James Bolivar Manson, English artist, Antique oil on panel painting “Vase with flowers”, signed, framed Size: 24 x 18 cm. size with frame: 37 x 31 cm wooden frame with plaster moldings Crack and plaster loss to lower corner of frame; several small chips to frame James Bolivar Manson (26 June 1879 in London – 3 July 1945 in London)[1] was an artist and worked at the Tate gallery for 25 years, including serving as its director from 1930 to 1938. In the Tate's own evaluation he was the "least successful" of their directors.[2] His time there was frustrated by his stymied ambition as a painter and he declined into alcoholism, culminating in a drunken outburst at an official dinner in Paris.[3] Although his art policies were more advanced than previously at the Tate and embraced Impressionism, he stopped short of accepting newer artistic movements like Surrealism and German Expressionism, thus earning the scorn of critics such as Douglas Cooper. He retired on the grounds of ill health and resumed his career as a flower painter until his death

    James Bolivar Manson (1879 - 1945) Ex Christie's

    Est: $2,800 - $4,500

James Bolivar Manson (1879 - 1945) painting titled "Moonlight & Snow". Oil on Canvas. Signed lower right. Christie's label verso. Sight Size: 15.75 x 19.5 in. Overall Size: 21.75 x 25.5 in. Manson studied first at Lambeth School of Art, and then, like many of his contemporaries, he travelled to Paris to study at the Acad?mie Julian. Whilst there Manson was inspired by the French Impressionists, whose influence is clearly evidenced in the strong light and pointillist depiction of the sea in Sparkling Sea, Cornwall. In 1920, the same year this was painted, he formed the Monarro Group with his close friend Lucien Pissarro, which aimed at promoting the Impressionist tradition in Britain - Claude Monet was appointed Honorary President. An influential figure in the British Art scene between the wars, Manson was Assistant Keeper of the Tate Gallery (1917-1930), before being appointed Director in 1930, a position he occupied until 1938.
