Robert Mangold Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1937 -

(b North Tonawanda, NY, 1937). American Painter. Robert Peter Mangold studied painting at the Cleveland Art Institute from 1956 – 1959. He received his MFA (1963) and BFA (1961) from Yale University. In the 1960’s, Mangold focused on the monochrome as his primary method of painting… Like Brice Marden and Robert Ryman, popular minimalists at the time, Mangold was also interested in the perceptual reception of the most elemental geometrical shapes: the circle, triangle and square by complex combination of color, line and shape. In the 1970’s Mangold began to explore the relationship between shape and line. He currently lives and works in Washingtonville, New York. In 1969 he won the Gugenheim Fellowship and has shown at the Whitney Biennial four times (1979, 1983, 1985, 2004). Parasol Press, New York, Druck bei Carol Sturm at NADJA, Kripplebush, New York. Woodcut on Kozo Japan. Signed and titled. Spot-mounted to underlying mat, free-standing in mat and framed under glass. - All in all very good. Very superb, clear impression with wide margin. - One of 250 copies. - Published by Parasol Press, New York, printed by Carol Sturm at NADJA, Kripplebush, New York. - From the portfolio "Seven Original Woodcuts Documentation". - Robert Mangold was known for the clarity and elegance of his forms. He often worked with circles, ellipses, rectangles or segments of shapes, which he placed in dialogue with each other. These reduced structures are complemented by fine lines that are applied to the coloured surfaces like drawings. Despite the rigour of his geometric language, Mangold's works never appear cold or mechanical - they radiate a subtle warmth and humanity that is enhanced by the slight irregularity of the lines and the muted colour palette.
