Lot of two vintage Southwestern Native American Pueblo blackware pottery chargers comprising a larger example bearing the "Maria + Santana" signature of Maria Martinez (1887-1980) and Santana Martinez (1909-2002), together with a smaller work inscribed "Blue Corn" for Crucita Calabaza (1921-1999). Both display matte-on-polished surfaces with radiating feather and sunburst ornamentation characteristic of the celebrated San Ildefonso Pueblo ceramic tradition. Approximate measurements: larger charger 1.25 x 12.5 inches diameter; companion piece 1.5 x 8.75 inches diameter. Condition: Good overall vintage with typical age related surface wear consistent with age and handling. Maria (1887-1980) and Julian Martinez (1879-1943), were renowned artists from San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico, who revolutionized and perfected Native American pottery in the early 20th Century by reviving the iconic lost black-on-black ware. Their technique combined Maria’s polished, hand-coiled matte black designs with Julian’s painted, often mythical, motifs. This collaborative style, often signed “Marie & Julian,” brought global fame to the artists and economic revival to their community, carried on by the relatives, descendants, and new generations of Native American artists ever since.
