Herman Maril (1908-1986) Sentinels Third to early last quarter of the 20th century. The appealing composition arranged with simplified forms in unique and pleasing colors is signed lower right front. The title is provided by a previous auction listing found online from Bruchard Galleries in St. Petersburg, Florida December 2023. The listing also mentions a label from Birmingham Gallery Michigan. Art historian David A Scott, former director of the National Collection of Fine Arts and the Corcoran Gallery, says of Maril: ''His early experiment with cubist devices gave him the ability to deal with landscape forms selectively and analytically. Building on this, after the war, he developed an increasingly personal style, expressed in.arrestingly simple, evocative oils. What meets the eye in his work is delightful but we realize the apparent simplicity is deceptive. The process of simplifying, a thoughtful and intuitive elimination of detail is important. Starting in his later painting with a motif in nature that moved him, Maril broadened the statement, simplified space and form, reconciled them to the picture plane, eliminated distracting elements and tensions, and achieved a harmony that focuses and enhances pictorial energy. The result, in his most successful work, conveys a deep sense of peace and harmony.'' Maril's work today is included in over 60 museums, including the Baltimore Museum, Bronk Collection at Adirondack College, Butler Institute of American Art, Cape Museum of Fine Arts, Cleveland Museum, and Corcoran Gallery. Note: Maril was born in Baltimore in 1908 and began painting as a teenager. He was active in New York as a young man in the 1930s, participating in the New York avant-garde scene. After World War II, Maril painted primarily in Baltimore and Cape Cod. The year 1934 was pivotal for Maril—that summer he visited Cape Cod and was entranced by the sand dunes, expansive skies and quaint fishing boats. In time, he and his wife purchased a derelict post office in Provincetown where they would spend summers. Every autumn, Maril returned to Baltimore. Throughout his life, Maril was a prominent member of the Maryland regional art community, serving on the Board of Trustees of the Baltimore Museum of Art and working as an instructor of painting, drawing and watercolor at the University of Maryland, College Park from 1946 until his death in 1986. He had an amazing 60-year career of painting and teaching, and his work is featured in numerous premiere art collections around the country, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the National Academy of Design, all in New York, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art and The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. Two pieces of newspaper with artist obituary and picture dated 9/8/86 attached to back. Depicts abstract image of a seashore with rough waves and a dock and boathouse in background. Depth: 3/4 in. Overall size: 36 X 28 in. Sight size: 33 1/2 X 26 in. #1531 . Herman Maril was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1908. He received his early training at the Maryland Institute of Fine Arts. He was discovered by Duncan Philips in the early 1930s, which led to him being commissioned for painting by the WPA artists program during the Depression. After serving in the Army in World War II he married his wife Esta and returned to Baltimore, where he lived the rest of his life. He taught at the University of Maryland for over 30 years, becoming an Emeritus professor and receiving an honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts from them. His work is in numerous collections including the Metropolitan in New York, the National Museum of American Art in Washington D.C., and numerous museums in Baltimore. Remembered as an American Regionalist painter famous for landscapes and shore scenes, he created paintings that emphasize clarity and simplicity, and were created with broad, flat, color masses in a style related to Cubism. He passed away suddenly in September 1986 due to pneumonia in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Location BE
