Catalogued and illustrated in: Félix and Amélie Marcilhac, Jacques Majorelle (1886–1962), Répertoire de l‘oeuvre peint, Norma ed. Paris 2017, p. 292, no. 116. Zohra was painted in 1955 and depicts a local girl encountered during one of Majorelle’s many journeys around Morocco. Majorelle first travelled to Marrakech in 1917, where he would eventually spend the rest of his life. There he was captivated by the country’s light, topography, and people. His paintings from this period describe his first impressions of the city, focusing on everyday subjects such as the souks, the streets, and the markets. He first became interested in female subjects during his travels to West Africa between 1945 to 1952. In the present work Majorelle focuses on a local woman. Poses have been carefully chosen to express the sensuality of his model. He uses a highly modern and distinctive technique here by adding gold powder to the composition.

A certificate issued by Amélie Marcilhac, Paris, 19 June 2025, is available upon request. We are grateful to Amélie Marcilhac for kindly confirming the authenticity on the basis of the original. Jacques Majorelle was the son of Louis Majorelle (1859-1926), the celebrated Art Nouveau furniture designer. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and later at the Académie Julian in Paris, exhibiting at the Salon for the first time in 1908. An encounter with Moorish architecture during a trip to Andalusia left a deep impression on him. He travelled to Cairo in search of scenes of local everyday life, and in 1923 settled in Marrakech permanently where he bought a palm grove. Majorelle commissioned architect Paul Sinoir to design a Cubist villa for his property in 1931. He began planting a luxuriant garden which later became known as the Majorelle Garden, drawing inspiration from the coloured tiles he had seen throughout Marrakech. He painted the villa a unique shade of bold cobalt blue, which now carries his name, Majorelle Blue. Majorelle travelled to West Africa, where the present lot was painted, on three occasions: Mali in 1945, Guinea in 1947 and finally the Ivory Coast in 1952. There he became more interested in female subjects and focused on representing local people and their physical beauty in a new and highly modern style. Here, the bare sketched background reinforces the model’s presence.

From 1930 onwards, Jacques Majorelle temporarily abandoned kasbahs and southern landscapes to devote himself to a new theme: nude Negresses. He didn't hesitate to use the technique of metallic oxide to obtain this reflection of gold and silver on black canson to sublimate the brilliance of these ebony bodies that so fascinated him.

Brunk Auctions would like to thank Amelie Marcilhac and the Cabinet Marcilhac for confirming the authenticity of this painting. This lot is accompanied by the Certificate of Authenticity. Provenance: Collection of the Artist, Marrakech; Acquired by his friend, student, and fellow artist, Charles Holbing (studio in Marrakech and a drawing teacher at the Lycee Ibn Abbad), whose widow sold the painting for $400 (for funds to travel back to France) to Ernest Milford and Edith Louise Morgan, North Carolina/North Africa, circa 1950s-1973; By descent in family Note: For more information on the artist see: Felix Marcilhac, La vie et l'œuvre de Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962), Paris, 1988*This painting was sent to be vetted by the experts, Cabinet Marcilhac in France.
