Margold, dated 19, inscribed Das Plakat September Sonder Heft 1920 Die Packung, Verlag "Das Plakat" Charlottenburg 2 ESTIMATE € 500 - 1000 STARTING PRICE € 500 The architect, designer, decorative and graphic artist Emanuel Josef Margold was trained as a carpenter at the technical school for woodworking in Königsberg an der Eger. He then studied at the Mainz School of Applied Arts with Anton Huber and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in the master school for architecture with Josef Hoffmann. In 1908-10, he carried out construction contracts in Bohemia and Austria. He then became Hoffmann's assistant in the master class and an employee at the Wiener Werkstätte (WW). Margold took part in numerous ideas competitions while still a student. The Darmstadt publisher Alexander Koch became aware of him and published Margold's designs in various magazines from 1907 onwards. In May 1911, Margold was appointed to the Darmstadt artists' colony and set up a studio in the Ernst-Ludwig-Haus. He made numerous designs for all areas of arts and crafts such as jewellery, porcelain, glass, fabrics and wallpaper. Several living quarters and offices are also documented from this period. His tin biscuit tins for the biscuit manufacturer Bahlsen in Hanover (1912 – 1918) became well-known. The later Bauhaus artist Herbert Bayer and husband of the photographer Irene Bayer, née Hecht, was studying with Margold in Darmstadt at the time. In Darmstadt, Margold also furnished August Wilk’s lamp shop and designed tombstones in the Expressionist style. In 1929, Margold moved to Berlin, where he designed several residential buildings in the New Building style (Neues Bauen). In 1938, he was appointed professor at the School of Applied Arts in Bratislava. Editor of „Bauten der Volkserziehung und Volksgesundheit“, Pollak, Berlin-Charlottenburg 1931. The two boxes have slightly curved lids and are differently formed: both are rectangular, whereas one of them displays a slightly curved longitudinal side. They both feature stylised, floral decors that are predominantly golden but otherwise draw on only few colours. The boxes are in very good, age-related condition with only minor surface traces. They each display a relief embossing in seven lines on the underside, “H-BAHLSENS, KEKS-FABRIK HANNOVER, KÖNIGL-PREUSS- STAATSMEDAILLE, WELTAUSSTELLUNGEN, 1904-1910-GROSSER PREIS-1911-1913, BALTISCHE AUSSTELLUNG MALMO 1914, DIE KÖNIGL-MEDAILLE“. The dimensions (width x depth x height) are 4 x 17.5 x 8.2 cm (rectangular) and 4.2 x 15.7 x 10 cm (rounded) Emanuel Josef Margold (1889-1962) After studying architecture at the academy in Vienna and working as an independent architect, Emanuel Josef Margold joined the Wiener Werkstätte in 1909, where he worked closely with Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956). In 1911, he settled in Darmstadt and became a member of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony. Margold became famous for his corporate designs for the food company Hermann Bahlsen in Hannover. This collaboration began in 1912 and probably lasted until the end of the First World War. His innovative style was strongly influenced by Josef Hoffmann and the Viennese School and served the Art Nouveau industry as an exemplary repertoire of forms until the 1930s. The Bahlsen biscuit factory won numerous awards for its boxes designed by Margold. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

EMANUEL JOSEF MARGOLD (1888-1962) RUDOLFINUM / AUSSTELLUNG DES VEREINES DEUTSCHER BILDENDER KÜNSTLER IN BÖHMEN. 1907. 41 3/4x31 1/2 inches, 106x80 cm. Albert Berger, Vienna. Condition B+: tears, creases and abrasions in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds; light time-staining along seam. Two-sheets. Paper. Margold was an interdisciplinary artist in the truest sense among the Weiner Werkstatte greats. Schooled as a woodworker in Bohemia and at the School of Applied Arts in Mainz, he went on to become a student of Josef Hoffmann at Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, later becoming Hoffmann's assistant and joining the Wiener Werkstatte. Though Margold's name and work have not resonated nearly as much as some of his peers, his textile, ceramic, jewelry and graphic designs all bear the powerful and attractive hallmarks of the best Werkstatte designs, many with a strong resemblance to the work of Hoffmann himself. He also did work with product packaging and interior design. In 1911, Margold left Vienna for the Darmstadt Artists' Colony. Although printed in Vienna, this poster advertises an exhibition in Prague of German artists. rare.
