Col (ll); also signed by both artists and inscribed on the reverse as follows: The undersigned declares that this picture has been painted by himself to the order of A. D' Huyvetter, Jr. of Antwerp./E.R. Maes/Je déclare avoir peint les figures ci-contre./David Col, Antwerp Oil on canvas 25 5/8 x 19 7/8 inches (65 x 50.5 cm) Frame 32 x 26 inches (81.3 x 66 cm) According to his obituary in the New York Times, which appeared November 24, 1887, Albert Gommare Joseph D'Huyvetter was born in Antwerp, Belgium on November 19, 1811. He moved to New York in 1852, his family following him in 1887. He established a business importing paintings, "many of them being by famous artists," most of the Flemish school. He was injured in a traffic accident in 1885 and died two years later at the home of his son-in-law in Brooklyn. Strip-lined; then lined with a clear sheet of what appears to be laminating film, presumably to preserve the inscription. Very little visible under UV light. Some posible scattered touches of restoration.
