Dino Martens (1894-1970) Italian, Enameled Murano Glass Dimpled Vase. Irregular opening and shape throughout in rich but muddled earth tones of green, blue, brown, and yellow. Made in 1960s for Aureliano Toso.   Size: 4 x 4 x 10 in.  #3 #8972 .  Dino Martens (1894-1970) was an Italian painter and designer particularly noted for his glass work. Born in Venice, he trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti. He had his paintings exhibited at the Venice Biennale (1924-1930) and after his return from Italy’s African Wars became the artistic director of Aureliano Toso, a famous Venetian glass works, when he moved to Murano, an island near Venice known throughout the world for its glassmaking. He remained there for many years producing many noted works using traditional Venetian techniques but producing some original effects and daring asymmetric shapes, first at Salviati & Co. and the Successori Andrea Rioda. He painted frequently as well, but never achieved the same level of acclaim with his oils that his works on glass garnered. From 1946 to 1960 Martens worked almost exclusively for Toso, but a disagreement with them led him to leave the art glass world for good in 1963.

About the collection: The late collector's wife recalls their first glass purchase in a London antique shop circa 1985, which ignited a 30+ year passion for the genre. The couple and their daughter acquired pieces individually during their travels around Western Europe, Toronto, and New York, and ultimately amassed around 300 vessels and sculptures by artists including Fulvio Bianconi, Toots Zynsky, Carlo Scarpa, Ercole Barovier, Paolo Venini, Vittorio Ferro and others. "My husband became a student of the art he collected," recalls Mrs. N. and their daughter. "With each new artist he admired, he would buy books about them, and the biographies and catalogs became catalysts for acquiring more pieces. He was always looking for variety, and he would seek out individual pieces to round out a segment of the collection. When something caught his eye, he pounced on it, and if he couldn't have that particular piece, he'd search for one like it."
