Lajos Marton 1891-1952 Hotchkiss. Circa 1930. Condition A-: creases and abrasions along horizontal folds. Marton was a Hungarian artist who spent some time in Paris in the late-1920s and early-1930s working for DAM, the advertising agency owned by the Damour brothers. The brothers also owned the magazine Vendre, which they used as a vehicle to tirelessly promote modern graphic design and advertising. All of Marton's posters, in pure, French Art Deco style, were for bicycle, car or motorcycle companies.

Condition B+: creases and rippling in margins and image; minor abrasions and small stains in image; water-staining along mat at bottom edge; horizontal folds. Matted and framed. Marton was a Hungarian artist who spent some time in Paris in the late-1920s and early-1930s working for DAM, the advertising agency owned by the Damour brothers. The brothers also owned the magazine Vendre, which they used as a vehicle to tirelessly promote modern graphic design and advertising. All of Marton's posters, in pure, French Art Deco style, were for bicycle, car or motorcycle companies. In 1928, he designed his first poster for Peugeot motorcycles, which was rendered in a manner similar to Charles Loupot's dynamic style. For this poster, two years later, he employed photography, using a head-on collage of the motorcycle set dramatically along the diagonal of the image. His use of photomontage is very sophisticated, as is his placement of the lion's head (the emblem of the company) within a stylized circle.

LAJOS MARTON (1891-1952) Le Touquet. Marton, a Hungarian designer, spent most of his career in Budapest. But he worked for a few years in Paris, including a brief stint at the Cassandre-Loupot atelier Alliance Graphique, during which time he produced this Touquet poster. And the influence of the Alliance shows the view of the green is simple stylized form with a patient diminutive caddy awaiting a putt-to-come at the resort on the Channel coast below Boulogne. 'The Le Touquet golf course was opened in 1904. It enjoys a worldwide reputation for its seaside course. Many famous international competitions took place at Le Touquet, the French open tournament among them. In 1976 a player, Vincent Thabalala, a bare foot Bantu created quite a stir when he won the tournament beating all the famous players present. LAJOS MARTON (1891-1952) CYCLES AUTOMOTO. 1930. 47x31 inches. Dam Publicite, Paris. Condition B+: repaired tears and creases in margins and image. A Hungarian artist, Marton spent some time in Paris designing posters in a French Art Deco style, all for bicycle, car, or motorcycle companies. In the late 1920s and early 1930s he was employed by DAM, the advertising agency owned by the Damour Brothers, who also owned the magazine Vendre, which they used to tirelessly promote modern graphic design and advertising. For nearly 50 years Vendre was the major professional magazine for publicity in France, and remains today as a precious reference on advertising during the period. Marton's work with the airbrush and photomontage was exceptionally well handled. His images paid homage to the machines themselves and to their mechanics and components.
