Sydney March Bronze Prince Edward on Horseback

This lot features a bronze statuette of The Duke of Windsor, Prince Edward VIII, mounted on horseback. Sydney March (British 18761968). March was a prolific artist, whose primary focus was portrait busts and other sculptures of British royalty and contemporary figures, as well as war memorials. One of eight artists in his family, he and his siblings completed the National War Memorial of Canada after the death of their brother Vernon March in 1930. Son of George Henry March and his wife Elizabeth Blenkin, Sydney was born in 1876 in Stoneferry, a suburb of Kingston upon Hull, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. At the time of the 1891 census, Sydney worked as a monumental sculptor's apprentice. By 1901, the family had moved to Battersea, London, where his father was employed as a builder's clerk. Sydney studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He was the second of nine children, eight of whom became artists. Sydney and his siblings established studios at the family home of Goddendene in Locksbottom, Farnborough after 1901. The seven acre grounds had not only three large studios, but also a metal foundry. The studio walls could be slid back, such that the artists could work in natural daylight. Sydney March died at age 92 in the second quarter of 1968 in the county of Kent, England. Most of the members of the March family, including parents George and Elizabeth, are interred at Saint Giles the Abbot Churchyard in Farnborough, Kent, England. Sydney's ashes were buried in the family plot on 22 June 1968. Siged "Sydney March" on the rear right of the bronze base. Mounted on a piece of black marble, marble is chipped on one corner. Excellent condition. Measures 12.875" x 12" (back of base to nose) x 4.875", marble base alone measures 9.25" x 4.875" x 1.25". This piece comes from the Walker Estate of Dayton, TN. ORPHEUS DESCENDING INTO HADES measurements note bronze: 50.5cm., 19 7/8 in. base: 7 by 20 by 15cm., 2¾ by 8 by 6in. signed and dated: Sydney March Sc 1903 KENT with the family foundry stamp H[?] BRON[ZE] bronze, dark brown patina, on a veined dark red marble plinth NOTE Orpheus is depicted here reclaiming his wife Eurydice from Hades through the power of his music. The story of Orpheus was a popular one throughout the Romantic age in British art because of its mixture of magic and tragedy. It was treated in painting by both Watts and Leighton and symbolises not just the triumph of love, but also the triumph of art over death. The Orpheus is one of March's rare 'ideal' works. The bronze shown at the Royal Academy in 1903 (no.1743) was sold recently from the Forbes collection by Christie's (ex Fine Art Society). The present cast is distinguished by its fuller inscription and presence of a foundry stamp, locating it in Kent where the March family (especially Sydney's brothers Walter and Dudley) ran their own foundry. The March family's greatest collaborative work is the Canadian National War Memorial in Ottawa (1939). Signed Sydney March White marble 75 cm (29 1/2 in) Sydney March was the second son from a family of seven brothers and two sisters all artistically gifted in different ways. In 1902 the family started a studio at Goddendene, Kent where each member brought his or her speciality to a unique private foundry; Walter (1888-1954) supervised technicalities of casting and carving, Dudley (1885-1962) finished off the patination on bronzes, while Sydney, Vernon (1891-1930) and Elsie (1883-1974) were the main sculptors. The March family's greatest collaborative work is the Canadian National War Memorial in Ottawa, unveiled by George V in 1939. The majority of Sydney's independent works are portraits and war memorials, while his "ideal" works are relatively rare - his impressive bronze Orpheus Descending into Hades (1903) is in the Forbes collection. A Nymph caught in a Wave is doubly rare as a large marble "ideal" composition. The choice of subject relates to several studies by Elsie sold in a studio sale (see this sale lot 133). It has also been called "Spirit of the New".
