Mit diesem zentralen Bildthema setzte sich der italienische Künstler einerseits mit der Tradition des klassischen Reiterdenkmals auseinander, andererseits nutzte er es zur Reflexion existenzieller Fragen. Seine Darstellungen von Pferd und Reiter gehen daher weit über die Wiedergabe eines Tiermotivs hinaus. Sie thematisieren das Verhältnis des Menschen zur Natur ebenso wie die existenziellen Erschütterungen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg deutete Marini das traditionsreiche Symbol von Herrschaft und Kontrolle neu. Die vorliegende Rückenansicht eines Reiters auf seinem Pferd vermittelt ein Gefühl von Anonymität und Einsamkeit und verweist zugleich auf die Ambivalenz des Motivs. Einerseits steht es für die Zähmung des wilden Tieres durch den Menschen, andererseits macht es die Fragilität und Unsicherheit dieser vermeintlichen Beherrschung sichtbar. The gouaches by Marino Marini, like his famous sculptures, often revolve around the motif of the "Cavallo e Cavaliere" (Horse and Rider). With this central pictorial theme, the Italian artist engaged on the one hand with the tradition of the classical equestrian monument, and on the other hand used it to reflect on existential questions. His depictions of horse and rider therefore go far beyond the mere representation of an animal motif. They address the relationship between humans and nature as well as the existential upheavals of the 20th century. After the Second World War, Marini reinterpreted the traditional symbol of power and control. The present rear view of a rider on his horse conveys a sense of anonymity and loneliness, while also pointing to the ambivalence of the motif. On the one hand, it stands for the taming of the wild animal by humans; on the other hand, it reveals the fragility and uncertainty of this supposed mastery. Biography from the Archives of askART: The Italian sculptor, painter and graphic artist Marino Marini enrolled at the 'Accademia di Belli Arti' in Florence in 1917. While he was still an art student, Mediterranean antiquity, international Gothic style and medieval Renaissance had a formative influence on him. From 1928 the artist made several lengthy visits to Paris. In 1929 Arturo Martini appointed him to the "Villa Reale" art school in Monza near Milan, where Marino Marini taught sculpture for 11 years. The very same year, the artist presented his first major terracotta sculpture Popolo. Early milestones in Marini's road to public acclaim were a large solo exhibition in Milan in 1932, his participation at the Venice Biennale, the Milan Triennale and the Quadriennale in Rome, where he received the first prize for sculpture in 1935, In his figurative sculptures, Marini strove for archaizing simplicity of form which tended to be abstract. In 1941 Marino Marini was appointed to the chair of sculpture at the "Accademia di Brera" in Milan. Two years later, he made the acquaintance of some important representatives of contemporary sculpture in Ticino. Alberto Giacometti, Fritz Wotruba and Germaine Richier encouraged him in his artistic ambitions and inspired his work. Returning from Switzerland, Marino Marini settled in Milan in 1947, where he resumed his teaching career at the Accademia. Angelo della Città, one of Marini's major works, soon followed. The American art dealer Curt Valentin gave Marini the opportunity to show his work in a large solo exhibition in New York and a series of other exhibitions, which brought him international acclaim. In 1952 Marino Marini received the prestigious first prize for sculpture at the Venice Biennale, two years later, the grand prize of the "Accademia dei Lincei" in Rome followed. These awards lead to many exhibitions in various European cities and two large retrospectives at the Zurich "Kunsthaus" in 1962 and the "Palazzo Venezia" in Rome in 1966. In 1968 the artist was honored with yet another distinction: He became a member of the "Order Pour le mérite" for services to science and art. In 1973 a Marini Museum was inaugurated in Florence, while the artist was dedicated the "Centro di Documentatione dell'Opera di Marino Marini" in the Pistoia town hall, which documented the artist's life and work. Marino Marini entwickelte in den 1950er-Jahren die Werkgruppe der Tänzer und Jongleure, in der Bewegung, Balance und körperliche Spannung zu zentralen Themen wurden. Das vorliegende Werk von 1956 gehört zu diesen stark reduzierten Figuren. Anstelle anatomischer Detailgenauigkeit oder muskulöser Körper modelliert Marini langgezogene Formen und gespannte Linien, die gleichermaßen Anstrengung wie Eleganz vermitteln. Die rau belassene, unregelmäßige Patina verstärkt den expressiven Charakter der Figur und betont ihre fragile, beinahe archaische Wirkung. Innerhalb von Marinis Oeuvre markieren die Jongleur- und Tänzerfiguren eine freiere und bewegtere Erweiterung seiner berühmten Reiterdarstellungen. Sculptor and painter, Marino Marini began his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and from 1929 he began to travel the world; he also taught in Monza until 1940 and, from that year on, at the Brera Academy in Milan. In 1930, fully established in the world of sculpture, Marini made large-scale human figures, usually women or acrobats in bronze; but, from 1935, he discovered the themes that would dominate his mature works: the horse and rider and archaic sculpture, particularly Egyptian and Etruscan. Under this sign he produced the works that earned the recognition of his contemporaries: vigorous figures characterized by archaizing forms and great hieratic rigidity, devoid of movement, which seem to carry with them a terrible internal tragedy. He also made a large number of graphic works and portraits in bronze, of which perhaps the best known is that of Igor Stravinsky (1951). Among his works are Gente (1929), El juglar (1933), Púgil (1935) and Milagro (1955). His facet as a painter began around 1948, when he was living in Switzerland. As with his sculptural works, many of his paintings are close to abstract art; over time they became more dramatic and distorted with rougher surfaces. In 1952 he was awarded the Venice Biennale prize.
