Daniel Marot (1661-1752), architect, furniture designer and engraver, son of the French court architect Jean Marot (1661-1752), and pupil of Jean Le Pautre. Members of the Marot family were among the many Huguenots who fled north to the Republic of the Seven United Provinces (Dutch Republic) after the abolition of the edict of Nantes in 1685. Marot was trained as a dessinateur, in the tradition of Jean Le Pautre and Jean Bérain, providing designs for carpenters, gardeners, weavers, smiths, woodcutters and cabinetmakers.

Hollstein 7. - Splendid, high contrast, even and clear impression on full sheets which are unmounted. Occasional small tears, faint creases, light traces of wear and storage as well as occasional stains in the broad margins. The images in almost untouched condition. Hollstein 7. - Prachtvoller, kontrastreicher, gleichmässiger und klarer Druck über die vollen Papierbögen, die hier nicht montiert sind. Vereinzelte kleinere Läsuren, schwache Knickfalten, leichte Gebrauchs- und Lagerungsspuren sowie vereinzelten Flecke in den breiten Rändern. Die Darstellungen in nahezu unberührter Erhaltung. - Selten.

Daniel Marot I., "Venitque Salutifer Urbi" anlandende Segelschiffe, von den Einheimischen am Strand mit Opferfeuern freudig begrüßt, am Mast des Schiffes weht eine Fahne mit der lateinischen Aufschrift "Venitque Salutifer Urbi [dt.: Und er kam in die Stadt Salus]", unter der Szene erläuternder lateinischer Text "Romanis Medicus, sole Indice, qui datus anguis" und rechts "Ille novo et Gallis auspice sole datur", die Darstellung bezieht sich auf das 15. Buch der Metamorphosen des Ovid (43 v. Chr. bis 17 n. Chr.) und hier speziell auf Vers 744, welcher die Ankunft des Arztes Asklepios in Gestalt einer Schlange zur Beendigung einer Epidemie in Rom erzählt, seltene Radierung mit Kupferstich auf kräftigem Bütten mit Wasserzeichen in Gestalt eines Fisches, kontrastreicher Abzug, rechts unter der Darstellung signiert "D. Marot Inue. et sculp.", Blatt alt auf die Darstellung beschnitten, geringe Altersspuren, ungerahmt, Blattmaße ca. 25 x 39 cm. Künstlerinfo: frz. Afm. ca. 64 x 91 cm. Achter passepartout en ingelijst. Van der Haer p. 152. Muller 2683 ("Zeer fraaije en zeldzame pl."). 'Haagse Kermis met optreckende Burgerry sig presenterende aan haar Koningklyke Hoogheden Myn Heer de Prince en Mevrouwe de Princesse van Orange' te dateren 1686 - 1688 gravure, 64x92 cm Deze Haagse kermis werd in 1686 gehouden op de Vijverberg, met de paraderende schutterij vanaf het huis van Jacques-Louis graaf de Noyelles links tussen de kramen over de markt tot aan de poort waar saluutschoten worden gebracht voor het prinselijk paar dat vanuit het raam in het stadhouderlijk kwartier toekijkt. Rechts staat de wacht van de prins te paard opgesteld voor de Kaatsbaan en de Komedie. In de lucht twee engelen met het prinselijk wapen. Foliate scroll crest and pierced vase and bellflower splat with foliate scroll ornament, outswept scroll arms, cabriole legs with shell carved knees joined by arched h-stretcher, hoof feet. 20" tall seat, 29" arm, 47" back. 29" x 24". Water stained finish on one chair.

The present work is identical in style, though apparently for an actual garden rather than a theatre, and it differs further by the inclusion of figures.
