Kyra Markham (AM 1891-1967) Winter Twilight

    Est: $400 - $800

Kyra Markham (American 1891-1967) Winter Twilight lithograph on paper signed identified and editioned lower margin 26/50 10 x 13" 17 x 21" as framed. Markham was an actress, painter, and printmaker. She left high school around 1907 to study drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago; two years later, she was acting in Chicago's experimental Little Theater. In 1913, in 1916 she joined the Provincetown Playhouse theater company in the artists' colony at Provincetown, Massachusetts. She also occasionally designed book covers and served as a movie art director. Around 1922, Markham was briefly married to landscape designer and architect Lloyd Wright (1892–1972), son of renowned Prairie School architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959). She executed striking mural decorations for several New York restaurants, jazz clubs, and nightclubs until the 1929 stock market crash eliminated such commissions. In 1930, she studied with Alexander Abels (1897-1983) at the Art Students League. A year later, her work received favorable notice at the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors exhibition. In 1934, her first solo exhibition took place in Ogunquit, Maine. Markham also resumed mural painting, and took up lithography and portraiture. The following year, she began to achieve success as a printmaker. A lithograph of hers won a prize at the Philadelphia Print Club's annual exhibition, and impressions of her prints were acquired by the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress. In 1936, she joined the Federal Arts Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a government relief program, which sponsored her lively lithographs of backstage scenes. The prestigious annual publication Fine Prints of the Year cited her prints in 1937 and 1938 In the late 1930s, Markham began her two-decade association with the greeting card publisher American Arts, Inc., which promoted her art in reproduction. For the 1939 New York World's Fair, she executed forty dioramas for the Hall of Inventions. In 1941, Lowes Ziegfeld Theater in New York exhibited her allegorical paintings and drawings of legendary women. During World War II, she created paintings and prints to boost home front patriotism and satirize Nazism. Following her 1946 move with her husband to a farm in Halifax, Vermont, Markham ended her printmaking career, yet she continued to paint and draw. In 1960, after her husband died, she moved to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where local scenes inspired her last works.

  • Kyra Markham (1891-1967) American, 1936 Lithograph, "Penny Lady?"
    Jan. 25, 2026

Kyra Markham (1891-1967) American, 1936 Lithograph, "Penny Lady?"

    Est: $400 - $800

Kyra Markham (1891-1967) American, 1936 Lithograph, "Penny Lady?". Signed and dated in pencil. Titled and inscribed "Ed. 50" in pencil.   Overall Size: 18 1/4 x 20 3/4 in. Sight Size: 11 x 13 1/2 in. Provenance: Peter Klipstas. Portola Valley, California.   Realist painter-printmaker Kyra Markham had significant experience as an actress from 1909 into the 1920s with the Chicago Little Theater, in movies in Los Angeles, and from 1916 with the Provincetown Players in Massachusetts. Born Elaine Hyman in Chicago in 1891, Markham studied art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1907-1909, when, discovered by Maurice Brown, she left school to act. Though she supplemented her income from acting with work as a muralist and illustrator, it was not until 1930 that she returned to the study of art with Alexander Abels at the Art Students League in New York City. In 1934, she studied printmaking, including lithography, and took part in the WPA artists' program from 1935-1937. She was awarded the Mary S. Collins Prize at the Philadelphia Print Club annual exhibition in 1935. Her paintings and lithographs are primarily realist in style and run the gamut from poetic landscapes to Social-Realist commentaries such as ("Penny, Lady?," 1936, a poor, aged couple playing the hurdy-gurdy on the street, and "Lockout," 1937, with laborers prevented from going back to work. There are also everyday urban scenes such as "Bleecker Street Fire Hydrant," 1942, where kids dance in arching swathes of water that are charged with an element of magic and transcendence. "Night and Morn," 1937, with two nude figures, a dark male and light female, becomes a yin-yang swirl of forms. Markham reprises her theatrical career in the lithograph "Twelfth Night," 1934, creating a complex design of architectural elements backstage at a theater with two carpenters at work on two levels of the stage set for Shakespeare's play. Prior to 1916, Markham was emotionally involved over a period of time with the novelist Theodore Dreiser, author of "An American Tragedy." Her work is in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution and Georgetown University (Lady MacBeth, A Self-Portrait," 1935, and "Winter Twilight"), both in Washington, D.C.; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Whitney Museum of American Art, both in New York City. Markham was a member of the National Association of Women Artists, Southern Vermont Artists and Deerfield Valley Artists. Kyra Markham died in 1967.

KYRA MARKHAM Lockout. Lithograph, 1937. 255x306 mm; 10x12 inches, full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 16/50 in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression of this scarce lithograph. An artist as well as an actress, Markham's (1891-1967) works seek out every day dramas, assisted by her use of high contrast and shadows. Markham attended the Art Institute of Chicago from 1907 to 1909, when she left the Institute to work at Chicago's Little Theater and later with the Provincetown Players in Massachusetts. She became an illustrator to supplement her acting career and in 1930 attended classes at the Art Students League in New York, where she started to work in lithography. Her employment with the Federal Art Project in 1936 coincided with what are considered the finest examples of her lithographic œuvre. The New York Herald Tribune named Markham among the Federal Art Project's Graphic Arts Division artists who "assist particularly in carrying on the project's graphic work to a success unsurpassed by any of its other departments" after viewing the spring 1937 exhibition of "Recent Fine Prints" at the Federal Art Project Gallery in New York.
