        A pair of resin panels, A pair of resin panels, after Justin Mathieu (1796-1864), depicting the Crucifixion and the Baptism of Christ, with convex glazed glass, in faux tortoiseshell moulded frames, each with inscribed 'Justin M', 42cm x 53cm (2) Justin Mathieu specialized in reliefs with historical and religious motifs, which were exhibited in the Parisian salons between 1846 and 1864. His brilliant, multi-figure depictions in small-format reliefs made of various materials were very popular and were sought after by the affluent middle-class. Condition Report: Backing slightly loose. Glass fine, some chips to the frames. Copies of Justin Mathieu.

        JUSTIN MATHIEU (1799 - 1864). Christ led before the Sanhedrin.. Signed lower right. Mathieu Justin was an artist specializing in bas relief historical and religious subjects and exhibited repeatedly at the Salons between 1846 and 1861, even winning some prizes. Works by him are kept at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and a bas-relief in embossed leather with the same subject is in the collection of the Museum Plantin-Moretus in Antwerp (inv. MPM.V.III.03.007).. Cm 47,00 x 62,00.

        Justin Mathieu specialized in reliefs on historical and religious subjects, many of which were shown in Parisian salons from 1846 to 1864. His virtuoso, multi-figure compositions in small-format reliefs, executed in various materials, were very popular and aimed at customers of the wealthy middle class. In the Adoration of the Magi, Mathieu draws on the style of the Nordic Renaissance of the 16th century in order to expand the events magnificently. Mary with the child image the calm center of the composition, in front of which the kings lay their gifts. A ruin forms the scene of worship, as has been customary in iconography since the 15th century. In the relief with Christ's undressing for the crucifixion on Golgotha, Mathieu takes up the grand style of the 17th and early 18th centuries, as it was established primarily by Charles Le Brun, and transfers it to the small format. Christ stands compositionally isolated heroically and suffering on the rock above the dramatized multi-figure event that takes place below him, where the soldiers lead the two condemned thieves to the place of execution. The mounted soldiers look like they are fighters in a battle.

        "Saint Louis with his Troops against the Saracens" and "Saint Louis with the Crown of Thorns in the Santa Chapelle in Paris" h. 1850 Pair of plaster reliefs with electrolytic silver bath. Signed "Justin". With back frames. Justin was a sculptor specialized in reliefs of historical or religious themes and made his name in the salons of Paris between 1846-64. They are pieces that reflect the romantic taste of the time and of the French for their history. The Victoria & Albert Museum in Londes has two copies with this same theme.
