Makarov's paintings have already been sold for up to €100,000 in the auction market Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 120,000 Euro Anastasia Ushakov (1824-1902), born in Koni, represented the type of the Russian female entrepreneurs. After her first husband, Konrad Gubin, was incapacitated, she managed successfully his eight iron foundry companies for 12 years. When Makarov painted the present portrait, Anastasia was already married to her second husband, the General Pavel Ushakov. Ivan Makarov‘s (1822-1897) portraits are characterized by a great love for the detail, visible for instance in the jewelry, the rich fabrics and the garlands of flowers. He therefore earned a reputation as the ‘Russian Winterhalter’ (1805-1873). His works can also be classified in the tradition of Karl Bryullov (1799-1852). It often happened that Makarov did not sign his paintings so that they are authenticated through the quality of execution. Similar portraits by Makarov are on display at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg as well as in Almaty and Grozny. His illustrious models include the Empress Maria Alexandrova, the widow and daughter of Pushkin, and women of famous noble families, for instance the Sheremetyev, the Kochubeyev, the Baryatinsky and the Dolgorukov. Condition: The painting is in very good condition with still fresh looking colors. The canvas has been loosely laid down on fiberboard. The nose shows a small touch-up. The inspection under UV light reveals another tiny point of retouching to the upper background. The frame is slightly chipped. The size of the painting is 147 x 106.5 cm (oval), and the frame measures 172 x 134 cm. Ivan Makarov (1822-1897) Ivan Makarov was the son of the painter Kuzma Alexandrovich Makarov, who studied at the Academy in Azarmas under the guidance of Alexander Stupin. He received his first artistic training with the father and with Stupin. Soon he helped the latter in the execution of church paintings. In 1842 he became a ‘free artist’ of the Russian Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. In 1845 he settled permanently in the city, and studied with the history painter Alexey Markov. After two years he specialized in portraiture and was supported by the Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna. He painted mostly portraits of women and children. In addition, his oeuvre includes icons and religious murals, i.e. ‘God’s Blessing on You’ at the Alexander Palace in St. Petersburg. Private collection, Austria. Acquired from the above by the present owner. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the expert V. Petrov. Portrait of Anastasia Ushakova by Ivan Makarov is an excellent example of the work of this renowned artist and portraitist of the mid to late-19th century, whose works very rarely appear on the market. The biography of its subject is also of particular interest. Makarov, who came from the family of a serf artist in Penza Province, was acclaimed by his contemporaries as the Russian Winterhalter and finest heir of the traditions of Karl Bryullov. There were many strands to his talent. After studying under his namesake, Professor A.T. Makarov, he began a successful career in wall painting, including work on frescoes at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow as well as icon painting. But Makarov made his name with his portraits of contemporary society beauties. His models included the Empress Maria Alexandrovna, the widow and daughter of Pushkin, and female members of prominent noble families (Sheremetyev, Kochubeyev, Baryatinsky and Dolgorukov). Anastasia Ushakova (née Koni, 1824-1902), who looks out at us from this portrait, was an impressive woman. Given in marriage at a young age to Konstantin Gubin, the owner of iron foundries in the Urals, she quickly found herself solely responsible for all of her husband's factories and villages when he was declared incapable by the Russian Senate. She set about transforming the loss-making factories into exemplary businesses, repaid all of her husband's debts, settled sums owed to the Russian government, rehired workers who had left the factories and ensured payment of their wages. In just twelve years this remarkable woman carried out a complete reconstruction of the iron foundries, approved the installation of new equipment and new facilities, and built a church in the workers' settlement of Nizhny Ufaley, near Chelyabinsk. By the time this portrait was painted Anastasia Iosifovna had remarried Major-General Pavel Ushakov from whose descendants the work comes.

Noch als Gasthörer der Kaiserlichen Kunstakademie in St. Petersburg wurde er vo n der Großfürstin Maria Nikolajewna als Zeichenlehrer ihrer Kinder eingesetzt. Er nahm seit 1865 an den Ausmalungen der Erlöser-Kathedrale in Moskau teil, wofür er 1892 den Orden der Hl. Anna des 3. G rades erhielt. MakarovsWerke befind en sich in der Staatlichen Tretjakow Galerie in Moskau, im Staatlichen Russischen Museum in St. Petersburg sowie in anderen Museen Russlands."Das Bildnis eines Kindes" ist ein hochqualitatives Beispiel Makarovs glänzender Kunst. Die Brustdarstellung in einer komplizieten Umdrehung ist der ovalen Form der Leinwand perfekt angepasst. Einige Besonderheiten der Darstallung lassen das Bildnis im Kontext Makarovs Arbeit an den Ausmalungen der Erlöser Kathedrale er-scheinen. Die Forschungsperspektive weist auf die hohe Platzierung des Werkes hin. Das lockige Kind ist eher geschlechtslos: Makarov stellt kein irdisches Kind dar, sondern mehr einen Engel, der den kostbaren eiförmige Schmuck mit dem Spruch band emporhebt.
