The print shows Lincoln in a black coat and bow tie facing toward the viewer's right. The portrait is surrounded by the decorative oakleaf and floral ovular border which is encased in a decorative rectangular frame all of which are part of the engraving. The title plate is located just below the portrait. Printed in the margin just below the image, "Painted and engraved by Wm. E. Marshall." In the original dark ogee frame, no mat or glass, 27 1/2" x 21 1/4", could be restored. Considered the most accurate portrait of Lincoln at the end of his life, as he posed a week before his assassination.

This print was produced in 1868, the year that U.S. Grant was elected to the presidency. The head-and-shoulders portrait depicts Grant as a Major General, facing slightly left, wearing his uniform. The work has been hand-colored with vibrant blue and yellow details on the uniform and light brown coloring to the hair and beard. William Edgar Marshall (1837-1906) was born to Scottish parents in New York. At a young age, Marshall moved to Washington D.C. to work as a watchmaker. He soon began engraving decorative artwork onto pocket watch covers and thus began his career as a professional engraver. Marshall went on to study in France during the Civil War and returned to the U. S. in 1865. Upon his return to the United States, Marshall painted several notable figures including U.S. Grant and George Sherman during the period following the Civil War.

        This is a monumental portrait engraving of Civil War General Grant | This is a very special original artist proof hand inscribed and signed by the artist William E. Marshall | This antique first artist proof is housed in a fantastic beautiful ornate custom frame | Measures approx. 33" x 37" | William Edgar Marshall was born to Scottish parents in New York City in 1837. At a young age, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he earned a living as a watchmaker. He then worked for the US Treasury Department, where he learned how to engrave portraits. In 1858 he was given a rare opportunity to work for the American Bank Note Company, where he spent Òseveral years and became one of its best engravers." At the age of 21, he set off for Paris, where he planned to learn how to become a great painter. He returned to the United States during the Civil War, when "news of the assassination of Lincoln brought him home to paint, from photographs and descriptions, a portrait of the martyred PresidentÓ (Hartt). He also painted several notable figures including Ulysses S. Grant and George Sherman during this period. According to his obituary, visitors to his studio may have also heard him share his "pleasant anecdotes of Emmerson, Longfellow, Dickens, Hawthrone, and Holmes.

        DESCRIPTION: William E. Marshall (American, 1837-1906). Etching of George Washington done after the portrait by Gilbert Stuart. 19th century. In wooden frame with gold painted inner border. Marshall was a student of Cyrus Durand in New York City and then, in Paris, William Marshall became noted for his portraits and graphics work. In 1865, he exhibited at the Paris Salon. MEASUREMENTS: 22-3/4" x 17-1/2". Overall with frame 27-1/2" x 22-1/4". CONDITION: Repair in upper left corner. Toning throughout paper due to age. Slight undulation to paper at bottom. Rubbing and scratching to frame.
