        Berta O'Hare Margoulies (Polish/American, 1907-1996) mid-century carved stone sculpture depicting a woman wearing a hooded cloak, kneeling and embracing a child. Signed and dated '57 to the lower back edge. 20" H x 8 1/2" W x 8 1/4" D. 60.20 lbs. 20th century. Provenance: Private Southern collection. Biography: Berta O'Hare Margoulies (Polish/American, 1907-1996) was born in Poland and emigrated with her parents to the United States via Belgium, Holland and England during WWI. She graduated from Hunter College in 1927. She subsequently studied at the Art Students League with Edward McCartan, and in 1928 won a Gardner Foundation Award to study in Paris. She enrolled at the Academie Colarossi and Academie Julian in Paris and briefly attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts. She returned to the United States in 1931 and participated in the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) program throughout the 1930's and 1940's. She won the Avery Award from the Architectural League in 1937 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1946. Additionally, Margoulies became a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, New York City in 1944. Her works have been exhibited at Art Institute in Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and the Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey. During the First World War her Polish-Jewish family emigrated to Belgium, which was followed by Holland and England, where Margoulies was able to study at the Howard School in Simsbury Park. She finally finished her studies in Paris, where she attended prestigious universities, including the Académie Colarossi, the Academie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts.         BERTA MARGOULIES O'HARE Nude with Raised Arms. Carved stone. 318 mm; 12 1/2 inches (height, excluding base). With the artist's incised signature, lower side of sculpture. Polish-born Berta Margoulies O'Hare (1907-1996) immigrated to the United States during World War I and studied at the Art Students League in New York. She became friends with William and Marguerite Zorach in the 1930s and spent summers working with them in Maine. While working for the WPA she met her husband, Eugene O'Hare, an inventor and author of the Special Skill section of the New Deal.
