Gerhard Marcks (Berlin 1889 - 1981 Burgbrohl) was a German sculptor, graphic artist and art educator of the modern era. Born on February 18, 1889 in Berlin, apprenticed to a stonemason from 1903 to 1907, studied from 1907 to 1910 at the Grand Ducal Saxon Academy of Fine Arts in Weimar under Christian Thomsen (prize awarded in 1911), worked in Danzig from 1911 to 1914, served in the military from 1914 to 1918, professor at the Burg Giebichenstein School of Applied Arts in Halle from 1918 to 1925, co-founded the Free Group Halle with Karl Peter Röhl in 1921, head of the sculpture class at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin from 1925 to 1930, dismissed by the Nazis in 1933, exiled in Ekenforde from 1938, and worked as a freelance artist in Burgbrohl from 1946. Marcks created animal sculptures ("The She-Wolf," "Horse"), portraits, reliefs, and woodcuts with archaic monumentality, clear surfaces, and Cubist forms, influenced by Aristide Maillol, Georg Kolbe, and medieval sculpture; figurative works with spiritual depth and organic reduction.

Auf einer rechteckigen Plinthe Stehende mit einem Tuch um die Hüften und angewinkeltem, rechten Arm. Dem Pathos und der Monumentalität während des "Dritten Reichs" stellte Marcks nach 1945 seine eigene Ästhetik entgegen, indem er schlanke, zarte Menschen abbildete, die teilweise von archaischen griechischen Skulpturen und Kouroi inspiriert waren. Auch in dieser Plastik aus dem reifen Spätwerk kommt durch die Proportionen, die Haltung und dem selbstvergessenen Blick eine überzeitlich gültige, stille Verhaltenheit zum Ausdruck. Ges.-H. 51 cm. A year later he went to Dessau. From 1925 in Giebichenstein, he took over the directorship of the local School of Applied Arts three years later. His further path led him to Hamburg and Cologne. The work of the sculptor Marcks is honored today by its own museum in Bremen.

In a deliberate departure from the avant-garde movements of his time, he developed an independent sculptural language oriented towards classical ideals of scale, proportion and humanity. His works gained international recognition particularly after 1945 and were exhibited at the documenta, amongst other venues. Characteristic of his work is a reduced, clear formal language with a calm, self-contained aura. The bronze ‘Girl with a Large Cloth’, the design for which dates back to 1936, depicts a standing female figure of slender, balanced proportions. The composition is organised vertically and achieves a calm balance through the figure’s posture: she holds the scarf out to the sides with both hands, causing the form to unfold on both sides and creating a balanced, self-contained effect. The scarf forms a kind of frame around the body, stabilising the overall composition. The surface is finely modulated and aims to create a nuanced interplay of light and shadow. The golden-brown patina emphasises the figure’s warm, material presence. The sculpture’s impact rests on the figure’s clear, balanced posture. The slightly bowed head and restrained gestures create a quiet, contemplative effect. The drapery acts as a formal counterweight whilst simultaneously emphasising the lines of the body. The sculpture moves between an idealised figure and an individual appearance, without settling on either definitively. Within Marck’s oeuvre, the work exemplifies his engagement with the standing figure, a theme he explored in various ways over the course of decades. His works—portraits, figures, nudes, and animal representations—stand as exemplary achievements of a sculptural language that, after the Second World War, translated classical tradition into a new and contemporary form. Born in Berlin in 1889, Gerhard Marcks began producing animal studies at the Berlin Zoological Garden at an early age before turning to sculpture in 1907. Sharing a studio with Richard Scheibe, he deepened his artistic practice, while also receiving important impulses from August Gaul and Georg Kolbe. After military service in Flanders, Marcks began teaching at the School of Applied Arts in Berlin in 1918. In 1919, he was appointed to the Bauhaus in Weimar, where he directed the pottery workshop in Dornburg, before becoming professor at the School of Applied Arts at Burg Giebichenstein in Halle an der Saale in 1925. Following the National Socialist seizure of power, Marcks was dismissed from his position in 1933, and his works were classified as “degenerate.” After the Second World War, the artist taught in Hamburg from 1946 to 1950 and subsequently lived and worked independently in Cologne, where he created important memorials and commemorative monuments for public spaces. Figure and Nude Between Tradition and Avant-Garde Soon after the end of the war, a renewed flourishing of sculpture emerged in Germany, reconnecting with the expressively stylized figuration of the prewar period in an effort to render visible cultural and ethical values thought to have been lost and to give them form through the human figure. This is equally true of Gerhard Marcks, whose sculptural vision was shaped by a profound faith in the dignity and integrity of the human being. Decisive inspiration came from his travels to Italy and Greece in 1927–28, where he was deeply impressed by the proportion, calmness, and formal unity of ancient sculpture. Marcks’s figures are neither heroically elevated nor conceived as portraits. Rather, they function as universal archetypes in which the human form becomes the bearer of humanity and timeless order. Freya Created in 1949, the life-sized bronze Freya presents a standing female nude of restrained yet graceful presence. The balanced contrapposto and the casually hip-resting arm lend the figure a natural sense of movement, while the downcast eyes convey quiet introspection and meditative composure. We would like to thank Bildgießerei Richard Barth, Rinteln, for their kind information. After an extended hiatus, Gerhard Marcks once again turned to the motif of the reclining female figure in 1964. He had already occupied himself with related models for a version in stone in the early 1940s, but that work was destroyed during the Second World War. An echo of these early explorations can still be found in the “Liegendes Mädchen” from 1948. With the 1964 “Liegende” that is up for auction here, Marcks arrived at an independent, formally and compositionally reconceived solution by combining aspects of a reclining and rising figure in a fascinating manner: she is lying on her side and leaning on her left forearm, which is crossed by her right arm in a relaxed pose. This crossing of her arms raises her torso in a slightly rotated position. Her bent legs and the softly flowing forms of her body invest the composition with an inner movement situated between rest and latent dynamism. The rectangular plinth is modelled in the form of a spread-out section of drapery and takes on a central compositional function: its folds converge in lines radiating out from beneath her hip, marking both the body’s centre of gravity and the middle of the plinth. Together with the bronze sculpture “Schwangere Najade”, which was created the same year, the “Liegende” prepared the way for the large, reclining “Aegina” installed in Bremen’s “Wallanlagen” park. The bronze sculpture offered here is among the rarest works in Gerhard Marcks’s oeuvre. Besides the present casting – Cast A, the first realisation of the figure – there is only one other known cast which is to be found in the Gerhard-Marcks-Haus in Bremen (cast 1/8. No further copies were cast so far).
