Charles Rennie donated, in 1904, to the "Willow Tea Rooms" in Glasgow, his hometown. The tall semicircular backrest served to separate the entrance area from the tea room behind it. The back encompasses the seat, perfectly illustrating Mackintosh's geometric, Art Nouveau style. The creation of this chair involved the marriage of the most advanced technology and the finest carpentry skills. The latter can be seen in the precision required to assemble the components that make up the elegant, lightweight latticed frame. Mackintosh was a Scottish architect, designer and watercolorist who played a key role in the Arts & Crafts movement and was also the leading exponent of Art Nouveau in the United Kingdom.
