James Malton Sold at Auction Prices

copperplate engraver, b. 1761 - d. 1803

James Malton (1761–1803) was an Irish engraver and watercolourist, who once taught geometry and perspective and worked as a draughtsman in the office of the celebrated Irish architect James Gandon.

The son of the English architectural draughtsman Thomas Malton the elder, he moved to Ireland with his father. He was employed as a draughtsman in the office of the architect James Gandon for nearly three years during the building of the Custom House, but was eventually dismissed. He is first recorded as an artist in 1790, when he sent two drawings to the Society of Artists in London from an address in Dublin.
Malton is best known for Picturesque and Descriptive View of the City of Dublin, a series of 25 prints originally published between 1792 and 1799. The plates were executed in etching and aquatint by Malton himself, after his own drawings. Each plate was accompanied by descriptive text with a dedication and a vignette in aquatint. Following the completion of the issue of the work in six parts, Malton republished the whole in a bound volume. The coloured prints from this work, which depict many of the new public buildings erected, capture the architectural metamorphosis Dublin underwent in the 18th century.
Between 1792 and 1803 Malton showed 51 drawings of architectural subjects at the Royal Academy. They included 17 views of Dublin in Indian ink and watercolour, mostly depicting the same subjects as his published prints. They were not, however, the original drawings from which the plates were made, often being larger, and with the scenes populated with different figures.
In 1798 he published An Essay on British Cottage Architecture, described in its subtitle as "an attempt to perpetuate on principle, that peculiar mode of building, which was originally the effect of chance". His later publications include a practical treatise on perspective calledThe Young Painter's Mahlstick (1800),four aquatints after drawings by Francis Keenan, issued as A Select Collection of Views in the County of Devon (1800) and A Collection of Designs for Rural Retreats as Villas Principally in the Gothic and Castle Styles of Architecture (1802).

Malton died in Norton Street, Marylebone, London, on 28 July 1803.

The plates are as follows: Great Courtyard, Dublin Castle; The Parliament House; Trinity College; College Library; Provost's House; St. Patrick's Cathedral; West Front of St. Patrick's Cathedral; Royal Exchange; Custom House; View of the Law Courts, looking up the Liffey; Tholsel; Old Soldiers Hospital, Kilmainham; Royal Infirmary, Phoenix Park; Blue Coat Hospital; Lying-in Hospital; Rotunda New Rooms; St. Catharine's Church; Marine School; Leinster House; Charlemont House; Powerscourt House; View of Capel Street, looking over Essex Bridge; St. Stephen's Green; Barracks; View of Dublin from the Magazine, Phoenix Park. Besides the above twenty-five views the bound volume contains the Arms of Dublin, as frontispiece; Survey of the City of Dublin as it stood in 1610, taken from Speed's Map; Survey of the Bay of Dublin, 1795, and a folding map of Dublin by Faden. At the end of the volume is a plate with two outline Keys - one of the smaller View of Dublin from the Park, the other of the smaller view of the Barracks. All the plates are inscribed James Malton del. et fecit James MaltonÕs A Picturesque and Descriptive View of the City of Dublin (1799) constitutes a significant artistic and historical document, reflecting the authorÕs profound admiration for the cityÕs architectural grandeur. In the preface, Malton expresses his desire to bring Dublin into the cultural spotlight, believing it to be a capital that had been unjustly neglected. His work, however, emerges from a context marked by both professional turmoil and personal ambition. ÒFew cities can boast more extensive conveniences, more eminent beauties, than DublinÉ To convey to the curious inquirer adequate ideas of those objects; to diffuse information of a Capital so long undesertly unnoticed, and to give it that place in estimation with regard to others it merits, this work was undertaken.Ó Preface, A Picturesque and Descriptive view of the City of Dublin, James Malton, 1799 Born in England in 1765, Malton was the son of Thomas Malton, a noted architectural draughtsman and instructor in geometry and perspective. The Malton family relocated to Dublin in 1769, where the elder Malton sought to establish himself within the cityÕs vibrant architectural scene. In 1781, through his fatherÕs connections, James Malton secured a position as a drawing clerk under the esteemed architect James Gandon, who was then overseeing the construction of the Custom House, one of the cityÕs most important public buildings. Despite initial praise from Gandon, MaltonÕs tenure was short-lived; he was dismissed due to what Gandon described as breaches of professional trust and misconduct. This dismissal later culminated in an anonymous and caustic critique of GandonÕs architectural designs, published in 1787Ña possible act of retaliation by Malton or his father. That same year, Malton failed in his candidacy for the position of Master of the Dublin SocietyÕs School of Architectural Drawing. Undeterred by these setbacks, Malton devoted himself to documenting the architecture of Dublin. By 1791, he had completed a comprehensive series of architectural drawings capturing the cityÕs most prominent buildings. These drawings vividly depicted DublinÕs Georgian streetscapes with great detail and accuracy. The engravings were issued in six instalments between 1792 and 1799, with the final bound volume published that same year, complete with descriptive text. MaltonÕs engravings are not merely technical records but are imbued with an artistic vision that animates the architecture of late eighteenth-century Dublin. His Picturesque and Descriptive View situates Dublin within the aesthetic discourses of the time, contributing to the visual and cultural representation of the city.

James Malton (1761-1803) Gateway to a Park (Hunting Lodge) Pen, Ink and Wash, 43 x 60cm (17 x 23½) Signed and dated 1795; inscribed twice with title verso and with label for 'J Leger & Son, Old Bond Street, London' This theatrical depiction of an entrance gateway is a bold statement by Malton who, in his prominent signature, categorises himself as “ARCHT” However the design owes much to Gandon’s proposed gateway to Emo Court (1780) which, in turn, interprets the style of William Chambers. The cresting, alluding to the Calydonian boar hunt, would not be out of place on a Transylvanian castle and the plumed dandy on horseback with a boy to open the gates, a wished for patron. Although architectural success eluded him Malton, here, leaves us with a neo-classical fantasy of great artistic merit.

JAMES MALTON (1761-1803)A set of twenty-five views of Dublin in hand coloured aquatints ''A Picturesque and Descriptive view of the City of Dublin''Frames 30 x 42.5cmJames Malton is thought to have lived in Dublin during the 1780s with his father Thomas Malton, an architectural draughtsman and teacher. According to the Publius source he was apprenticed to James Gandon, the famous architect, at the age of 17 in 1781. Malton's apprenticeship to Gandon was terminated after three years by mutual consent, after which he moved to London, working from there with frequent visits back to Dublin. Malton engaged on his grand project to produce his ''Picturesque Views of Dublin'', on a scale hitherto unknown even in London. Dublin pre-Act of Union in 1800 was of course an incredibly rich and vibrant city at the zenith of its financial and cultural powers, and so to Malton it must have appeared ripe for acceptance of such a publication to celebrate its status as the city second only to London. The book was published in six parts by subscription, as was the custom starting in 1792. The painting itself was carried out in London The book proved in part to be too great an undertaking for Malton, and he could not have foreseen the exodus which took place in the city after the Act of Union in 1800. He died in 1803 in London at the age of 38 of a brain fever, and undoubtedly did not reap the rewards of his endeavour.
