Published for the first time by Francesca Baldassari, the work depicts the painter in half-length, turned toward the viewer, holding a brush and palette as explicit attributes of his professional identity. The composition fits organically within the tradition of late seventeenth-century Florentine portraiture, finding its closest counterpart in the self-portrait preserved in the Gallerie degli Uffizi, from which it adopts and reworks the structural layout: the figure emerges from a dark background through a carefully calibrated illumination concentrated on the face and the whiteness of the shirt, creating a highly effective chiaroscuro contrast that isolates the subject and enhances its volumetric presence. The sitter’s inner character is conveyed through a repertoire of restrained expressive intensity — the incisiveness of the direct, self-aware gaze, the slightly parted lips, and the suspended gesture of the right hand — which together produce a pose animated by persuasive immediacy, not far, in its introspective tension, from the self-portrait of Ludovico Cardi Cigoli, which entered the Uffizi in 1682 with the collection of Leopoldo de’ Medici. From a physiognomic standpoint, the painting belongs to a late phase of the artist’s career: comparison with the self-portrait dated 1709 in the Uffizi reveals differences in the rendering of facial features that suggest either a different chronological placement or a typological variant within the artist’s late production, a factor that has led scholars to maintain reservations regarding its identification. Historical documentation attests to the existence of multiple autograph self-portraits: Filippo Baldinucci mentions an example “of strong manner and bold brushwork,” passed down to the heirs and later in the possession of his son Francesco Saverio, while another record refers to the exhibition of a self-portrait in the cloister of the Santissima Annunziata during the feast of Saint Luke in 1705; the absence of ownership details in the relevant catalogue renders the provenance uncertain, although identification with the painting recorded in 1724 as “Portrait of Signor Onorio Marinari by his own hand of the Chancellor Sigismondo, his son” (Nota de’ quadri, 1724) cannot be excluded. Trained in the circle of Carlo Dolci, Marinari developed a pictorial language of refined sensibility that encompasses major sacred commissions for Florence’s principal religious institutions as well as private commissions — portraits and small-scale devotional works — in which his distinctive capacity for psychological analysis fully emerges. The present self-portrait stands as an exceptional testimony to this quality, combining solid formal construction with a penetrating exploration of character.. 58 x 72,50 cm.

JUDITH UND HOLOFERNES Öl auf Leinwand, auf Platte. 118 x 88 cm. Verso mit verschiedenen Vermerken und Etiketten. In reliefverziertem und vergoldetem Rahmen. Beigegeben eine Expertise von Pierluigi Carofano, Pisa, 10. Oktober 2025, der das vorliegende Werk Onorio Marinari zuschreibt, in Kopie. Vor abgedunkeltem Fond die Bettstatt des Holofernes, auf der diesem der Kopf vom Rumpf separiert wird. Judith führt das elegant verzierte Schwert mit dem vergoldeten Knauf. Die elegante Spitze ihres Untergewandes und das purpurne Obergewand stehen in Kontrast zur Kleidung ihrer Begleiterin. Die Tötung des Holofernes wird im Buch Judith des Alten Testaments berichtet (Jdt 10 – 13). Nach etlichem Brandschatzen und Morden im gesamten Vorderen Orient gelangt Holofernes nach Betulia, wo es Judith gelingt, ihn und sein Gefolge in ein Gelage zu verwickeln. Sie und ihre Magd nutzen seine Trunkenheit aus und enthaupten ihn. Gemäß den aus New Orleans und London überlieferten Informationen wurde das Gemälde im April 2003 von Dr. Sandro Bellesi anhand einer Fotografie untersucht und die Zuschreibung an den genannten Künstler vorgeschlagen. Set within a sculpted oval frame, the tender composition features the youthful Madonna and Child gazing directly at the viewer-an intimate and engaging motif that the artist replicated multiple times with variations in colour and lighting. A notable example of this theme was sold at Christie's, London (26 November - 17 December 2020, lot 210) for £50,000.Unlike the version sold at Christie's, the present work is distinguished by a luminous, almost lunar light that contrasts strikingly with deeper shadowed tones, evoking the influence of the artist's master and cousin, Carlo Dolci (1616-1686). Following Dolci's death in 1686, Onorio assumed an increasingly prominent role at the Medici court, producing a significant body of work. Remarkably, he remained active well into old age, as evidenced by the frescoes he executed in the Palazzo Capponi during his eighties.We are grateful to Francesca Baldassari for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs.

L'opera dimostra come Onorio seppe recepire la lezione di Carlo Dolci e tradurla in un linguaggio meno aulico e più mondano, sicuramente intellettualmente più versatile. Una versione identica è conservata presso gli Uffizi di Firenze, già attribuita a Lorenzo Lippi. Figlio del pittore Sigismondo Marinari, Onorio Marinari fu allievo del cugino Carlo Dolci, del quale guidò la bottega per qualche tempo dopo la morte del maestro. Esercitò inoltre la sua attività di pittore a Firenze, dove fu anche un brillante astronomo. The artwork shows how Honorius was able to take up Carlo Dolci's lesson and translate it into a less courtly and more worldly language, certainly intellectually more versatile. An identical version is preserved in the Uffizi in Florence, already attributed to Lorenzo Lippi.

