Vive la 'France' - Mort aux Boches Published in Les mots en liberté futuristes (Milan, 1919). "A Tumultuous Assembly: Numerical Sensibility is an example of tavole parolibere (free-word pictures). In this print, the subject of which is Italy's victory in World War I, Marinetti drew from visual collage and parole in libertà (words-in-freedom) and eschewed regulations of grammar and syntax to create a work that can be interpreted both visually and aurally. A Tumultuous Assembly: Numerical Sensibility liberates numbers, signs, letters, and images from their functional responsibilities, exaggerates forms, and juxtaposes diverse elements, thereby producing unexpected associations. The Futurists celebrated the potential of war, drawing analogies between weaponry, such as torpedoes and bombs, and Futurist poetry. Here, Marinetti combined innovative typography, found elements (such as the image of the drummer boy on the left and the strips of letters and numbers throughout the composition), and dramatic variations in scale to create a dynamic composition representing a celebrating crowd" (www.metmuseum.org). Letterpress/ cliché, 1919, 30x39 cm. (leaf), printed in red on yellow paper. Stamp 'PROVA' in the lower margin

          MARINETTI FILIPPO TOMMASO: (1876-1944)

          Est: €1,500 - €2,000

MARINETTI FILIPPO TOMMASO: (1876-1944) Italian poet and art theorist, founder of the Futurist movement, best known as the author of the first Futurist Manifesto (1909) and as a co-author of the Fascist Manifesto (1919). A fine L.S., F T Marinetti, three pages, large 4to, Milan, n.d. (annotated 1912 in pencil in an unidentified hand), to Gustave Kahn ('Mon tres cher Gustave') on the attractive red printed stationery of Movimento Futuristai, in French. Marinetti states that he is delighted to learn that his correspondent's wife has recovered, although remarks 'Quant a vous, il est probable que vous ayez repris, en desobeissant a Mme. Kahn, vos vilaines habitudes de fumeur enrage! Est-ce exact?' (Translation: 'As for you, it is likely that you have resumed, by disobeying Mrs. Kahn, your ugly habits of rabid smoking! Is it correct?'), adding that he often talks of Kahn and declaims his Au jour fermant to his friends, the futuristic painters. Marinetti also informs his friend that he has already sent him a copy of Monoplan du Pape ('The Pope's Aeroplane'), and will send a second if the first is lost ('Comment avez-vous pu supposer un oubli de ma part?') (Translation: 'How could you suppose an oversight on my part?), further observing 'Mon livre, qui est je crois mon meilleur, vous plaira d'un cote: caricature epique de la papaute et du christianisme, mais vous deplaira de l'autre: exaltation de la guerre' (Translation: 'My book, which I believe is my best, will please you on the one hand: an epic caricature of the papacy and Christianity, but will displease you on the other: an exaltation of war') and asking Kahn to write to him when he has completely read it, 'Je tiens à savoir exactement votre jugement' (Translation: 'I want to know exactly your judgement'). A letter of good content and excellent association. A few very small, extremely minor holes to the final page, close to, but not affecting, the signature. VG Guatave Kahn (1859-1936) French Symbolist poet and art critic, a primary influence on Marinetti. Le Monoplan du Pape was a highly anti-Roman Catholic and anti-Austrian verse novel published by Marinetti in 1912.

[FINE ARTS: 20TH & 21ST CENTURY PART II] FILIPPO TOMMASO MARINETTI (1876-1944). UNE ASSEMBLÉE TUMULTUEUSE (SENSIBILITÉ NUMÉRIQUE)

          Est: €500 - €1,000

Letterpress and cliché print, leaf size 32 x 39 cm (leaf), printed in black on bright yellow paper w. stamp "prova" in black verso. With central vertical fold; a bit creased in margins, but a very good copy. Eventually published in Let mots en liberté futuristes (Milan, 1919). 'A Tumultuous Assembly: Numerical Sensibility' is an example of tavole parolibere (free-word pictures). In this print, the subject of which is Italy’s victory in World War I, Marinetti drew from a visual collage and parole in libertà (words-in-freedom) and eschewed regulations of grammar and syntax to create a work that can be interpreted both visually and aurally. The work liberates numbers, signs, letters, and images from their functional responsibilities, exaggerates forms, and juxtaposes diverse elements, thereby producing unexpected associations. The Futurists celebrated the potential of war, drawing analogies between weaponry, such as torpedoes and bombs, and Futurist poetry. Here, Marinetti combined innovative typography, found elements (such as the image of the drummer boy on the left and the strips of letters and numbers throughout the composition), and dramatic variations in scale to create a dynamic composition representing a celebrating crowd'. FILIPPO TOMMASO MARINETTI Une assemblée tumultueuse (Sensibilité numérique). Letterpress printed in red on yellowish light tan paper, 1919. 311x387mm; 12 1/4x15 1/4 inches (sheet), full margins. Published in Les Mots en Liberté Futuristes, Milan. The tenets of Marinetti's (1876-1944) "Typographic Revolution" (1913) are visually set forth in his typographic masterpiece, Les Mots en Liberté Futuristes (The Futurist Words in Freedom). The book, considered the peak of Marinetti's typographic experimentation, contains a creative variety of hand-designed typefaces, calligraphy and dynamic layouts. In this print, Marinetti depicts Italy's victory in World War I, using tavole parolibere (free-word pictures), a form of Futurist wordplay in which numbers, letters and signs are liberated from their functionality to create compelling visual compositions.

ARTIST: FILIPPO TOMMASO MARINETTI (1876-1944) SIZE: Each: 12 1/4 x 15 3/8 in./31 x 39 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: Filippo Marinetti was an Italian ideologue, poet, editor, and founder of the Futurist movement of the early twentieth century. Marinetti, most noted for his authorship of the “Futurist Manifesto”—first published in the Paris newspaper Le Figaro—also published this important Futurist touchstone, “Les Mots en Liberté Futuristes.” The plates were inserted and folded several times in order to make them fit into the small book, and the images display the typographic method fervently espoused by that particular movement. “The postwar years gave new impetus to the spread of modernist aesthetics to the more popular artistic mediums... Marinetti sought to give visual expression to the anarchic energy of war, the big city, and the rioting crowd... Setting out to destroy all literary and typographic rules, Marinetti called for the abolition of punctuation, the adverb, and the adjective to break down completely the traditional continuity and order of writing. The Futurists also had a particular interest in the medium of print, not just as a vehicle for their poetry but for the purpose of proselytizing their ideas on subjects touching all aspects of life—from sculpture to lust. Although they produced almost no typographically advanced posters, the revolution the Futurists initiated in typography proved fundamental. Through their influence on Dada and the Russian avant-garde they contributed to the development of the new typography in the 1920s” (Modern Poster, p. 20-21). This lot includes four proofs for two plates of the book. (4) (Futurist; Italian)

Stamp 'PROVA' on verso Published in Les mots en liberté futuristes (Milan, 1919).
