Member of the third generation of an illustrious saga of goldsmiths and silversmiths still active today, Lluís Masriera was the son of José Masriera Manovens (1841-1912), goldsmith and landscape painter. Although he took an early interest in painting, his training was initially oriented towards the family trade, and he was sent to study in Geneva at the age of seventeen. But his prolific and exquisite production of jewelry is only one of the aspects of the activity of this multifaceted and restless character. He was also a prestigious painter and playwright, as well as director of the Academy of Sciences of Barcelona and an omnipresent figure in the most important cultural initiatives of his time. His career as an easel painter began around 1896, when he began to promote his work in official competitions in Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Buenos Aires and San Francisco, among other cities, winning several awards. He participated in the Fine Arts Exhibitions in Barcelona since 1896, as well as in the French Artists' Salon. Individually, he showed his work in Spain, France, England and Japan. His style denotes the family influence of the Masriera family, combined with the decorative effects of the art of enamel, being inscribed in the most precious variant of pictorial modernism. With a palette reduced to pastels and cream tones, the scene envelops us with soft fragrances of silk and cotton. Modernist pendant-brooch signed by MASRIERA Y CARRERAS in 18 kt yellow gold. with “plique-à-jour” and “basse taille” fired enamels, diamonds, old cut, with a total estimated weight of 0.25 ct., ruby and a cultured pearl pendant. It represents in famous design "Ninfa from behind" by Lluís Masriera i Rosés (1872-1958). Drawings are preserved, and even the plaster model (National Library), which the Catalan would use so much in his creations. In 1915 there was a merger between two of the oldest families of jewelers and silversmiths in Barcelona. The Masriera (1839) and Carreras (1766) founded the Masriera Hermanos and Joaquín Carreras Society, quickly acquiring high recognition throughout Europe thanks to their modernist creations and their presence at events such as the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris. 1925 or the Barcelona Universal Exhibition of 1929.

LLUIS MASRIERA ROSÉS (Barcelona, 1872 - 1958). Brooch-pendant in the form of a bird with its head and plumage delicately chiselled in yellow gold, and plique-à-jour enamels, pearls and diamonds on the rest of the body. The head is set with a ruby as an eye. Enclosed is a certificate from Bagués Masriera, and a Masriera and Carreras case with very slight wear. Design by Lluis Masriera, as indicated in the album of drawings shown in the additional image. Measurements: 6 x 4.6 cm. The plique-à-jour technique, French for "letting the light in", is a vitreous enamelling technique in which the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but without any backing material on the finished product, so that the light can pass through the transparent or translucent material. It is an extremely expensive technique (up to 4 months to produce one piece), with a high failure rate. A member of the third generation of an illustrious saga of goldsmiths and silversmiths still active today, Lluís Masriera was the son of José Masriera Manovens (1841-1912), a goldsmith and landscape painter. Although he took to painting at an early age, his training was initially directed towards the family trade, and he was sent to study in Geneva at the age of seventeen. But his prolific and exquisite production of jewellery is only one aspect of the activity of this multifaceted and restless character. He was also a prestigious painter and playwright, as well as director of the Barcelona Academy of Sciences and an omnipresent figure in the most important cultural initiatives of his time. He was a pioneer in the creation of moulds and dies that allowed him to work with goldsmiths in series, becoming the true forerunner of Modernisme and Art Nouveau.

Lluís Masriera offers us in this work the representation of a character - in this case, a woman belonging to the Catalan bourgeoisie - in a very prosaic attitude, asleep in an armchair. The scene is resolved through the contrasting treatment of the light, the framing close to photography and the austere palette. A member of the third generation of an illustrious saga of goldsmiths and silversmiths still active today, Lluís Masriera was the son of José Masriera Manovens (1841-1912), a goldsmith and landscape painter. Although he took to painting at an early age, his training was initially oriented towards the family trade, and he was sent to study in Geneva at the age of seventeen. But his prolific and exquisite production of jewellery is only one aspect of the activity of this multifaceted and restless character. He was also a prestigious painter and playwright, as well as director of the Barcelona Academy of Sciences and an omnipresent figure in the most important cultural initiatives of his time. His career as an easel painter began around 1896, when he began to exhibit his work in official competitions in Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, Buenos Aires and San Francisco, among other cities, winning several prizes. He took part in the Fine Arts Exhibitions in Barcelona from 1896 onwards, as well as in the Salon des Artistes Français. He showed his work individually in Spain, France, England and Japan. His style shows the family influence of the Masriera family, combined with the decorative effects of the art of enamelling, and he belonged to the most precious variant of pictorial modernism. Works by him such as "The Japanese Parasol" (1920, MACBA), which won him the Grand Prix at the Paris Exhibition of Decorative Arts, became widely known even outside Spain, thanks to his fanciful and symbolic compositions, with a dreamlike air, which were so popular with the clientele of the first two decades of the 20th century. Some of his works, thematic strands and stylistic phases reveal a certain influence of Catalan painters such as Lluís Graner and Laureano Barrau, as well as of the French naturalist Puvis de Chavannes. As a playwright, Masriera went on to publish or premiere nearly fifty plays, and founded and directed his own theatre company, as well as the magazine "Estilo". Lluís Masriera is currently represented in the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as in various private collections.
