From the seventies onwards, Joseph Marioni began an aesthetic exploration of the limits of painting. In monochrome paintings such as this one, there is a special tension between colour, light and support: Marioni repeatedly applies layers of satin colour on the painting in such a way that, depending on the incidence of light and the viewer's position, they reveal the underlying layers of colour. The painting of the American painter Joseph Marioni falls within the sphere of influence of the New York Radical Painting group, with which he shares above all the research into the parameters of painting. Joseph Marioni's works, created in a characteristic manner since 1970, combine to form a conceptual oeuvre with a resounding aesthetic that allows us to ask fundamental questions about the genre of painting. Marioni's cautious and respectful involvement with the picture, acknowledging the essence of the object without being imposing, exemplarily represents the sophisticated handling of the objects that surround us. The picture becomes a discriminating counterpart asserting its position, its own presence here and now. Despite all immediacy of colour perception, it keeps its distance at all times so that emotional convergence and restrained aloofness balance each other. Considering this tension between empathy and self-control, which is exacted from the artist as well as from the observer, it is only natural that Marioni emphasises several times in an interview that his painting is greatly concerned with intimacy - an intimacy which is highly complex, however. The artist's caution is of the most ethical importance as it serves to balance the whole structure. Marioni's cautious and respectful involvement with the picture, acknowledging the essence of the object without being imposing, exemplarily represents the sophisticated handling of the objects that surround us. The picture becomes a discriminating counterpart asserting its position, its own presence here and now. Despite all immediacy of colour perception, it keeps its distance at all times so that emotional convergence and restrained aloofness balance each other. Considering this tension between empathy and self-control, which is exacted from the artist as well as from the observer, it is only natural that Marioni emphasises several times in an interview that his painting is greatly concerned with intimacy - an intimacy which is highly complex, however. Joseph Marioni is not only a painter, but also an art theorist who sees his own painterly form of expression as radical painting in which he avoids a personal signature style through the application of diverse paint layers, creating monochrome, completely non-representational images. “Radical painting deals intensively with the inner structural relationship between paint mass and support. The experience of this relationship is essentially a singular and personal act of the viewer. The viewer is actively involved - not in the interpretation of an image, but rather in the constitution of meaning […] Radical painting sees its role neither in depicting or abstracting myths or legends, nor in linking the past with the present through mythological or socially mediated signs and symbols. Therein lies the role of images. Images are secondary, measured against the essence of painting. Radical painting is the object of sensual perception, not a vehicle for conveying information”, the artist writes in his programmatic text “Außerhalb der Kartusche” (Outside the Cartouche) which he wrote together with the artist and curator Günter Umberg.
