Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Lithographer

Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz (9 February 1815 – 10 June 1894) was a Spanish painter.

Born in Rome, he was the son of José de Madrazo y Agudo, the painter and former Director of the Prado Museum. Federico's grandfather on his mother side was Tadeusz Kuntze, a Polish painter. His brothers were Luis de Madrazo, a painter, Pedro de Madrazo, an art critic and Juan de Madrazo, an architect. Among his children were Ricardo de Madrazo, also a painter, Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta and Cecilia de Madrazo who married the great Orientalist artist, Marià Fortuny.[4] The Madrazo family have been described as one of the most important painting dynasties, who literally dominated 19th-century painting in Spain.[5]

He received his first instruction from his father. While still attending the classes at the Royal Academy of San Fernando, he painted his first picture, The Resurrection of Christ (1829), which was purchased by Queen Christina. Not long afterwards he painted Achilles in his Tent, and subsequently presented to the Academy The Continence of Scipio, which secured him admission as a member "for merit".[6]

While decorating the palace of Vista Alegre he took up portraiture. In 1832 he went to Paris, where he studied under Franz Winterhalter, and painted portraits of Baron Taylor and Ingres. In 1837 he was commissioned to produce a picture for the gallery at Versailles, and painted "Godfrey de Bouillon proclaimed King of Jerusalem". The artist then returned to Rome, where he worked at various subjects, sacred and profane. Then he painted Maria Christina in the Dress of a Nun by the Bedside of Ferdinand III (1843), Queen Isabella, The Duchess of Medinaceli, and The Countess de Vilches (1845–47), besides a number of portraits of the Spanish aristocracy, some of which were sent to the exhibition of 1855.[6]

He received the Legion of Honour in 1846. He was made a corresponding member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts on 10 December 1853, and in 1873, on the death of Schnorr, the painter, he was chosen foreign member. Three years after his father left office, he also became Director of the Museo del Prado and president of the Academy of San Fernando. He originated in Spain the production of art reviews and journals, such as El Artista, El Renacimiento, and El Semanario pintoresco. He died in Madrid.[6]

His brother, Luis de Madrazo, was also known as a painter, chiefly by his Burial of Saint Cecilia (1855). Federico's best-known pupils were his sons, Raimundo and Ricardo.

    Est: -

FEDERICO DE MADRAZO Y KUNTZ Rome 1815 - Madrid 1894 Portrait of the painter's friend, Adrien Dauzats. 1839 Oil on canvas Signed, dated, and dedicated Dimensions: 77 x 57.5 cm On the reverse, an old label from the artists' supply store A. BINANT, 7 Rue de Cléry, Paris, and A. OTTOZ, Rue de la Michidière, Paris. Work exhibited: - Salon of the Louvre, Paris, 1845. Provenance: - Federico de Madrazo Collection, Madrid. - Raimundo de Madrazo Collection, Versailles. - Private collection, Paris. "I have finished the portrait of Dauzats, which has been very well received by those who have seen it, and which its owner will frame beautifully for display next year, if possible (...) I would be very pleased if you could see the portrait of Dauzats; in it I have tried to indicate the movement or rotation of the skin both in the head and in the hands. I truly believe you will not dislike it." (Correspondence, Letter to José Madrazo, August 25, 1839 and August 31, 1839) This portrait by Federico de Madrazo depicts his friend, the French painter and traveler Adrien Dauzats, and is an eloquent testament to the close personal and professional relationship that united both artists during the Spanish master's formative years in Paris. Madrazo captures Dauzats in a reflective and elegant pose, his head resting on his hand and his gaze directed straight at the viewer, a device that intensifies the sitter's psychological impact. The chromatic restraint, dominated by deep blacks and neutral backgrounds, contrasts with the delicate luminosity of the face and the subtle touch of red on the lapel, demonstrating the assimilation of contemporary French portraiture principles and the technical refinement Madrazo achieved during these years. This portrait bears a direct relation to the earlier effigy of Dauzats painted by Madrazo in 1837, now held at the Musée National du Château de Versailles (51 x 44 cm). Comparing the two canvases, the 1839 work reveals an evolution toward greater monumentality and compositional sophistication, enlarging the format and accentuating the intimate character through the handwritten dedication. The repetition of the same subject in two such closely spaced periods confirms the strength of the friendship between Madrazo and Dauzats, forged in the Parisian artistic milieu and grounded in shared interests: portraiture, travel, and cultural exchange between Spain and France. Dauzats, renowned for his Orientalist scenes and architectural views, shared with Madrazo not only academic and social circles, but also a Romantic sensibility that valued introspection and the dignification of the individual. The 1839 canvas can thus be interpreted as a work of homage and affection, where technical virtuosity is placed at the service of a personal relationship. Beyond its artistic value, it constitutes a visual document of a fruitful friendship that contributed to the mutual enrichment of both artists and to the international consolidation of the young Madrazo within the 19th-century European art scene.

