Marion Margaret Violet Manners, Duchess of Rutland (English, 1856-1937) Two Society Pencil Drawings, Mr. Renell Rodd and Mrs. Patrick Campbell, 14" x 11", the lady's portrait trimmed, Framed together-19" x 16", Note: Violet was privately educated as a young girl, and her family encouraged her interest in art. While she had no formal training as an artist, she did spend a significant period of time on a visit to Italy.[2] In 1877, she exhibited some of her drawings and sculptures at the Grosvenor Gallery, which was opened by her cousin Coutts Lindsay.[3][5] She considered herself to be a professional, but her rank and gender limited her; many considered her to be merely a dilettante.[2] Her most successful works centred on depicting members of her social circle. During her lifetime, Violet's works were on display at the main British art galleries such as the Royal Academy of Arts and the New Gallery, and also abroad in the US and France.[2][6] She exhibited her work at the Palace of Fine Arts at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois.[7] In 1925, one commentary opined that Violet's style "is particularly suited to the interpretation of feminine beauty and elegance, but she usually achieves considerable success in her delineations of men."[2]

She honed her gardening skills at her wedding gift, Sutton Courtenay Manor, Oxfordshire, creating a celebrated garden that influenced her lifelong friend, Vita-Sackville West. In 1924, after the collapse of her marriage, she embarked on a professional career as a garden designer. Her connections amongst the social elite led to many significant commissions and she influenced, advised and worked on a number of notable gardens including those at Blickling Hall, Cliveden and Hidcote Manor. A group of 4 monochrome watercolour and pencil menu card holders, circa 1880s, each with aperture for inserting a menu with a watercolour drawing of a young girl above, presumed to be her infant daughter Victoria Marjorie Manners (1883-1946), each with French caption and initial 'M' in pencil, 15 x 9 cm, together with a cabinet card of the Duchess of Rutland with her newborn daughter Violet, identified in ink beneath image and to verso, plus 4 envelopes for the menu cards, one with pencil identification of the artist to front panel, all slightly dust-soiled Though not a trained artist, Violet Manners had a career exhibiting both drawings and sculptures in various British galleries, and also abroad in the USA and France.
