Homer Dodge Martin (New York, 1836-1897) A Forest Brook, 1881 Oil on canvas 18" x 30" Signed and dated to the bottom left corner, titled to the reverse and on a plaque affixed to the frame. The frame measures 23 1/2" x 35 1/2". New York landscape painter Homer Dodge Martin was a student of William Hart and associated with the Hudson River School. Following a trip to Europe in 1876, his landscapes became more influenced by the Impressionists and Barbizon school. His scene of the Seine titled Harp of the Winds (1895) is on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and his Adirondack landscape Upper Ausable Lake (1868) is on view at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. HOMER DODGE MARTIN (AMERICAN 1836-1897) LADY SEATED BY AN EXPANSIVE RIVERSCAPE, POSSIBLY NORMANDY signed with initials HDM lower left oil on canvas 61 x 50.5cm; 24 x 19 1/4in 87.5 x 76.5cm; 34 1/2 x 30 1/8in (framed) Born and raised in Albany, New York, Homer Dodge Martin was encouraged to pursue an artistic career by Erastus Dow Palmer (1817-1904). During the early 1860s, Dodge Martin spent his summers in the Catskills, Adirondacks and White Mountains and composed expansive lake and mountain views in the manner of the Hudson River School. From 1882-1886 he lived in France spending much of his time in Normandy, influenced by the work of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Eugène Boudin. Adopting the looser brushwork of both artists he earned the label the 'first American impressionist' and on visits to England he befriended James McNeill Whistler. He returned to New York in 1893. Ill with cancer, partially blind and suffering from depression, he moved to Saint Paul in Minnesota. There in 1895 he painted two of his best known works, Adirondacks Scenery, painted from memory and Harp of the Wind, acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The present oil combines the sublime of the American landscape with Dodge Martin's facility to paint en plein air learnt from the French Barbizon painters.

In 1876, 1880, and 1881, Martin traveled in England, where he befriended the American expatriate artist James McNeill Whistler. Martin became familiar with the light-infused work of Corot and Boudin, adopting the looser brushwork and relaxed compositions of these artists. Martin also learned to favor quickly executed on-site sketches over the detailed, studio-painted inventions of his previous work, earning him the title of the "first American impressionist." He worked predominantly as a landscape painter—whether he focused more on the Romantic elements of the genre as part of the Hudson School (in his earlier years) or on its more realistic elements as part of the Barbizon School or as an impressionist painter of it (later in life, and after an influential trip to France). He enjoyed making sketches of numerous vistas and valleys across upstate New York before painting them from memory from within his studio located in the iconic Tenth Street Studio Building that served as the center of NYC art production in the 19th c. Here we have a dreamy landscape capturing the subtle natural daylight and verdant beauty of the Hudson River Valley, including a lone man rowing a boat along the river's left bank. The absolute peace and serenity of the American land that has been captured here by Martin reflect nothing of the tumultuous events and aftermath of the Civil War that marked the times. His work is cherished by collectors across the country and has become part of the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, the MET, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Addison Gallery of Art, et. al. Homer Dodge Martin (1836 - 1897) Oil on board, Signed Lower Left, Measures ( 6 x 9 inches) w/frame ( 8.5 x 11.5 inches) Born in Albany, New York, the same year as Alexander Wyant, on 28 October 1836, Martin forged a career that spanned the Hudson River School style to more of a plein-air style that approximated impressionism. Popular with the earlier critics, Martin was praised with hyperbole: "his finest canvases looked as if no one but God and he had ever seen the places pictured" (Sherman, 1917, p. 4) but was justly allocated a respectful place in the pantheon of American landscape painters. Martin was the son of Homer Martin and Sarah Dodge. Martin's future wife Elizabeth verified that he made drawings as a child (Martin, 1904, pp. 4-5) and a lot of what he learned was self-taught. Erastus Dow Palmer, the sculptor, recognized Martin's talent and invited him to attend a salon of artists that included George Boughton (1833-1905), William Hart (1823-1894) and James M. Hart (1828-1901).

Homer Dodge Martin (1836 - 1897) Forest Interior Oil on Board. Signed on lower right. Homer Dodge Martin was one of the first artists to introduce Impressionism into American painting. He is known for his melancholy, poetic landscapes, with subtle color and treatment of light. Martin was part of a generation or group of artists whose works were transitional between the Hudson River School and the Barbizon group as it was called in France. Although he was primarily a self-taught artist, he did study briefly with landscapist James Hart. During his early years as a painter, he faced many hurdles, including his lack of professional training and his physical ailments such as melancholy, chronic eczema, and failing vision that rendered him nearly blind towards the end of his life.