Federico Madrazo. Pair of portraits by Benito Sori

    Est: -

Two miniature oil paintings on canvas by Federico de Madrazo, depicting the painter Benito Soriano Murillo and his wife. The miniature portraying Benito Soriano Murillo is a faithful reproduction, in a smaller format, of the celebrated Portrait of the Painter Benito Soriano Murillo held in the Prado Museum, a work painted by Federico de Madrazo in 1855. The second miniature depicts Soriano Murillo's wife, Manuela Berroeta, alongside the portrait of the painter. Their inclusion reinforces the personal and commemorative nature of the set, possibly related to Soriano Murillo's marriage in 1862, the year in which Federico de Madrazo painted another portrait of the artist. Benito Soriano Murillo was a painter, copyist, teacher, and art critic, a prominent figure in the 19th-century Spanish art scene. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, he developed a career closely linked to official art institutions. His professional activity focused especially on history painting, portraiture, and copying Old Masters, a discipline in which he achieved considerable prestige. He maintained a very close professional and personal relationship with Federico de Madrazo, who entrusted him with making copies for the Crown and state museums. This collaboration falls within the context of the 19th-century museum reorganization and explains the affinity between the two artists. In 1865, Soriano Murillo was appointed deputy director of the Museo de la Trinidad, a position he held for several key years in the management of the national artistic heritage, coinciding with Madrazo's tenure as director of the Prado Museum. This lot is of great historical, artistic, and documentary interest, as it brings together two portraits closely linked both to each other and to a reference work held in the Prado Museum. The pair of miniatures constitutes a unique testimony to the personal and professional relationships between artists in 19th-century Spain, as well as to the practice of private portraiture by one of the great masters of the genre. Organized by Justo Bou". Witcomb Salon, Florida 364. Buenos Aires, 1923. Fig Nº2. Damaged. Signed. Measurements: 146 x 114 cm. In this painting Federico de Madrazo transcends the genre of the portrait to give us a testimony of the bourgeoisie of the time, a delicate and courteous image that catches the eye of the spectator. As in the rest of his production, Madrazo emphasizes the personality of the protagonist, making a psychological study of the model, in which he shows the woman with great distinction and sobriety. He applies a short and precise brushstroke on the drawing, especially noticeable in the neckline with the shoulders partially uncovered. The work is an example of Madrazo's style, characterized by simplicity and naturalness, with a distant serenity in the portraits and by his mastery in the representation of the textures of the dresses. Federico Madrazo, son of the painter José de Madrazo, when he was in Rome in the service of Charles IV in exile, Federico de Madrazo moved with his family to Madrid when his father was appointed painter of Fernando VII's chamber in 1819. Shortly thereafter, the Royal Museum of Paintings was inaugurated, an institution that would be a key element in the life of Federico de Madrazo. During his childhood and youth he visited it frequently with his father, who was in fact responsible for the lithographic establishment of the museum since 1826, and its director between 1838 and 1857. A precocious painter, Federico de Madrazo was admitted as an academician of merit in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando when he was only sixteen years old. During these years of youth he founded with his brother Pedro the magazine "El Artista", which was an important romantic novelty, and in which Federico was in charge of the illustrations. In 1832 he went to Paris to study painting with Ingres, a friend of his father. There he acquired a romantic style in the French manner. In 1840 he continued his training in Rome, where he came into contact with the Nazarenes and, in particular, with Overbeck, which strengthened his drawing skills, already important in his style thanks to what he had learned from his father and Ingres. An illustrative work about this Nazarene influence in Madrazo is "Las Marías en el sepulcro". Two years later he returned to Spain, becoming a painter of great prestige, much sought after as a portrait painter by the aristocracy of Madrid. Chamber painter to Queen Isabella II, he was the great official portraitist of the time. His portraits were characterized by the simplicity and naturalness of his models, and by a distant serenity, intimately linked to the romantic feeling. He was also director of the Prado Museum, a position he held, albeit interrupted, for thirty years until his death. He also directed the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. He developed a brilliant career as a history painter and, especially, as a portrait painter, achieving great prestige in the artistic circles not only in Madrid, but also in Paris and Rome. His production evolves from a painting where the purism of the line and the careful detailing predominate towards a more fluid and spontaneous technique, of greater expressive depth. Federico de Madrazo is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the National Museum of the Palace of Versailles, the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao, the Lázaro Galdiano Foundation and the Romantic Museum in Madrid, among others. Work reproduced in the catalog: "Spanish Painting. Federico de Madrazo exhibition. Organized by Justo Bou". Witcomb Salon, Florida 364. Buenos Aires, 1923. Fig Nº2. Presents restorations.

