Antonio Pietro Martino (American 1902-1988) Winter Landscape with bridge oil on board signed lower right 9 x 12" 12 x 16" as framed. Martino was born in Philadelphia the son of Italian immigrants and one of seven brothers, who would all become painters. He showed an early interest in art, and when he was 13, he began taking classes with his brother Giovanni at the Graphic Sketch Club in his South Philadelphia neighborhood. Within two years, he was taking evening classes at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art (now The University of the Arts) and studying weekends at both the Spring Garden Institute and the La France Institute. Martino soon began showing his work and by the age of 23, he had exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. While living in the city, Martino and his brother spent weekend mornings painting in Bucks County. His early landscapes of New Hope and along the Delaware River show a strong impressionist influence. Martino is best known for his richly colored, darkly atmospheric landscapes of Manayunk, which he started painting in the 1930s and would remain his favorite subject for nearly 40 years. In 1971, Martino moved to California where he painted seascapes and landscapes up until his death in 1988. Martino's work has been exhibited at major institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. In his lifetime, Martino was honored with over 80 awards and his works are represented in more than 25 permanent collections.

In 1925 Antonio Martino's painting instructor wrote a note of congratulations to his talented student who, at the age of twenty-three, had two paintings accepted in the Pennsylvania Academy for the Fine Arts Annual Exhibition. The teacher was pleased that his student's work was being shown with the nation's outstanding painters. Besides, Martino's landscapes bore sold signs. . . he was urged to continue painting, which he did for the next fifty years. Antonio Martino's work is a prominent example of the long tradition of realistic painting and instruction in Philadelphia. The instructor who wrote the congratulatory letter was Albert Jean Adolphe, a student of Jean Leon Gerome in Paris, as was Thomas Eakins. In addition to this strong background, Martino also absorbed the light, colour and atmosphere of Impressionism and the solid form of Cubism. Early in his career he decided to concentrate on landscapes, and painted along the Darby Creek and on the Delaware River

Property from the Estate of Angela Gross Folk, New Jersey. The relined canvas in overall good condition, with remnants of old upper stretcher bar marks running along the top tier of the canvas. Examination under UV light reveals localized, and relatively minor, inpainting along the aforementioned stretcher bar marks. With more sporadic inpainting at upper left corner, in between the trees. The rest of the composition otherwise appears untouched. Minor surface soiling, mixed in with old varnish and craquelure at bottom right quadrant in the snow.
