He arrived in Australia in 1835 and painted there until his death in 1878. Conrad Martens throughout his time as Ships Artist became life long friends with Charles Darwin. He went on to become one of the most proficient, prominent and prolific landscape artist in the colony. When the Beagle arrived in 1836, Darwin and Captain Fitzroy commissioned a number of paintings from Beagle's voyages in Tierra Del Fuego and the Pacific. Other large commissions followed, and in 1837 some of Martens' Australian watercolours were exhibited at the Royal Society in London. He had intended only to visit Australia but soon recognised the rich opportunities for artistic inspiration and a potential market in the burgeoning colony of New South Wales. It was reported on 31 July 1835 that ‘a gentleman of the name of Martin’ was travelling ‘in search of the picturesque’, which he soon found amid the towering sandstone escarpments and the seemingly endless forested valleys of the ranges.1 Martens sold his first view of Govett’s Leap, near Blackheath, as early as 6 August, with similarly impressive natural landscapes forming an important part of his oeuvre from that time.2 In December 1874, Martens, then in his seventies and having travelled widely throughout eastern NSW and southern Queensland, undertook another trip to the Blue Mountains. This decision may have been prompted by recent public recognition he had received. In 1873 the Trustees of the new National Gallery of Victoria commissioned a watercolour, One of the falls on the Apsley, for their developing collection. The following year a variant view of the spectacular gorges of the Apsley River, in the northern tablelands of NSW, was commissioned for the New South Wales Academy of Art (later Art Gallery of New South Wales).3 The interest provoked by these important acquisitions may have encouraged Martens’ return to the increasingly accessible Blue Mountains for further inspiration and opportunities. A number of paintings resulted, including depictions of the recently opened trainline, which paved the way for the establishment of new townships and ever-expanding tourism.4 Fortuitously many of Martens’ sketchbooks survive, including that from his 1874 journey which shows his route and demonstrates his superlative draughtsmanship. Two pencil studies of Govetts Leap, drawn on 16 December, are included – one of which was most certainly the source for the watercolour being offered here.5 In the study we see his meticulous attention to the topography of the terrain and strata of the columns, positioning himself so that a damaged gum tree counterbalances the nearest cliff-face, framing the scene and leading the viewer’s eye along the meandering valley. The painting is similar but has been enhanced for picturesque effect. We can no longer see the top of the left cliff and are thus immersed within the dramatic scene. Martens’ use of blues and purples for the shadowed valley enhances the sensation of vast depth, which is further highlighted by the tiny figure in white who provides scale and, by holding carefully to a branch as he peers tentatively over the precipice, encourages an understandable sense of awe in the ‘wild magnificence’ and ‘wonderful natural sublimity’ of the New South Wales escarpments.6 Marten’s Account book, kept throughout his career, provides invaluable information about his output and his clientele. This watercolour was acquired by William Busby, a pastoralist and parliamentarian, in July 1876 for £21 – it has remained with the family ever since. 1. ‘Domestic and Miscellaneous Intelligence’, The Australian, 31 July 1835, p. 2 2. Sold to J. Macarthur. Martens painted oils and watercolours of the same scene in 1837, 1839 and 1847. 3. One of the falls on the Apsley, 1873, watercolour, collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne and Apsley Falls, 1874, watercolour, collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney. These were based upon pencil sketches made when Martens visited in 1852. 4. Pencil sketches that Martens drew during this visit (now held in the State Library of New South Wales) informed two paintings commissioned by King of Tahlee, the elegant sandstone commissioner’s residence, comfortably situated above Nelson Bay at Port Stephens.1 As was usual in his practice, Martens manipulated atmospheric conditions as a compositional device; in this oil painting, the dark and shadowed native vegetation and storm clouds in the right half of the composition are interrupted by the vertical boat mast, while the sweep of the illuminated sail leads the eye towards the buildings, and the sunlit, cleared land and jetty at left.2  The King family had proven generous supporters of Martens. When the travelling artist had first arrived in Sydney in April 1835, he carried a letter of introduction from Robert FitzRoy, captain of the Beagle, to King, the previous captain of that now-famous ship, upon which Marten had served as expedition artist, together with the young Charles Darwin and King’s son, midshipman Phillip Gidley King junior. FitzRoy’s warm letter and King’s subsequent friendship and patronage were critical to Marten’s professional success in Sydney. During his long career, Martens produced an extensive body of watercolours, oil paintings, drawings, sketches and lithographs capturing the sparkling waters of Port Jackson’s numerous bays; picturesque views of Australian environments seen during his travels from the Illawarra to the Darling Downs; and numerous local and rural residences, including those of the Kings, their relatives the Macarthurs, and other leading figures of the colony’s burgeoning civil community and squattocracy. King served as commissioner from 1839 – 49 and was the last in that position to reside at Tahlee; the original house was destroyed by fire in 1860. Martens continued to paint regularly for the Kings, including to record the funeral flotilla of by-then Rear Admiral King across Sydney Harbour upon his death in 1856.3 1. Martens recorded painting Tahlee from the water (Dec 1841) and Tahlee from the Island (May 1842) for King. In 1855, he painted a View of Tahlee for Reverend R. King. He also recorded four other views of the house: two commissioned in 1841 (Mrs Dumaresq); one in 1842 (J.W. White) and one purchased by ‘Wilshire Esq’ (possibly the artist William Pitt Wilshire) from the Fine Arts Society exhibition in Sydney in 1849. See Conrad Martens, Account of Pictures Painted at Sydney N. S. Wales, SLNSW DLMS 142. For a compilation of his 1841 sketches, see https://hunterlivinghistories.com/2012/01/23/conrad-martens-in-newcastle-and-the-hunter (accessed 4 June 2022) 2. In another version from the same vantage point, the sailing boat is replaced with a rowing boat; see Conrad Martens, Tahlee House, Port Stephens, NSW, sold Sotheby’s, Sydney, 4 Dec. 1994, lot. 25 3. Thirteen paintings commissioned by King, three by Mrs King (including two of her husband’s funeral: SLNSW ML 994, private collection), plus more by other relatives are recorded by Martens in his Account, SLNSW DLMS 142.  ALISA BUNBURY

It is thought that Martens paid one of the locals to ferry him between the two islands. Many of the sketches he produced on this trip progressed into later watercolours and and oil painting. RELATED WORK: Conrad Martens, View on the South Side of Moorea 1835, pencil on paper, from Sketchbook I, no. 81, The Collection of Cambridge University Library, Cambridge.
