Walter Allen was a Birmingham-born writer, broadcaster and academic. He was about 3 years older than Eric Malthouse but they attended the same school and were friends thereafter. John Melville was about ten years older than both of them and moved to Birmingham in his youth. He was part of the same circle of friends as Walter Allen - a group of writers and artists in Birmingham in the 1930s and 1940s.
