After initially studying philosophy, and following a trip to Italy, André Edouard Marty began studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, in the studio of Fernand Cormon. It was at the Ecole des Beaux Arts that he met the artists Georges Lepape, Charles Martin and Pierre Brissaud, all of whom were also to work as fashion illustrators. He also came under the particular influence of the illustrator Maurice Boutet de Monvel, reflected in the refined and elegantly stylized figures found in his own work as an illustrator. After the First World War Marty continued to provide illustrations for the Gazette du Bon Ton, as well as for Vogue, Femina, L'Illustration des Modes, Monsieur, Harper's Bazar, Le Sourire and House and Garden, among others. He also illustrated around fifty books, most notably Henri de Regnier's Scènes Mythologiques, published in 1924, and produced designs for posters for London Transport. Working with the Compagnie des Arts Français, established by the architect Louis Süe and the decorator André Mare, Marty contributed to the decoration of the Pavillon Fontaine at the seminal Exposition des Arts Décoratifs of 1925, for which he also served on the jury.

London Underground Poster Andre Edouard Marty Aldershot Tattoo

Original vintage London Transport poster advertising Aldershot Tattoo that took place on June 10 and JUNE 13 to 17 1933 - Design by Andre Edouard Marty (1882-1974) features a mother and child looking at the Royal Guards holding guns and marching in line for the ceremony. London transport 'General' logo appears in the middle in the poster. The Aldershot Military Tattoo was an annual performance dating back to 1894, organised to raise money for military charities. Very good condition, minor creasing, small tears. Country of issue: UK, designer: Andre Edouard Marty, size (cm): 26x32, year of printing: 1933.

Together, two illustrations for the article "Le Dîner de la Gazette du Bon Ton" by Henry Bidou published in La Gazette du Bon Ton, July 1914. Ink, watercolor, and gouache on paper. The first is195x488 mm; 7 3/4x19 1/4 inches, on 8 1/2x21-inch sheet. The second is 137x600 mm; 5 1/2x23 3/4 inches, on 6 1/4x25 3/4-inch sheet. Each signed "A.E. Marty" and dated "Juin 1914" in lower image, the first at left and the second at right. Both adhered to board on left edge; matted and framed together. Exhibited: "Les Années 25: Art Déco/Bauhaus/Stijl/Esprit Nouveau," Musée des Arts Décoratifs, March to May 1966; "Poiret le magnifique," Musée Jacquemart-André, 1974, cat. no 255. Labels for both exhibitions on verso of backing board. Marty's illustrations accompany an article in the Gazette du Bon Ton documenting a party in celebration of the publication held by "one of the most famous couturiers in Paris" in the garden of his home at an "old Hôtel" in Paris. Couturiers, artists, and writers who contributed to the Gazette du Bon Ton attended the soiree, which included dinner in the elegant garden strung with garlands of lights, a dance performance, and an elaborate fireworks display. The location, host, and the prominent attendees remain unnamed in the original article. However, the exhibition catalogue for "Poiret le magnifique" states that Poiret hosted the affair at his Hôtel d'Antin, where he held numerous elaborate parties.

Between 1923 and 1939 the Underground issued an annual panel poster to advertise the Tournament at Earl's Court, which has remained its home ever since" (Pleasure Trips, p. 51). After studying at the École des Beaux Arts, A.E. Marty made his career as an artist in fashion - creating designs for magazines like Vogue, as well as theatre - working for the Ballet Russes and other companies designing sets, costumes, and posters. Marty designed fourteen of these small panel posters in 1933 for the London Underground, each picturing what seems to be the same fashionable mother and daughter visiting attractions and events in and out of London. For the 1933 Olympia Motor Cycle & Cycle Show, A.É. Marty extends the irony further. Marty had a perceptive eye and deft hand in portraying female relationships, and the story told here is quite interesting. A thin, beautiful, shapely and chic young lady is on the back of her beau's motorcycle. She looks back upon an adolescent girl gawky, gangly, not particularly pretty as she's furiously pedaling her bike, trying to catch up. The stories told by this small piece of paper stories of speed, desire, femininity, power and the ironies of age are far too numerous for the space available here. (Bicycle, Automobile, Travel, Rail)

Artist: ANDRE ÉDUARD MARTY (1882-1974) Size: 12 1/2 x 10 1/8 in./31.8 x 25.7 cm It's impossible not to love the ingenuity here. Any other artist would have focused on the football clubs in the 1933 FA Cup Final Everton vs. Manchester City but neither club's stripes are featured here. Instead, a generic England footballer is awkwardly holding a little girl who is looking up at him with rapt admiration, as her well-heeled mother looks on with concern. This is all the more striking considering football was very much a lad's game; in 1921, the FA banned all women from playing on League grounds, writing that "the game of football is quite unsuitable for females and should not be encouraged." There's very little historical writing on female football spectatorship during this period, and that makes this image, and the conflicts illustrated conflicts of gender, class, and generational difference even more interesting than the contest on the pitch, which Everton won 3-0. Our (by now familiar) mother-&-daughter protagonists watch in awe as Royal Air Force biplanes approach in great waves, covering the sky. Mother is in a gossamer Art Deco dress, as fine as the silk of an airman's parachute; daughter waves at the pilots. The phalanx of biplanes probably includes the 1933 Gloster Gauntlet, the last open-cockpit biplane the R.A.F. would ever fly. Four months after this air show, Winston Churchill would declare that Germany is rapidly re-arming itself. The beauty and majesty of flight, the fragility of human life, the memory of the previous war and the foreshadowing of the next are all held poignantly in this one small but superb work of art. Artist: ANDRE EDOUARD MARTY (1882-1974) Size: 12 5/8 x 10 1/4 in./32 x 26 cm On the surface, it's a quintessentially quiet, genteel, quite English rendering of Wimbledon tennis; look further and it exemplifies the drama and the genius that occurs at Centre Court. Marty's sharp angles, off-center framing, and excellent visual communication between competitors and spectators in this small design, echoes the angles of attack that change a forecourt winner into an unforced error. Marty, who was mainly a fashion illustrator in the Art Deco style, by the 1930s had become a set designer for theater and film and his talent in those arenas has clearly been reflected in these small panels for the London Underground, intended for display in the Tube carriages themselves. He created 14 of them between 1931 and 1934. (Sports)