(Firenze, 1627 - 1715) Santa Caterina d'Alessandria Olio su tela, cm 88X73,5 Dipinti di figure a mezzo busto, dal morbido chiaroscuro e dall'incarnato diafano, sono una tipologia illustrativa peculiare della pittura fiorentina seicentesca. Il dipinto in esame, infatti, si riconosce a Onorio Marinari, che allievo di Carlo Dolci e interprete della sua verve devozionale, ne muta l'indirizzo estetico esprimendo una visione più libera e mondana del proprio fare pittorico. Come prova il confronto con le opere di certa autografia, quale ad esempio la Salomé del Museo di Belle Arti di Budapest, l'esemplare in esame si attesta di buona qualità e sia pur simile dal punto di vista compositivo ne è indipendente rispetto la realizzazione disegnativa. Rimane nondimeno indubbio che l'immagine beneficiò di una straordinaria fortuna e le fonti storiche e archivistiche ne documentano molteplici versioni. Tornando al rapporto con il Dolci, appare evidente che il Marinari opta per una superficie meno smaltata, una materia pastosa dalla vivacità barocca e ricca di effetti chiaroscurali, esibendo le suggestioni desunte dal Furini e dal Volterrano.

(Florence 1621–1716) The Death of Cleopatra, oil on canvas, 119.5 x 95 cm, unframed Provenance: Private European collection, since the 1980s We are grateful to Silvia Benassai for endorsing the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a photograph. The present painting depicts the dramatic suicide of Cleopatra by a venomous snakebite. The composition focuses on the Ptolemaic queen, showing her half-length and embellishing the richness of her robes and jewellery. Onofrio Marinari executed another painting with the same subject, now in the Longhi Foundation in Florence (S. Benassai, Onorio Marinari. Pittore a Firenze degli ultimi Medici, Florence 2011, p. 146, cat. no. 73). The latter, also half-length, differs from the work presented her only in the gestures and the position of Cleopatra’s face. Both paintings show the same pathos and vivid colours of the clothing. Both works can be dated to the 1680s. Son of the painter Gismondo Marinari and Maddalena Guinterini, Onorio Marinari was born in Florence. After an early training in his father's workshop, the artist was introduced to the prestigious workshop of his friend and relative Carlo Dolci, where he soon attained a prominent position. Often considered Dolci’s most skillful pupil, Marinari was influenced by his master’s compositions and style throughout his career.

Onorio was a pupil of Carlo Dolci (1616–1686), whose emotional style and color scheme he adopted in his work. Mary is depicted with her head bowed and a blue mantle draped over her head. A golden halo surrounds her head. The artist stylized the forms so that the veiled head appears almost circular and matches the round halo. The gold of the nimbus is reflected in the color of Maria's shirt. Mary's facial features are of youthful beauty, her downcast eyes showing her humility. She is apparently depicted at the moment when the Archangel Gabriel announces to her the virgin birth of Christ and she declares herself a servant of God (ancilla Dei). The head of Mary is inspired by the famous compositions of Carlo Dolci, Mater Dolorosa and Madonna of the Annunciation (Louvre, Paris). In both cases, Dolci shows Maria's hands, which Onorio Marinari has abandoned to concentrate fully on the face framed by the blue cloak. 46 × 38 cm, Oil on canvas

Onorio was a pupil of Carlo Dolci (1616–1686), whose emotional style and color scheme he adopted in his work. Mary is depicted with her head bowed and a blue mantle draped over her head. A golden halo surrounds her head. The artist stylized the forms so that the veiled head appears almost circular and matches the round halo. The gold of the nimbus is reflected in the color of Maria's shirt. Mary's facial features are of youthful beauty, her downcast eyes showing her humility. She is apparently depicted at the moment when the Archangel Gabriel announces to her the virgin birth of Christ and she declares herself a servant of God (ancilla Dei). The head of Mary is inspired by the famous compositions of Carlo Dolci, Mater Dolorosa and Madonna of the Annunciation (Louvre, Paris). In both cases, Dolci shows Maria's hands, which Onorio Marinari has abandoned to concentrate fully on the face framed by the blue cloak.

Wie Sandro Bellesi in seiner ausführlichen Expertise darlegt, ist hier in einem dunklen Raum das Brustbild eines Kindes mit schönen regelmäßigen Gesichtszügen, blonden Locken und einem weißen Kleid dargestellt. Die große Aufmerksamkeit, die der Künstler im Vergleich zu dem skizzenhaften Kleidungsstück dem feinen Gesicht hat zukommen lassen, legt nahe, dass es sich um eine Darstellung nach einem lebenden Modell handelt. Anhand des angedeuteten Schilfstocks im Vordergrund schlägt Bellesi eine Identifizierung des Knaben als Darstellung des jungen Johannes des Täufers vor und ordnet das Werk auf Basis des charakteristischen Stils und der typologischen Besonderheit der Figur dem Künstler Onorio Marinari zu.

The Florentine painter Onorio Marinari came from a family of artists and first studied with his father Sigismondo Marinari, then with his cousin Carlo Dolci, whose style he developed further. Strongly indebted to the Tuscan tradition, but especially to the rich art historical heritage of Florence, Marinari's paintings are characterized by a sense of naturalism and a certain sentimentality of the figures, as well as by an attentive rendering of details, which can also be observed in the present work. The penitent Mary Magdalene is depicted with a more dreamy than imploring gaze, and holds her head supported in her left hand in a gesture traditionally associated with Melancholia, which is described by Vasari as the typical state of mind of the artist. Marinari combines this subject with the memento mori and vanitas motifs popular in the Baroque period, represented by the carefully rendered skull on which the saint's right hand rests. In this melancholic musing on the emptiness and transience of earthly existence, the previously so worldly Mary Magdalene finds her faith. With this original chiastic link, Marinari is able to summarise the complex religious context and to illuminate it in a new way for the viewer.
