FEMME ASSISE Höhe: 17,5 cm. Auf der Plinthe Signatur „JOËL MARTEL“ und Gießerstempel. Bronze; gegossen, mittelbraun patiniert.

Exhibitions: "European sculpture in the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014. Size: 43 x 31 x 34 cm. Lot 18 Jan and Joël Martel French (1896-1966) Locomotive (c. 1931) aluminum Jan Martel and Joël Martel were French sculptors and identical twin brothers born in 1896. They were among the founding members of Union des Artistes Modernes. Their works include ornamental sculptures, statues, monuments and fountains displaying characteristics typical of the Art Deco and Cubist periods. Their work was part of the sculpture event in the art competition at the 1948 Summer Olympics. Sharing the same workshop, their jointly created works were co-signed simply Martel or J.J. Martel. The brothers took part in a number of Paris exhibitions including the Salon des Indépendants, Salon d'Automne, Salon des Tuileries and the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs. iIn 1925, their concrete trees were featured in a collaboration with architect Robert Mallet-Stevens. In 1932, they created the Claude Debussy monument which sits on the boulevard Lannes in Paris while other examples of their work can be found permanently displayed in Paris and in other parts of France. At the request of the French national railways system, the Martel brothers were commissioned to create a series of modernist aluminum sculptures for the Colonial Exhibition,1931 of which this is one. THE GEOFFREY BEENE FOUNDATION Geoffrey Beene was one of the world’s most iconic fashion designers, who died from cancer in 2004. The Geoffrey Beene Foundation was founded in 2006 by G. Thompson (“Tom”) Hutton, Esq. (under his discretionary authority as Executor of the Estate of Geoffrey Beene). The mission of the Foundation is to support critical philanthropic causes, the most important being the establishment in 2006 of the Geoffrey Beene Cancer Research Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Tom Hutton initiated and orchestrated the creation of the Geoffrey Beene Cancer Research Center with Harold Varmus, M.D. (Nobel Laureate and former CEO of MSK), because Hutton wanted to fund new revolutionary research initiatives that would lead to new treatments for cancer patients. Since its creation in 2006, the Geoffrey Beene Cancer Research Center has served as the nucleus for revolutionary new research approaches in preventing, diagnosing and treating cancer. Together the Geoffrey Beene Foundation and Geoffrey Beene, LLC (until 2018 when its business was sold) have been the sole funding sources and have funded approximately 140 separate new revolutionary research initiatives across all cancers to develop new treatments and diagnostics for cancer patients. The new research has resulted in major breakthroughs in multiple cancers, saving and prolonging thousands of lives. The Geoffrey Beene Foundation has also supported major causes relating to educational scholarships, veterans, protection of women, children and their families, animal welfare, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, scientific awards for builders of science institutions and initiatives relating to the fashion industry, such as the creation of the Council of Fashion Designers of America annual Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. “HOPE IS WHERE THE SCIENCE IS.” 'J.J.