FEDERICO DE MADRAZO Y KUNTZ (Rome, 1815 - Madrid, 1894) and LUIS DE MADRAZO Y KUNTZ (Madrid, 1825 - 1897). "Jesus in the house of Simon the Pharisee", 1842. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Copy of the work "Christ in the House of Simon the Pharisee" in 1737 by Pierre Subleyras (France 1699 - 1749) located in the Louvre Museum. Measurements: 56 x 120 cm, 87 x 151 cm. This oil painting represents the moment in which Mary of Bethany bends down to wash Jesus' feet, in the house of Simon the Pharisee, according to the episode described in the Gospel of Luke. The Madrazo brothers have taken the subject as an excuse to develop a scene full of luxury in its classically inspired architecture, in the description of the food, the hustle and bustle of the servants, and the variety of types and attire. Known to be a woman of bad life, Mary washes the feet of the Messiah with her own tears, then wipes them with her hair. The Pharisee who had invited Jesus then thought that Jesus was a false prophet, since he had not realized the kind of person who was touching him. Jesus then explained to him, with a parable, how he whom you forgive the most, loves you the most. After this, he told the woman that her sins were forgiven. They manage to reflect the scene perfectly, with Simon indignant at the events, Magdalene with her long blond hair drying the Lord's feet, and the Lord showing love to her. The rest of the men seated around the table, in gestures and countenances show their displeasure. Federico de Madrazo, son of the neoclassical painter José de Madrazo, studied at the school of Alberto Lista, in Madrid, and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. A precocious painter, he was admitted as an academician of merit in San Fernando at the age of sixteen. In 1832 he went to Paris to study painting with Ingres, a friend of his father. There he acquired a romantic style in the French manner. In 1840 he continued his training in Rome, where he came into contact with the Nazarenes and, in particular, with Overbeck, which reinforced his drawing skills, already important in his style thanks to what he had learned from his father and Ingres. He is represented in the Prado Museum, the National Museum of the Palace of Versailles, the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao, the Lázaro Galdiano Foundation and the Romantic Museum of Madrid, among others. Luis de Madrazo, son of José de Madrazo and brother of Federico and Pedro, enjoyed great prestige in life, being first a professor (professor of Drawing of the Ancient and Ropajes) and then director of the School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving of Madrid, and recognized with honors such as the appointment of commander of the Order of Isabel the Catholic, as well as academic of number of the Real de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. He cultivated religious and historical themes, although he was especially praised as a portraitist. He began his training with his father, and later expanded it at the Escuela de San Fernando, in Madrid. Already in 1845 we find him working, collaborating as an illustrator in "El Semanario Pintoresco". Later he will also work as a draftsman for the "Semanario Pintoresco Español". In 1848 he went to Rome to further his artistic studies at the National Academy of San Lucas and the French Academy of the Villa Medici. In Rome he came into contact with Friedrich Overbeck, through Antonio Solá. From the German romantic painter he received a powerful Nazarene influence, which can be seen from then on in his work. Later he will make a trip that will take him to Paris, Venice, Munich and Berlin, to finally return to Italy in the 1890s, settling in Pompeii with the painters Bernardino Montañés and Francisco Sáinz. He finally returned to Spain to begin his teaching career in San Fernando, and was introduced into the artistic circles of Madrid by his father and his brother Federico. With the latter he collaborated in the Prado Museum. As a painter, Luis de Madrazo devoted himself almost exclusively to portraiture, working for official bodies and also for the nobility. He made known his work, characterized by the purity of lines and the chromatic and luminous sharpness typical of the strictest Nazarene aesthetics, through various competitions and official exhibitions held both in Spain and abroad. Thus, in 1855 he obtained an important success at the Universal Exposition of Paris, and the following year he would win the first medal at the National Fine Arts of Madrid, for his work "Pelayo en Covadonga" (Pelayo in Covadonga). He was also awarded a silver medal at the Franco-Spanish Exhibition of 1864. Luis de Madrazo is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the Royal Academy of History in Madrid, the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in the same city and other outstanding public and private collections. Copy of the work "Christ in the House of Simon the Pharisee" in 1737 by Pierre Subleyras (France 1699 - 1749) located in the Louvre Museum.

In this portrait of the II Marquis of Viluma, Madrazo shows his artistic quality and skill. In spite of being a work that belongs to an early period of the painter, it is possible to appreciate a great elegance, rotundity and sobriety in the physical and psychological capture of the protagonist. The work follows the models of the time imposed in the portrait genre. Upright and slightly turned in three quarters, the marquis directs his gaze towards the viewer showing pride, but not arrogance. As usual, the background is neutral without the presence of any element that detracts from the main figure, also both the chromatic range based on a palette of dark tones, as well as the lighting used by Madrazo provide greater aesthetic relevance to the protagonist, since the only points of light are his pink face, the collar of his shirt and slightly the sleeve and the glow of the Cross of Calatrava and the Grand Cross of Carlos III, hanging on his chest. The relationship of the protagonist with Madrazo was established through the portrayed's parents; Ángela Ceballos Olarria and Joaquín González de La Pezuela, Marquis of Viluma and Virey of Peru, who had already been portrayed by the artist a year before. Son of the painter José de Madrazo, who was also in Rome at the service of Charles IV in exile, Federico de Madrazo moved with his family to Madrid when his father was appointed painter of Fernando VII's chamber in 1819. Shortly thereafter, the Royal Museum of Paintings was inaugurated, an institution that would be a key element in the life of Federico de Madrazo. During his childhood and youth he visited it frequently with his father, who was in fact responsible for the lithographic establishment of the museum from 1826, and its director between 1838 and 1857. Retrato femenino

    Est: -
