Rückseitig typographisch bezeichnet »Nachlass Michel Majerus, vom Künstler autorisierte einmalige Auflage für die griffelkunst 2002«. – Michel Majerus (1967–2002) lebte und arbeitete bis zu seinem Unfalltod in Berlin. Anlässlich einer Einzelausstellung in der Londoner Tate Gallery, schrieb man dort: »Malerei war Majerus‘ bevorzugtes Ausdrucksmittel, aber sein kreativer Horizont erstreckte sich auf viele Aspekte der Populärkultur, von Computerspielen, digitalen Bildern, Film, Fernsehen und Popmusik bis hin zu Marken und Firmenlogos.« – In der 2002 aus dem Nachlass edierten Folge der sechs leuchtend farbigen Serigraphien machte der Künstler seinen eigenen Namen zum Kunstobjekt. – Die vollständige von der Griffelkunst-Vereinigung Hamburg edierte Folge, Editionsnummern 308 A1–A6. – Makellos. Vollständige Folge der Serie. – Ediert für die Griffelkunst-Vereinigung Hamburg. – »In den neunziger Jahren feierte Majerus den Fun, den Techno, den Trash, die Mode, den Buzz der Großstadt mit dem konservativsten Medium, das man sich als Künstler nur vorstellen kann – der Malerei. Und verscheuchte auf einen Schlag den ganzen Mief, der sich bei manchen seiner Kollegen zwischen Keilrahmen und Leinwand so festgesetzt hatte. In his short creative life, Michel Majerus developed a unique, energetic oeuvre. Pop culture, techno, the metropolis, computer games and advertisements were his main source of inspiration. However, Majerus also found points of friction in art history and in the art scene of his time. With the help of the computer, he dissociated cuttings from advertising graphics or already existing works of art into compositions in which the set pieces stand next to each other in a non-hierarchical manner, enlarged into gigantic blow-ups. He was guided by his keen sense of the relationship between form and colour. (Nicolas Bourriaud, in: Michel Majerus, exhib.cat. Kunstmuseum Stuttgart/CAPC Bordeaux 2012, p.114). ‘Gebilde 2’ is the second painting in a five-part series in which the then 29-year-old Michel Majerus varied a theme within his early work in 1996. That same year, he achieved international breakthrough with his first retrospective in the Kunsthalle Basel, curated by Peter Pakesch. One of the most acclaimed pictures was the spectacular 15-part giant format ‘Zwei große Gebilde’, measuring a total of 480 x 700 cm (see illustration), with each individual panel corresponding to the work ‘Gebilde 2’ in its dimensions of 160 x 140 cm. He examined Andy Warhol and Frank Stella, among others, in the context of the series. Stella’s analytical Colour Field Painting as well as Andy Warhol’s Pop Art colouring and a certain playful seriality of forms and elements also characterise ‘Gebilde 2’.

Signed and dated 'Michel Majerus 90' verso on canvas. The Luxembourgian artist works with quotes and cross-references to the media world and mass culture of the 1990s and relates them to motifs from art history. He uses various techniques for this which are linked together in his large installations and wall paintings producing a mutual effect. ''Throughout his work he subordinates form and colour to a global idea of the contemporary, based on a Pop-influenced - and therefore ambiguous - idea of a dual dominance of the computer monitor and commercial capitalism. This fundamental ambivalence in Majerus' painting is based on his ability to admire the signs of commercial rhetoric and the visual flotsam of the packaging industry, tempered by his belief in the power of art and its ability to open the public's eyes with respect to a toxic environment in which we move. Romance and irony touch and lead to a completely new synthesis: Majerus' art can never decide between the sharpness of a Klippenberger, the influential cult status of Pop Art and the existential commitment of a Basquiat. He manages to keep all of these heterogeneous elements in a kind of precarious balance, to show us the different dimensions of capitalism from visual aggression through alienation and anger to folk poetry.''
