Ce petit pan de mur jaune — ou plutôt ivoire — qui absorbe la lumière pour mieux la renvoyer dans notre rétine, revêt une résonance presque proustienne. Il s’agit de peinture à l’état pur, avec les touches de pinceau déposées par Albert Marquet à cet endroit précis, pour nous faire pénétrer dans sa composition. De cette tache, soudain devenue pignon, naît la façade d’une maison à deux étages, immédiatement suivie de son reflet dans le fleuve. Toute la scène s’organise autour de la ligne horizontale d’un chemin de halage — tracée de façon nette et précise — qui divise la composition comme un miroir. À cette structure géométrique, Marquet oppose les formes organiques des collines en arrière-plan et, plus encore, le feuillage dense des arbres qui occupent, au premier plan, un îlot au milieu des eaux. Paysagiste sensible aux effets de lumière — qu’il aime isoler en petites touches — Marquet flirte avec l’abstraction sans jamais s’y abandonner totalement. Sa touche reste visible, étalant les couleurs comme s’il peignait directement sur une palette. La bande horizontale figurant la berge et son reflet mêle bruns et verts dans une approche picturale annonciatrice du fauvisme. Sa palette — à la fois sourde et lumineuse — déploie une subtile harmonie de couleurs complémentaires, plaçant Marquet parmi les plus grands coloristes du mouvement fauve.

(1875 Bordeaux - 1947 Paris) Ploumanach 1928 entstandene Landschaft mit Blick auf den kleinen Hafenort an der bretonischen Nordküste, der sog. Côte de Granit Rose. Marquet war neben dem befreundeten Henri Matisse, André Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck, Raoul Dufy, Kees van Dongen und Othon Friesz ein Mitbegründer des Fauvismus. 1890 ging er nach Paris, wo er 1892 Matisse kennenlernte, der zum lebenslangen Freund wurde; sie beeinflussten sich gegenseitig, zumal sie zeitweilig Zimmergenossen waren, zusammen studierten und arbeiteten. 1902 fand in der Galerie Berthe Weill die erste gemeinsame Ausstellung statt. 1905 stellte Marquet im Pariser Salon dAutomne gemeinsam mit De Vlaminck, Derain und Matisse aus. Die Ausstellung führte zu einem Skandal und Prägung des Begriffs "Fauvismus". Marquet unternahm seit Anfang des 20. Jhs. zahlreiche, ausgedehnte Reisen durch Frankreich (u.a. an die Küsten der Bretagne und Normandie), Europa und Nordafrika. 1920 hielt er sich erstmals in Algier auf, wo er 1940-1945 ganz lebte. Aquarell u. Bleistift/Papier. R. u. sign.; 17 cm x 23.8 cm. Rahmen. Dieses Blatt wird durch das Wildenstein Plattner Institute (WPI) in das in Vorbereitung befindliche Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde von Albert Marquet aufgenommen. The Offset Lithograph is from an unknown edition size. and is not framed. The condition was rated A-: Near Mint, very light signs of handling. Additional details: Albert Marquet's "Fenêtre à la Goulette," painted in 1926, captures a serene scene viewed through an open window. In the foreground, a vase brimming with vibrant flowers rests on the windowsill. Beyond, the calm waters of the Mediterranean Sea stretch out, with a sailboat gently navigating its expanse. Marquet's delicate brushstrokes and impressionistic style lend a tranquil and intimate atmosphere to the composition. Marquet, a close friend of Henri Matisse, often painted alongside him during their travels. In 1926, they visited Tunisia together, where Marquet found inspiration in the coastal town of La Goulette. This painting reflects the influence of their shared experiences and the Mediterranean environment on his work. The painting was later featured in an exhibition at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris, which ran from October 1975 to January 1976. To promote the exhibition, the museum produced a large-scale reproduction of "Fenêtre à la Goulette" in 1970. This billboard-sized poster was printed by the renowned Mourlot studio, known for its high-quality art reproductions.

The painting in question shares a similar composition with Albert Marquet's Quai du Louvre, Soleil d'hiver, a masterpiece by the French artist executed in 1906. In it, Marquet presents a panoramic view of the Seine and its surroundings, capturing the essence of Paris in winter with a melancholy yet vibrant atmosphere, while in this composition the lighting reflects a more golden finish. This work belongs to the series of cityscapes that Marquet developed after renting an apartment on the Quai du Louvre in 1905. From his privileged vantage point on the seventh floor, he observed the dynamics of the river, the Île de la Cité and the silhouette of the Eiffel Tower, which in this case is subtly sketched. His interest in compositional structure is reflected in the depth of the perspective and in the arrangement of the elements that guide the viewer's gaze across the scene. Marquet depicts a wet boulevard glistening with rain, with human figures and carriages that energize the composition. Bare trees frame the view, while the Seine, in silvery tones, is lost in the distance. Unlike other fauvists such as Derain and Vlaminck, who used arbitrary colors, Marquet moderated the chromatic intensity and balanced it with a solid structuring of the scene. Albert Marquet was a French painter, initially known as one of the fauvist painters, although his painting evolved to a more naturalistic style. In 1890 he moved to Paris to attend the École des Arts Decoratifs, where he met Henri Matisse and became roommates. Marquet began his studies in 1892 at the École des Beaux-Arts with Gustave Moreau. In those years, Marquet exhibited paintings at the Salon des Indépendants. His early compositions were characterized by a Fauvist approach, in which he had a fine control of drawing and responded to light, not only intensifying the strongest tones, but also seeing the weaker ones in coloristic terms. In 1905 he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, where his paintings were shown alongside those of Henri Matisse, Maurice de Vlaminck, André Derain, Othon Friesz, Georges Rouault, Raoul Dufy, Henri Manguin, Georges Braque, Louis Valtat, Georges Dufrénoy and Jean Puy. At the end of 1907, he remained in Paris and devoted himself, together with Matisse, to a series of city views. Marquet alternated work in his Paris studio with many areas of the European coast and North Africa. He was mainly concerned with Algeria and Algiers and Tunisia.
