EUGENE MARIOTON (France, 1854–1933). “Hunter.” Bronze sculpture. Measurements: 81 cm (height). A French sculptor and medalist born in Paris, Eugène Marioton was a student of Auguste Dumont, Gabriel-Jules Thomas, and Jean-Marie Bonnassieux. He was also the brother of fellow sculptor Claudius Marioton and painter Jean-Alfred Marioton. He worked in both sculpture and medal making, and regularly participated in the Salon of the Society of French Artists in Paris, where he also served on the jury in 1905. In the last two decades of the 19th century, Marioton was awarded a bronze medal at this exhibition in 1882, a third-class medal in 1883, and a second-class medal in 1884 (that same year, he won a second-class medal in Mr. Willemsens’s first competition). He was also a laureate in Dumont’s class, winning first prize in the competition of the Free Society of Fine Arts for his marble bas-relief “Hero and Leander,” and that same year he received a scholarship from the General Council of the Seine. He participated in the 1889 Paris World’s Fair with the bronze group “Les frères d’armes,” one year after winning a travel grant in the Prix de Rome competition. Furthermore, in 1890 he was awarded the Prix Desprez, and at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair, he was one of the artists representing the thirty-six participating nations through 2.5-meter-tall figures, with his work “Mineur belge.” Works by Eugène Marioton are currently held in the Louvre Museum, the Rouen Museum of Fine Arts, the National Museum of Romania, and other public and private collections.

EUGÈNE MARIOTON (Paris, 1857- 1933). "Viking family". Patinated bronze. Signed. Measurements: 81 x 41 x 30 cm. Sculpture of round bulk in bronze that represents with remarkable expressive load a half-naked warrior, erect and carrier of an axe, whose corporal firmness acts as compositional axis of the scene. At his side is a woman holding a child in her arms, who gently rests on the man's torso, creating a visual and symbolic link that articulates the work. The warrior, by putting his arm around them, not only physically supports them, but also embodies a protective function that endows the whole with a restrained dramatism and an intense narrative reading. The precise modeling, the anatomical tension and the interaction between the figures reveal an academic and emotive conception of the sculptural group, in which strength and vulnerability are presented as complementary elements.Eugène Marioton was a leading figure in French sculpture and medallion making in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts under the tutelage of masters such as Auguste Dumont, Gabriel-Jules Thomas and Jean-Marie Bonnassieux, he was integrated early in the French academic tradition, to which he was able to contribute his own language based on technical refinement and a particularly intense narrative sensibility. From his formative years he demonstrated a precocious talent, as revealed by the terracotta bas-relief La Fille de Jephté venant au devant de son père, presented in the 1883 competition, and the first prize obtained that same year at the Société libre des beaux-arts with his marble Héro et Léandre. Institutional recognition was also reflected in the scholarships he received from the General Council of the Seine and in his outstanding participation in ciselation and sculpture competitions, including access to the second trial of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1888, accompanied by a travel grant that consolidated his training as a sculptor and medalist. His career was closely linked to the Salon de la Société des artistes français, where he exhibited regularly and of which he became a member of the jury in 1905. His artistic evolution can be followed through the Salons: from the bronze medal of 1882 and the third class of 1883, to the second class of 1884 with Chactas, passing through emblematic works such as Diogène et sa lanterne in 1885, Les Frères d'armes in 1888 - whose bronze was presented at the Universal Exhibition of 1889 - or Le Dompteur, awarded the prestigious Crozatier prize in 1889. Marioton demonstrated a remarkable versatility in genres, alternating mythological, allegorical and realistic themes, and knew how to capture the spirit of his time through a vigorous, elegant and profoundly academic sculptural language. His participation in the Universal Exposition of 1900, in which he represented one of the participating nations through a monumental character, the Mineur belge, is evidence of the international recognition achieved by his work. Marioton's presence in public collections reinforces his historical relevance. In France, the Diogène in the square du Temple in Paris, cast under the Vichy regime, and the Chactas in the Museum of Fine Arts in Rouen stand out, while in Algeria Le Zéphir in Béjaïa is preserved, and in Romania two significant pieces, La Danse and Le Lancer, deposited in the National Museum of Art in Bucharest. The whole of his production, together with the parallel career of his brothers Claudius and Jean Alfred Marioton, makes this family a unique reference of French sculpture and decorative arts of his time, and places Eugène Marioton as an outstanding exponent of fin-de-siècle academicism, capable of articulating tradition, technical virtuosity and a deep narrative sensibility.

A beautiful bronze figure by French sculptor Eugène Marioton (1857-1933) depicting a classical Greek woman, possibly a muse, dancing as she plays the double aulos flutes. The piece is signed on the base 'Eug. Marioton'. Eugène is one of the three Marioton brothers, all of whom were artists. His eldest brother, Claudius, is the most famous of the three, having exhibited at the Salon de Paris many times and winning a plethora of awards at the Exposition Universelle in 1889. Eugène himself was an active member of the Society of French Artists, and received several accolades and prizes throughout his career, including a prize from the Society of Fine Arts and a young artist grant from the General Council of the Seine in 1884. Eugene Marioton (1857–1933) French, Figural Female Bronze Sculpture. Cast bronze figural sculpture of a classical female figure casting a flowing garment from her shoulders. Incise signature on base. Marked France. Dated 1906. Size: 6 x 15 x 30 in. Eugène Marioton (7 April 1857 – 19 September 1933) was a distinguished French sculptor and medalist known for his refined bronze figural works in the Neoclassical and Romantic traditions. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under prominent sculptors such as Auguste Dumont, Gabriel-Jules Thomas, and Jean-Marie Bonnassieux. Marioton began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1882 and continued through 1922, receiving honors including bronze medals at the 1889 and 1900 Expositions Universelles and a travel scholarship in 1888. His work includes elegant small-scale bronzes with allegorical, mythological, and Orientalist themes, often cast by renowned foundries like E. Colin and Siot-Decauville. In 1905, he was appointed a juror for the Salon’s sculpture division, reflecting his influence in the French art world. Marioton’s sculptures are held in public collections across France and beyond, and his works remain sought after by collectors for their craftsmanship and expressive detail.
